Intensa raffigurazione di filosofo antico colto di profilo in assorta meditazione. La figura emerge dal fondo con forte evidenza plastica: il profilo scavato, la lunga barba fluente e il vibrante manto giallo ocra concorrono a definire un’immagine di grande forza evocativa.L’opera manifesta stringenti consonanze con la produzione di “teste di carattere” e filosofi elaborata da Salvator Rosa negli anni della maturità romana, soprattutto per la tensione espressiva del volto, la pennellata sintetica ma incisiva e il gusto per le tipologie umane intensamente introspettive. La costruzione chiaroscurale, unita alla calibrata gamma cromatica giocata su bruni profondi e accensioni dorate, richiama inoltre quella cultura figurativa romano-napoletana che, nel corso del Seicento, sviluppò una personale interpretazione del naturalismo caravaggesco.La particolare iconografia del personaggio assume ulteriore interesse alla luce dell’expertise di Maurizio Marini, che riconduce il dipinto all’ambito di Carlo Maratta. Secondo lo studioso, l’opera sarebbe infatti da collegarsi alla stagione degli interventi di restauro promossi dal maestro marchigiano nelle Stanze Vaticane, e in particolare alla parete della “Scuola di Atene” di Raffaello Sanzio. Il soggetto deriverebbe da uno dei filosofi raffigurati nel celebre affresco raffaellesco, reinterpretato in chiave autonoma e con accentuata intensità chiaroscurale.Pur condividendo l’interesse per la tradizione classicista romana evidenziato da Marini, la qualità della stesura pittorica, la forte tensione emotiva del volto e il naturalismo drammatico della composizione sembrano avvicinare maggiormente il dipinto alla cultura figurativa di Salvator Rosa, in particolare alle sue celebri teste di filosofo eseguite durante il soggiorno romano. La resa sintetica ma vibrante della materia, unita alla costruzione luministica intensa e meditativa, suggerisce infatti un’attribuzione più convincente all’ambito del maestro napoletano. Salvator Rosa (1615 15 March 1673) is best known today as an Italian Baroque painter, whose romanticised landscapes and history paintings, often set in dark and untamed nature, exerted considerable influence from the 17th century into the early 19th century. In his lifetime, he was among the most famous painters, known for his flamboyant personality, and regarded as an accomplished poet, satirist, actor, musician and printmaker. He was active in Naples, Rome, and Florence, where on occasion he was compelled to move between cities, as his caustic satire earned him enemies in the artistic and intellectual circles of the day.

Schizzo a penna raffigurante due figure maschili, verosimilmente frati, inserite in un paesaggio appena accennato. Il tratto è rapido, nervoso e sintetico, costruito attraverso segni abbreviati che definiscono le masse senza soffermarsi sui dettagli anatomici. Il paesaggio è reso con linee fluide e frammentarie, contribuendo a un effetto complessivo di spontaneità e libertà grafica, tipico dei fogli di studio.Anticamente il foglio risultava attribuito ad Annibale Carracci, come documentato da un’iscrizione al verso di carattere collezionistico, mentre per caratteristiche stilistiche e per il tratto sciolto e vibrante, di andamento nervoso, appare più vicino alla sensibilità grafica di Salvator Rosa.Reca al verso una antica iscrizione “Ann. Carracci”; ulteriori tracce di numerazioni e residui di etichette cartacee agli angoli.

(etwas lädiert und beschabt, Läsuren am Rücken) mit goldgeprägtem Rückenschild "Salvator Rosa". Folio. B. 1-86 (ohne 22), Bozzolato 4-11, 13-66, 69-74, 80-96, Wallace 6, 9-14,16, 21, 24-27, 29-30, 32-33, 35-37, 39-41,44, 46-55, 57-60, 62-64, 65b-71, 73-84, 86-87, 91, 93-97, 99-104, 108-118, jeweils einziger oder letzter Zustand. Wz. Fleur-de-lis im Doppelkreis mit angehängten Buchstaben. Salvator Rosa behielt zeitlebens verlegerische Kontrolle über sein radiertes Werk. Dieses bestand abgesehen von frühen bzw. experimentellen Drucken außerhalb der Auflage aus 85 Blättern, die der Künstler und seine Nachfahren bevorzugt in Form von Alben in Umlauf brachten. Die 85 Kupferplatten verblieben in Familienbesitz und wurden erst im 18. Jahrhundert als geschlossene Gruppe an die Calcografia in Rom verkauft. Antony Griffiths geht davon aus, dass die überwiegende Mehrheit der heute zirkulierenden Einzelblätter aus Alben wie dem vorliegenden stammen (vgl. A. Griffiths: "On some Albums of Etchings by Salvator Rosa", in: Print Quarterly, IX (1992), Nr. 3, S. 251-259). Deren Zusammenstellung umfasste wie hier: die 62-teilige Folge der "Figurine" (B. 25-86), die 6 Motive mit Tritonen und Flussgöttern (B. 11-16) sowie die 17 großen Historiendarstellungen, darunter der gesuchte "Sturz der Giganten" (B. 21). Überwiegend ausgezeichnete, teils tonige und nur vereinzelt minimal auslassende Drucke auf den vollen Albumseiten. Vor allem die ersten Seiten leicht stockfleckig sowie unten fingerfleckig, weitere geringe Flecken sowie Alters- und Gebrauchsspuren, sonst in sehr guter und originaler Erhaltung. Four early etchings from the Figurine series by Old Master artist Salvator Rosa (Italian, 1615-1673), depicting single and multi-figure studies, including peasants and soldiers. Each impression shows a clear plate mark and is printed on laid paper with visible foolscap watermarks. Plates include numbers consistent with the series. As with many of Rosa's early etchings, these were not monogrammed in the plate. Late 17th century impressions, possibly lifetime or early posthumous, based on the foolscap watermark and strong plate impressions. Impressions measure approximately 4 1/16" x 7 1/8". Oil on canvas. Dimensions: 79.5 x 70 cm. Datable to around 1638-1639, the composition depicts a river landscape enlivened by two women, a child, and several men laboriously carrying a large tree trunk along a riverbank, while in the background a small town is glimpsed, shrouded in twilight. The scene, rendered with a twilight light of strong poetic intensity, concentrates the main luminous accents on the figures and their reflections on the water, leaving the rest of the landscape in a somber and evocative atmosphere. Although it appears to be a genre scene with peasants, the iconography could allude to the legend of the True Cross, an interpretation reinforced by the prominence of the trunk in the foreground and the narrative character of the composition. This work belongs to Salvator Rosa's early period and reveals both the influence of Neapolitan naturalism and the assimilation of landscape models from the Emilian tradition, with echoes of Francesco Fracanzano, Aniello Falcone, and Domenico Gargiulo, and connections to styles derived from Annibale Carracci, Domenichino, and Domenico Viola. FELSIGES KÜSTENSTÜCK MIT FISCHERN UND GEHARNISCHTEN Öl auf Leinwand. Altdoubliert. 69 x 124 cm. Unten mittig auf dem Felsen monogrammiert „SR“. In ornamental reliefiertem Rahmen. Beigegeben ein Gutachten von Nicola Spinosa, Neapel, 8. Juni 2024, in Kopie. Weite imposante Gewässerlandschaft mit teils schroff ansteigenden, felsigen Ufern. Im Vordergrund links ein luftiger, jedoch dominanter Repoussoirbaum, darunter mehrere Soldaten, dahinter dem Gewässer zugewandte Fischer. Im Zentrum des Gemäldes macht das Ufer einen Bogen und bietet einer Stadt, deren Silhouette sich sanft von dem Wasserspiegel abzeichnet, einen optimalen Standort. Salvator Rosa war ein italienischer Zeichner, Maler und Dichter. Zu seinen Darstellungen gehörten neben Landschaften auch philosophische Allegorien und Historien. Er studierte klassische Literatur, Poesie und Musik und gelangte 1631/32 in das Haus des Malers Jusepe de Ribera. The work depicts a rocky landscape enlivened by two figures, a characteristic typology of the paintings of Salvator Rosa, one of the most original landscape painters of the Italian Baroque. His compositions are distinguished by their representation of rugged, mountainous, and wild landscapes, far removed from the idealized classical landscape, where nature appears powerful, dramatic, and often mysterious. In these scenes, human figures usually appear on a small scale within the landscape, emphasizing the grandeur and untamed character of the natural environment. Abrupt rocks, twisted trees, and stormy skies create an atmosphere charged with poetic tension, a trait that made Rosa one of the most admired painters among European collectors of the 17th century. Salvator Rosa developed his career between Naples, Florence, and Rome, distinguishing himself not only as a painter but also as a poet and engraver. His style profoundly influenced the evolution of Romantic landscape painting, and he is considered one of the forerunners of the sensitivity toward the sublime nature that would characterize later centuries.
