Thomas Rowlandson, "The Chamber of Genius", Original Print 1812 - $10K VALUE

Lot 1234: Thomas Rowlandson, "The Chamber of Genius", Original Print 1812 - $10K VALUE

Auction Date: Apr 22, 2021

Estimate: $10,000 - $10,100

Description: This is one of the original prints of the renowned caricaturist and satirical cartoonist Thomas Rowlandson's (1757 – 1827) , 'The Chamber of Genius'. Printed originally as a cartoon for April Fool’s Day in 1812, The Chamber of Genius depicts the scene of a watercolor of an artist seated, working at a canvas and resting his foot on a pile of books. In the background, his female companion is still asleep in bed whilst an unguarded infant pours a drink from a bottle. A second infant sits in front of a fire, busy stoking the flames with bellows. Garments hang from a makeshift line hung across the room and a violin stands propped in the corner. In this drawing of a struggling artist surrounded by his family, Rowlandson contrasts the idleness of the sleeping woman with the industry of her young children. Meant as a satirical piece depicting the foolishness of folly is a rare piece of historical comedy. Thomas Rowlandson was an English painter and caricaturist who illustrated the life of 18th-century England and created comic images of familiar social types of his day. His characters ranged from the ridiculously pretentious, with their elaborate coiffures, widely frogged uniforms, and enormous bosoms and bottoms, to the merely pathetic, whose trailing handkerchiefs expressed their dejected attitudes. Appraisal Value: $10,000.00 Our Price: $3,900.00...
