Other Notes:
Born on the eve of the Civil War in Louisiana, 1859, Rosseau lost much of his family during the war years, including his parents and two brothers. Rosseau's life went from the initially privileged plantation environment of a well-off family to being raised through the good will of family friends in Kentucky.

As a young man, he was compelled to find his own way in the world and explored various pursuits to earn money for himself and his remaining sister, specifically to fund a dowry for her. He spent time as a cowboy on the Chisolm Trail from Mexico to Kansas, as a cattle-driver, and eventually as a commodities broker. After a failed attempt at a lumber business, he eventually achieved success with an import business, which resulted in enough income for him to finally devote himself to painting. At the age of 35, he left the business to his partner and travelled to Paris to study at the Académie Julian.

In these early years in Paris, Rosseau also trained in the ateliers of Jules Lefevre, Tony Robert-Fleury and Charles Herman-Leon. He first began to show his work in the Paris Salon in 1900 and found that his most consistent praise was for his depictions of dogs. This suited him immensely as he found himself generally impatient with sitters for his figurative works. This realization first came in 1903 when his image of the goddess Diana with two Irish wolfhounds was widely acclaimed, particularly for the wolfhounds. In 1904, he submitted a work with just two dogs in it and it sold within a day. This was the turning point, and his subsequent focus became sporting dogs on the hunt. English and American pointers are most often seen in his paintings.

Rosseau's work became widely popular in the U.S. where there was a well-defined market ready and waiting for him – wealthy gentlemen sportsmen in the years following America's Gilded Age. Nevertheless, he remained in France until 1915, making frequent trips back to the United States to fulfill commissions and participate in exhibitions. At the onset of World War I, he finally moved back to the States where he settled in Lyme, Connecticut. During this time, one of his most prominent patrons was Percy Rockefeller. In the early 1920s the Rockefeller family was building a residence at Overhills, an exclusive hunting club in North Carolina. In 1927, receipts for contractor payments at Overhills detail payments made to construct a cottage for Rosseau on the property. Rockefeller encouraged Rosseau to use his dogs as models.

In the present composition, the two pointers and setter at rest look up as if awaiting orders from their owner. Rosseau beautifully captures the individual characteristics of each dog and gives the viewer a sense of their individual natures.

Rosseau was a member of the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts in Philadelphia, the Lotos Club in New York City, and the Lyme Art Association. He exhibited at the Paris Salon, the Lyme Art Association, and prominent galleries in New York City and elsewhere. His works are included in numerous notable private and public collections including The Orlando Museum of Art, The Columbus Museum of Art, and the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts. Rosseau died in Fayetteville, North Carolina on November 29, 1937.

Percival Leonard Rosseau (American/Louisiana)

Lot 284: Percival Leonard Rosseau (American/Louisiana)

Auction Date: Sep 09, 2017

Estimate: $4,000 - $6,000

Description: Percival Leonard Rosseau (American/Louisiana, 1859-1937), "Irish Setter", 1932, charcoal on paper, signed and dated lower right, 27 1/4 in. x 39 1/4 in., matted and framed. Note: Percival Leonard Rosseau was born in 1859 in Pointe Coupée Parish, Louisiana. After his parents and two older brothers were killed and Sherman destroyed the family plantation during the Civil War, he and his sister were rescued by a slave and raised by a family friend in Kentucky. After exploring a career as an importer in New Orleans and a cowboy along the Chisholm Trail, Rosseau surprised his associates and friends by leaving for Paris to enroll in the Académie Julian at the age of thirty-five. In the Paris Salon of 1903, his painting featuring Diana with two Irish Wolfhounds received much positive attention, particularly for the two dogs in the composition. The following year he would exhibit two paintings of setters which proved hugely popular. This trend set Rosseau?s trajectory as a highly respected and sought-after painter of dogs, and he was a favorite among prominent sportsmen such as Percy Rockefeller and Clarence Mackay. In the lot offered here, Rosseau?s attention to detail and mastery of the canine form is on full display. Even with the restriction of the black and white palette, he is able to perfectly convey the posture, fur, and sinewy articulations of the dog in mid-hunt. Ref.: ?Percival Leonard Rosseau.? Lot 2188: OIL PAINTING BY PERCIVAL LEONARD ROSSEAU (American, 1859-1937) "POINTERS JIMMIE DE K & PETERS CARROT ON QUAIL."

Auction Date: Oct 08, 2014

Estimate: $20,000 - $40,000

Description: Outstanding framed oil on canvas painting depicts two dogs on point in a slight hillside landscape. The lead dog centered in the painting having large brown patches against a white coat. He stands still in pointing position looking left to right while another dog follows his lead. The foreground grass field leads to a background of a slight hillside with trees and colorful bushes. Signed lower left "Rosseau 1923." Housed in a period gilt decorated frame. On reverse is an Arthur Ackermann & Son, Inc label which is attached to both the stretcher and frame. The label has type written artist and title. Also on reverse is an inset light board supporting the canvas which also has the artist and title. Percival Rosseau was born in 1859 in Pointe Coupee Parish, Louisiana. His training was at the Academie Julian in Paris, France starting in 1894 where he worked under Jules Lefebvre, Charles Herrmann-Leon and Tony Robert-Fleury. It was in the Paris salon that he initiated his start in painting sporting dogs and won much acclaim. Although he remained in France until 1915, he made several trips back to the United States to exhibit and fulfill commissions. With the onset of the first World War, he returned to the United States permanently and settled in Old Lyme Connecticut where he became part of the Old Lyme artists' colony. It was at this time that he spent time at the estates of his wealthy patrons who invited him to shoot and paint on their properties; among these was Percy Rockefeller who lent Rosseau his dogs for use as models and even went to the extent of building a studio for him to use during the cold weather months at Overhills, his private hunting club in Fayetteville NC. Over the years Rosseau's paintings would be made into fabulous sporting prints and collected by the general public. Arthur Ackermann & Sons was a very prestigious firm based in London and New York and considered to be one of the oldest art dealers in London. They were best known for the publication and selling of sporting prints as well as dealing in the original paintings. This painting was copyrighted by the firm in 1925. SIZE: 20" x 32" Overall including frame 23-1/2" x 36" PROVENANCE: Purchased from W.E. Browne & Co. (a copy of the invoice included dated 8-7-72) of Atlanta Georgia by Mr. Jack Adair who was with his wife personal friends of Robert Woodruff (Coca-Cola founder). Both men were members of the Augusta National Golf Club. The Adairs were guests at Mr. Woodruff's plantation "Ichauway" in South Georgia where they enjoyed quail hunting. It is thought that through this connection and their love of sport shooting, that inspired the Adairs to buy this painting. After Jack's death in 1974 the painting was inherited by Marisa Adair, who married Mr. Calvin R Allen, who inherited the painting when Marisa died in 1998, and they are coming to the market as part of his estate. Three Setters

Lot 427: Three Setters

Auction Date: Jul 26, 2014

Estimate: $24,000 - $28,000

Description: bronze, 15 1/2 in. long by 9 1/2 in. wide by 8 1/2 in. high inscribed "ROMAN BRONZE WORKS N-Y-" on side of base
Percival Rosseau was born in 1859 near Baton Rouge, Louisiana. Although he is considered a premier artist of sporting dogs, Rosseau did not turn to art until relatively late in his life. He made his fortune through business by the age of thirty-five, and then he sailed to Paris to attend the Académie Julian. He studied under Jules Lefebvre (1836-1911), and returned to the United States after a successful 1904 Paris Salon to find a ready market for his work among wealthy sportsmen and breeders of pointers and setters.
Among these patrons was Percy Rockefeller, nephew of oil tycoon John. D. Rockefeller, son of William Avery Rockefeller, Jr., and brother of Geraldine Rockefeller Dodge. Along with several investors, Percy Rockefeller built Overhills, a private hunt and country club with stables and kennels in Cumberland County, North Carolina. He kept a cottage on the property for Rosseau to use when he visited and the artist is known to have painted several setters from the Rockefeller kennel.
Rosseau's best works capture the tense action of hunting dogs. This rare sculpture by the artist, depicting three alert setters, tightly packed and intent on tracking the scent, is thought to be the only bronze made during his career. It bears the inscription of the Roman Bronze Works, which was founded in 1897 and introduced the lost-wax casting method to America. Roman Bronze Works was the pre-eminent bronze foundry in the country, working with other artists, including Frederic Remington (1861-1909) and Charles M. Russell (1864-1926). The foundry suffered a tremendous loss in 1921 when a spectacular fire gutted the plant in Brooklyn, but the company continues to produce bronzes today.
An edition of Rosseau's bronze sold in 1975 from Giralda, the New Jersey estate of Geraldine Rockefeller Dodge. Geraldine, sister of Percy, was herself an avid sportswoman and dog-lover who endowed St. Hubert's Giralda and co-founded the Morris and Essex Kennel Club with her husband. She was also known for her art collection, which included animalier bronzes and numbered into the thousands when she died in 1973. This is a rare opportunity to collect a scarce work by sporting art royalty.

Percival Leonard Rosseau American, 1859-1937 Connecticut, Rocks and Pools (Dogs in a Stream), 1926

Lot 65: Percival Leonard Rosseau American, 1859-1937 Connecticut, Rocks and Pools (Dogs in a Stream), 1926

Auction Date: Apr 02, 2014

Estimate: $30,000 - $50,000

Description: Percival Leonard Rosseau
American, 1859-1937
Connecticut, Rocks and Pools (Dogs in a Stream), 1926
Signed Rosseau and dated 1926 (ll); inscribed 28 x 34 Price $1,200/"Connecticut" Rocks and Pools/Paul, Captain France/Henna and Sammie on the board backing
Oil on canvas
28 3/8 x 34 1/8 inches

The peripatetic life of Percival Rosseau traverses two wars, and reads like an adventure novel. Born in Louisiana, he lost nearly his entire family during the Civil War and his family plantation was destroyed by William Tecumseh Sherman during his campaign through Mississippi. According to family lore, Rosseau and his sister were saved by a slave, and were raised in Kentucky by a family friend. After pursuing various careers, as a cowboy, a lumberman, and finally achieving success as an importer, Rosseau left for France at the age of thirty-five, enrolling at the Academie Julian.
His submissions of work to the 1903 and 1904 Paris salons met with critical acclaim; the paintings featured wolfhounds and setters. Rosseau and his wife remained in France until 1915, raising hunting dogs in his home in Rolleboise, where Daniel Ridgway Knight also painted. Traveling regularly back to the United States, Rosseau and his wife left France permanently in 1915, settling in Old Lyme, Connecticut, another vibrant artists' community.
Rosseau devoted himself entirely to painting pointers and English setters, training his dogs to pose for hours at a time. In America, as seen in the present work, painted at the height of his powers, his palette brightened, and his style loosened. In the present work, he places his dogs in a richly textured, painterly landscape bathed in light. His thirsty hounds - possibly identified here by name on the backing - lap up water, its surface is transformed into a pleasing network of rhythmic trapezoidal forms.
Rosseau enjoyed tremendous success, his ability to individuate the dogs in his paintings a consequence of his many years as a hunter and breeder. He reminisced, "A man should paint what he knows best, and I knew more about animals than anything else. I have ran [sic] hounds from childhood and have at my fingertips the thorough knowledge of dogs necessary to picture them faithfully."
