Le antichità romane. Rome: presso l'autore, 1823. First edition of Rossini's collection of plates, featuring evocative and majestic views of Rome's principal monuments. The artist focuses on ancient architecture and the city's excavations, also showcasing bucolic scenes and popular views. Rossini's archaeological precision clearly reflects the influence of Piranesi, from whom he inherited a meticulous rendering of places, materials, and ancient inscriptions. The subjects illustrated include the Colosseum, the Pantheon, the Roman Forum, the monuments of the Appian Way, and the ruins of St. Paul Outside the Walls, which collapsed in 1823 following a fire. The work was created in collaboration with Bartolomeo Pinelli, who created the costumed figures that animate the view, and achieved immediate success, making the artist firmly renowned. Elephant folio (554 x 735mm). 101 etchings dated between 1819 and 1823, including the engraved title dated 1823 (first plate lightly creased, occasional foxing, small tears lightly affecting the engraving on plates 17 and 19, light marginal staining on the final plates). Contemporary half-vellum, gilt decorations and title on spine (rubbing and chipping at spine ends, vellum on front cover partially detached, scratching and rubbing at the edges). This copy is without a typographic title, which appears not to be present in most auctioned copies or dealer catalogs. Provenance: "Mens conscia recti" (armorial bookplate on endpaper). IT Le antichità romane. Roma: presso l'autore, 1823. Prima edizione della raccolta di tavole di Rossini, caratterizzata da vedute suggestive e maestose dei principali monumenti romani. L’artista concentra l’attenzione sull’architettura antica e sugli scavi della città, dando ampio respiro anche a scene bucoliche e scorci popolari. Nella precisione archeologia di Rossini è evidente l’influsso di Piranesi, dal quale eredita la resa attenta dei luoghi, dei materiali e delle iscrizioni antiche. Tra i soggetti illustrati figurano il Colosseo, il Pantheon, i Fori Romani, i monumenti della via Appia e le rovine di San Paolo fuori le Mura, crollata nel 1823 in seguito a un incendio. L'opera fu realizzata in collaborazione con Bartolomeo Pinelli, autore delle figure in costume che animano le vedute, ed ebbe immediato successo, rendendo celebre l'artista. Folio elefante (554 x 735mm). 101 tavole incise all'acquaforte datate tra il 1819 e il 1823, fra cui il frontespizio inciso datato 1823 (prima tavola lievemente sgualcita, occasionali fioriture, strappetti che toccano lievemente l'incisione alle tavole 17 e 19, lievi aloni marginali alle ultime tavole). Mezza pergamena coeva, decori e titolo in oro al dorso (difetti alle cuffie, pergamena al piatto anteriore parzialmente distaccata, graffi e difetti alle estremità). Questa copia è priva di frontespizio tipografico, che si dice sia stato emesso ma che sembra non essere presente nella maggior parte delle catalogazioni di aste o negozianti.
