Salvator Rosa "Apollo & the Cumaean Sybil" - Ex-Fogg

                Est: $700 - $1,050

Salvator Rosa (Italian / Neapolitan, 1615-1673). "Apollo and the Cumaean Sibyl" etching and dry point on laid paper, 1661. Signed "ROSA" on base of lyre in lower right. An impressive etching on paper titled "Apollo and the Cumaean Sibyl" by Italian Baroque artist Salvator Rosa depicting the moment in Ovid's "Metamorphoses" when Apollo, the son of Zeus and Leto, became enamored of the Cumaean Sibyl, one of the ten cave-dwelling oracles of the ancient world. Apollo agreed to give her anything she wished, so she asked him for as many years of life as the grains of sand she held in her hand. Long life was granted to her, but unfortunately without the gift of eternal youth. The Cumaean Sibyl was assumed to be 700 years old when she guided Aeneas on his journey in the underworld. The celebrated musician Apollo is shown accompanied by his lyre as he leans toward the youthful beauty who greets him with open arms. Size of impression: 8.5" W x 13.25" H (21.6 cm x 33.7 cm); of sheet: 9.25" W x 13.75" H (23.5 cm x 34.9 cm); of matte: 16" W x 21.5" H (40.6 cm x 54.6 cm) "Despite living three hundred years before the Romantic movement, Rosa--a poet, satirist, composer, etcher, and painter--epitomized the Romantic rebel. He refused to paint on commission or to agree on a price beforehand, and he chose his own subjects. He painted in order 'to be carried away by the transports of enthusiasm and use my brushes only when I feel myself rapt.' "Rosa studied in Naples, where Jusepe Ribera's realism influenced him. Encouraged by Giovanni Lanfranco, Rosa went to Rome in 1635. A bout with malaria drove him back to Naples, but he returned in 1639, resolving 'to have his name on everybody's lips.' His amateur theatrical group lampooned the sculptor Gian Lorenzo Bernini, prompting Rosa's quick departure. In Florence he enjoyed Medici patronage and founded the Accademia dei Percossi (Academy of the Afflicted), a crossroads for literati and artists. Rosa considered his innovative, rugged landscapes as mere recreation; in his mind only religious or historical subjects constituted 'High Art.' In 1649 he settled in Rome to work toward success as a history painter." Est: €4,000 - €5,000

Italian school, circle of SALVATOR ROSA (Naples, 1615 - Rome, 1673). "Landscapes with horses". Oil on canvas (x2). It presents slight restorations on the pictorial surface. Measurements: 22,5 x 30 cm (x2); 27,5 x 35 cm (frames, x2). Pair of canvases in which a similar scene is represented dominated by the presence of a rearing horse and a tamer who tries to take the reins of the animal. In both cases movement predominates in the scene thanks to the horse's posture and waving mane, and in one of the scenes there is also the presence of a small dog also in a dynamic attitude. Aesthetically they are close to the painting of Salvator Rosa, a multifaceted Italian artist of the 17th century, active in Naples, Rome and Florence, in various fields (painter, engraver, actor, musician, poet). As a painter he has come to be described as "unorthodox and extravagant" and an "eternal rebel", pro-Romantic. His most expressive and fanciful production gained esteem in the 18th and 19th centuries, influencing masters such as Giambattista Tiepolo and Fragonard. He was born in Arenella, on the outskirts of Naples. He was the son of Vito Antonio de Rosa, who enrolled him in the convent of the Somascan fathers in order to direct him towards a career as an ecclesiastic or lawyer. Salvator preferred the arts and secretly worked with his maternal uncle Paolo Greco, learning to paint, and soon moved on to apprenticeship with his brother-in-law Francesco Fracanzano, a pupil of Ribera. He frequented Ribera's workshop and the school of Aniello Falcone, who introduced him to painting battles and landscapes. At the age of seventeen he lost his father; his mother was left with several children to care for, and Salvator found himself without financial support. He continued his apprenticeship with Aniello Falcone, helping him to complete his battle paintings. In that workshop his work is said to have come to the attention of Giovanni Lanfranco, who advised him to move to Rome, where he remained between 1634 and 1636. It seems that Rosa became ill with malaria and returned to Naples. In Naples, Salvator Rosa began to paint hunting landscapes, with lush vegetation, or beaches, mountains and caves. Rosa was one of the first to paint "romantic" landscapes, with a talent for picturesque, often turbulent scenes with shepherds, sailors, soldiers. These early landscapes were not painted on commission, but were sold cheaply on the open market, through dealers. He returned to Rome in 1638-39, where he stayed with Cardinal Francesco Maria Brancaccio, Bishop of Viterbo. For the Chiesa Santa Maria della Morte in Viterbo, Rosa painted an altarpiece, the first of the few he executed, with an Incredulity of Saint Thomas. While it is true that Rosa had an easy talent for painting, he cultivated a wide variety of arts: music, poetry, writing, etching, and acting. In Rome, he befriended the engraver Pietro Testa and Claudio Lorena. In Rome, he was very famous as an actor, creating farces and carnival shows.
