DIE HEILIGE FAMILIE MIT DER HEILIGEN ELISABETH UND JOHANNES Öl auf Leinwand. Doubliert. 139,5 x 119,5 cm. In verziertem Rahmen. Beigegeben eine Expertise von Marco Ciampolini, Siena, 20. März 2022, in Kopie. Vor einer Säulenarchitektur auf der linken Bildhälfte nimmt die Heilige Familie ihren Platz ein. Maria wendet sich liebevoll ihrem Sohn zu, der sich in einer Drehung in ihre Arme wendet. Josef steht hinter dieser zentralen Gruppe und schaut diese zärtlich und beschützend an. Die rechte Bildhälfte, hinterfangen von einem Ausblick in eine felsige Landschaft wird von der Heiligen Elisabeth und Johannes dem Täufer eingenommen. Durch die Handhaltung des Johannes werden die beiden Figurengruppen miteinander verbunden. Der manieristische Künstler hat sich hier unter anderem von Raffael aber auch von Michelangelos Figurendarstellungen in der Sixtinischen Kapelle beeinflussen lassen, diese Vorbilder aber neu interpretiert. Vergleiche mit Werken Roncallis zeigen Figuren wie z.B. die Johannesfigur, die wiederholt in seinem Oeuvre auftauchen (Madonna mit dem Kind, Nationalen Kunstgalerie, Urbino). Auch die „Heilige Familie“ in der Städtischen Pinakothek in Jesi (Ileana Chiappini di Sorio. Cristoforo Roncalli detto il Pomarancio. Bergamo 1983, S. 113-144 und S. 200-201) dient als Vergleichsbeispiel. Geschildert wird eine Szene des neuen Testaments: die Bekehrung des Christenverfolgers Saulus zum Apostel Paulus. Während des gemeinsamen Zugs mit seiner Gefolgschaft nach Damaskus fällt Saulus durch eine himmlische Lichterscheinung von seinem Pferd. Das Blatt mit einem Halbrund als oberen Abschluss zeigt am unteren linken Bildrand einen großen Schildträger, durch den der Blick zur Bildmitte auf den vom Pferd gestürzten Saulus gelenkt wird. Im Bereich des Himmels die göttliche Erscheinung umgeben von zahlreichen Putti. Vereinzelt Überklebungen und Risssp. Anmerkung: Das Blatt war im Besitz des Florentiner und Turiner Sammlers Conte E.R. KRÖNUNG DER HEILIGEN KATHERINA VON SIENA Öl auf Leinwand. 101,5 x 59,5 cm. Beigegeben eine Expertise von Marco Ciampolini, mit zahlreichen Vergleichsbeispielen und Detailvergleichen, Siena, 26. März 2017. In gestrecktem Hochformat ist die Heilige in Nonnenkleidung kniend zu sehen, ihre Rechte demütig an die Brust gelegt, die Linke aufmerksam erhoben. Ihr nach oben gerichteter Blick gilt der erhöht auf einer Wolke in hellem Licht erscheinenden Gestalt Jesu. In dessen Händen eine Dornenkrone sowie ein goldener Kronreif. Jesus vor heller Lichterscheinung umgeben von einem Kranz schwebender Engelsköpfe. Rechts oben ein großer, bekleideter Engel, der soeben Luzifer mit Fledermausflügeln abwehrt, ein Verweis auf die Unverführbarkeit der Heiligen. Am Boden ihre Attribute, Rosenkranz, Gebetbuch und eine weiße Lilie als Symbol ihrer Reinheit. Der Maler, nach seinem Geburtsort auch „Il Pomarancio“ genannt, steht stilistisch zwischen Manierismus und Frühbarock. Sein Nachruf nennt Florenz als die Stadt, in der er seine Ausbildung erhielt. 1670/72 arbeitete er in seiner Heimatstadt. 1576 entstand sein Altarbild für den Dom von Siena, wonach er häufig Aufträge erhielt. In Rom stand er in den Jahren 1582 bis 1583 im Dienst des Papstes, um in der Galleria Gregoriana und in den Loggien des Vatikans zu malen. Als eines seiner Hauptwerke werden die Fresken der Sala del Tesoro von 1605 bis 1609 in der Basilika von Loreto gesehen. Ein vergleichbares Gemälde, vor allem in der Lichtführung, die „Kommunion des Hl. Sylvester“ von 1605 bis 1615 schuf Roncalli für die Kirche San Silvestro, heute im Museo Civico in Osimo. A.R. Many of Rocalli’s figures of saints and martyrs pivot elegantly, if extravagantly, around axial joints in their bodies. The present sheet depicting a child reaching out to hold the hand of another figure outside of the scene is likely to have served as a preparatory sketch for one of these compositions.

*Cristofano Roncalli, called Pomarancio (circa 1553-1626) design for a ceiling: a nude young man seated on a cloud, holding a staff. Bears old attribution, verso: Di Daniel da Volterra. Black chalk, squared. 337 by 249mm. Provenance: Mr. and Mrs. H.N. Squire; A. Mathews, 1957 (cat. 57); Timothy Clifford (bears his collector's mark, not in Lugt), his sale, London, Sotheby's, 3 July 1989, lot 36. Exhibited: Kendal, Abbot Hall Art Gallery, 16th and 17th Century Italian Drawings, 1981, cat.56. This study does not seem to be connected with a surviving decoration, but is entirely characteristic of Roncalli's style and figure type; it can be compared with other studies of putti for the cupola at Loreto, in the British Museum (see J.A.
