Online archive: ugorondinone.com/artwork/14299/ Ugo Rondinone’s forest drawings connect to the tradition of Romantic landscape painting, in which nature appears less as an external reality than as a resonant space of inner states. Historical pictorial formulas are taken up, but not quoted; instead, they are translated into an independent, contemporary visual language. In black ink, a dense web of trunks and branches forms, condensing into a vibrating, almost pulsating structure. Yet Rondinone’s forest resists a purely observational perspective. It appears as an imagined space in which reality and imagination overlap. Nature is not simply depicted, but transformed in such a way that the familiar becomes unfamiliar. Between deep black and emerging white, a strong tension arises that evokes both a sense of shelter and unease. The large-scale sheet intensifies this effect by drawing the viewer directly into the pictorial space, allowing little distance. The date included in the title gives the drawing an immediate, diary-like character. Zwischen tiefem Schwarz und aufbrechendem Weiss entsteht eine starke Spannung, die zugleich ein Gefühl von Schutz und Unruhe spürbar macht. Das grossformatige Blatt steigert diese Wirkung, indem es die Betrachtenden unmittelbar in den Bildraum hineinzieht und kaum Distanz zulässt. Durch das im Titel festgehaltene Datum erhält die Zeichnung zudem einen unmittelbaren, tagebuchartigen Charakter. Der Wald erscheint so nicht nur als Motiv, sondern als psychologischer Ort – ein Ort, an dem sich innere Zustände und Natur überlagern.

(Réf: 3853) | Galeria João Graça, Portugal Provenance: Private Swiss Collection The piece is part of a conceptual series that uses consumer goods to comment on a crucial historical moment: the transfer of sovereignty of Hong Kong from the United Kingdom to China, which took place on 1 July 1997. The title uses the "best before" date found on consumer goods to mark the end of 155 years of British rule. This transforms a mundane expiration date into a profound statement on the transience of political systems and colonial history. Huang Yong Ping (1954–2019) was a Chinese-born contemporary artist known for his conceptual and installation-based works that explored the relationship between Eastern and Western cultures, history, religion, and politics. Born in Xiamen, China, he studied at the Zhejiang Academy of Fine Arts and became a leading figure of the Chinese avant-garde movement of the 1980s. In 1986 he founded the influential artist collective Xiamen Dada, which challenged traditional artistic values and embraced chance, destruction, and conceptual experimentation. After participating in the landmark exhibition Magiciens de la Terre in Paris, he chose to remain in France, where he continued to develop large-scale installations incorporating cultural symbols, animals, and architectural forms. Huang Yong Ping represented France at the Venice Biennale in 1999 and his work has been widely exhibited in major museums and biennials around the world.

With his drawings of forests, Ugo Rondinone continues a long tradition of romantic landscape depictions in which nature is understood not as a mere image, but as a mirror of innermost feelings. Rondinone takes historical landscape motifs, restages them on a large scale and translates them into a contemporary visual language. Using black ink, he develops a vibrant structure of trunks and branches, which in their density and precision are reminiscent of both Johann Christian Reinhart's filigree depictions of forests and Carl Wilhelm Kolbe's fantastically exaggerated tree creatures. The forest appears, not as a realistically observed landscape, but as an imagined, intensified space. The feelings of menace and security are intertwined here, an ambivalence that Rondinone further reinforces through striking contrasts of light and dark. The large format gives the seemingly classic subject an unfamiliar presence that directly involves the viewer in the scene. The date written out in the title of the work refers to exactly when it was created and lends the drawing a diary-like quality. Mit seinen Waldzeichnungen knüpft Ugo Rondinone an eine lange Tradition romantischer Landschaftsdarstellungen an, in der die Natur nicht als blosses Abbild, sondern als Spiegel innerer Empfindungen verstanden wird. Rondinone greift historische Landschaftsmotive auf, inszeniert sie in grossem Massstab neu und übersetzt sie in eine zeitgenössische Bildsprache. Mit schwarzer Tinte entwickelt er eine vibrierende Struktur aus Stämmen und Ästen, die in ihrer Dichte und Präszision sowohl an die filigranen Walddarstellungen Johann Christian Reinharts als auch an die fantastisch übersteigerten Baumwesen Carl Wilhelm Kolbes erinnern. Der Wald tritt dabei nicht als realistisch beobachtete Landschaft auf, sondern als imaginierter, verdichteter Raum. In ihm verschränken sich Bedrohung und Geborgenheit, eine Ambivalenz, die Rondinone durch markante Hell-Dunkel-Kontraste noch verstärkt. Das Grossformat gibt dem scheinbar klassischen Sujet eine ungewohnte Präsenz, die die Betrachtenden unmittelbar in das Geschehen miteinbezieht. Das ausgeschriebene Datum im Titel der Arbeit verweist auf den Moment ihrer Entstehung und verleiht der Zeichnung eine tagebuchartige Qualität. Der Wald wird so zu einer Reflexion von Rondinones innerer Welt, in der Natur und Künstler unweigerlich miteinander verschmelzen.
