  • Ferdinand Victor Léon Roybet (1840 – 1920) Musketeer
    Mar. 25, 2026

Ferdinand Victor Léon Roybet (1840 – 1920) Musketeer

    Est: €5,000 - €10,000

Oil on canvas. Dimensions 65 x 54 cm; framed 100 x 85 cm. Bust portrait of a gentleman dressed in the style of the 17th century, wearing a wide-brimmed black hat and enveloped in rich attire of intense reds, golds, and violets, complemented by a white lace ruff that illuminates the ensemble. The figure turns his head slightly and gazes at the viewer with a confident and somewhat defiant expression, while the bearded face and carefully modeled mustache reinforce the haughty and theatrical character of the figure. The composition concentrates all its force in the powerful contrast between the dark hat, which creates a large circular mass around the head, and the chromatic vibrancy of the suit, rendered with impasto and luminous brushstrokes. The artistic quality is evident in the virtuosity with which the textures of the velvet, embroidery, and lace are depicted, as well as in the density of the chiaroscuro that envelops the figure and accentuates its dramatic presence. Based on style, signature, and typology, this work is by Ferdinand Roybet, a French painter famous for his historicist recreations of period figures, highly prized in the second half of the 19th century. It is a visually striking piece where technical refinement and a penchant for evoking the past combine in an image of great elegance and virtuosity.
