A collection of 262 original drawings and watercolours, 1757-1794, 262 watercolours and drawings in pen, ink, and wash, plus three in red chalk, on laid paper, subjects include portraits, mythological and religious studies, classical and landscape scenes, views of English towns, churches and cottages, many signed and dated, some with handwritten caption, some soiling and marginal closed tears, one drawing torn into two and one or two with some minor loss, mostly 20.5 x 14.5 cm, 25 x 17.5 cm and 20 x 32 cm, mostly mounted into two volumes of Acts of Parliament, 1753, original panelled calf gilt, with George II royal coat of arms gilt to boards, extremities worn and some scuffing to boards, upper board of second volume near detached, folio (32 x 20.5 cm) QTY: (2) NOTE: English painter John Russell (1745-1806) was renowned for his portrait work in oils and pastels. British neoclassical sculptor John Bacon (1740-1799) defined him ‘the finest painter in crayon this country ever produced’, while English painter Richard Redgrave praised him as ‘the prince of crayon portrait-painters’ (George C. Williamson, John Russell, R.A., 1894, p. 86). The son of a Guildford bookseller and print seller, Russell soon showed precocious artistic talent and, at the age of 14, won a prize of four guineas from the Society of Arts. After establishing his own studio in London in 1767, he quickly became a portrait painter highly esteemed by fashionable society, and was appointed Crayon Painter to George III in 1790. This remarkable collection of original drawings and watercolours offers a unique opportunity to observe Russell’s artistic development from an early age through to maturity. The first album contains drawings and sketches executed largely between 1757 and 1758, and demonstrates Russell’s remarkable precociousness. Most of his earliest works were copied from engravings that the young artist likely encountered in his father’s bookshop in Guildford. These included engravings by Thomas Worlidge and etchings after Rembrandt, as well as topographical views of Rome and Vienna. In some cases, as with an engraving of a man with a stick by Worlidge, Russell repeated the subject several times, gradually refining his technique and revealing his early artistic development and experimentation. While these early drawings reveal Russell’s youthful genius, the second volume presents a more mature and accomplished style. Executed largely between 1786 and 1794, these watercolours and drawings demonstrate Russell’s interest in landscape painting and provide a pictorial record of his extensive travels throughout England. During visits to Oxford in 1786, he produced views of Merton College, Magdalen College, Oxford Castle, and the local churches of St Martin’s, St Ebbe’s, and St Giles’s. Subjects also include landscapes, churches, and cottages observed during his travels in Buckinghamshire, Sussex, Surrey, Reading, Jersey, Kent, Canterbury, Tetsworth, Hampshire, and Whitby. Signed and dated lower left: J. Russel R. A. pt 1797 Framed under glass Inschrift auf der Rückseite: J. Russel RA/1797, Mrs HB Ogles Portrit / the property of Mrs E. Walpole Browne 1847. Although it is stated on the back of the picture that it is a portrait of Mrs H. B. Ogles, the depiction is more likely to be understood as a genre scene. However, the dates of life do not match the figure of the young woman. Hannah Compton or Mrs Robert Ogle would have been 37 years old in 1797 when the picture was painted. Her daughter Hannah Ogle on the other hand, married to Admiral Edward Walpole Browne, was only 7 years old. The well-known pastel painter John Russel painted similar scenes with a palm reader several times. A comparable version is in the Tate Gallery (J. 64.3762). John Russel became a full member of the Royal Academy of Arts in London in 1788 and was appointed court painter by George III in 1789. We are grateful to Neil Jeffares for confirming this pastel as a work by John Russel and for providing helpful information on the artist and provenance.

This painting appears reproduced in 'Pintores italianos e ingleses. Franceses, alemanes y suizos. Siglos XVII y XVIII'(Italian and English Painters. French, German, and Swiss. 17th and 18th Centuries), an illustrated catalogue of paintings belonging to Spanish Collections. On page 89 of this catalogue, the painting is described as 'one of the most famous of the artist's, depicting Miss Caroline on the right of the painting, accompanied by her two aunts, all dressed in costumes and hats of the period, in light colours and ribbons and with details in blue tones. The central figure is Miss May's aunt, Lady Hollist, the wife of Mr. Hollist, who also posed for one of the painter's most famous paintings.' The painting was exhibited at Salón Cano between November 26 and December 6, 1952, in the exhibition 'Masterpieces of 18th-Century English and Italian Painting.' John Russell was 'One of the eighteenth century's leading pastel portraitists,' according to the National Portrait Gallery, which houses over 100 portraits by his hand, including his self-portrait (circa 1780, inv. NPG 1788). Francis Cotes, a member of the Royal Academy and a pioneer of pastel painting in England, instructed Russell, who entered the Royal Academy art school in 1770 and was not appointed a Royal Academician until 1788. Two years later, in 1790, he was appointed Pastel Painter to King George III, Queen Charlotte, the Prince of Wales, and the Duke of York, a position that brought him fame and clientele. In addition to the National Portrait Gallery and various British museums, the world's largest public collection of John Russell's pastel portraits can be found at the Guildford House Gallery municipal museum. Antique Late 18th Century John Russell R.A. (English, 1745-1806) "Portrait of Woman" Oil Painting on Canvas. Measures approx. - 25" wide x 30 1/4" high, + 3 3/4" frame. Signed and dated 1785. John Russell RA (29 March 1745 20 April 1806) was an English painter renowned for his portrait work in oils and pastels, and as a writer and teacher of painting techniques. Russell was born in Guildford, Surrey, the son of John Russell Sr., book and print seller and five times mayor of the town; his father was something of an artist and drew and published two views of Guildford. Russell was educated at the Royal Grammar School, Guildford, and soon showed a strong inclination for art. He trained under Francis Cotes RA (of Cavendish Square, London), one of the pioneers of English pastel painting, and, like Cotes, was an admirer of the pastel drawings of Rosalba Carriera whose methods influenced his technique of "sweetening". At the age of 19 he converted to Methodism, which was the cause of tension with his family and with his teacher; he made no secret of his strong evangelical leanings and would attempt to preach and convert at every opportunity.

John Russell (English, 1745-1806) Portrait of Jane Garnett, 1788 pastel on paper signed and dated (obscured by frame) 23 1/2 x 17 1/2 inches (sight). Provenance: Anderson Galleries, Inc., 11-12 April 1928, Lot 86. Patricia Ann Black Smyth (1925-2018) was born in Kansas City, Missouri, the daughter of Ernest Bateman Black and Faye Bunyan Black. She attended Miss Crosby's School in Illinois and graduated from Wellesley College in Massachusetts, where she was a lifetime member of the Wellesley Friends of the Library Organization. Mrs. Smyth also served as a member of the Junior League of Kansas City, Missouri, and was a long-time docent at the Art Institute of Chicago. Hindman is thrilled to present Mrs. Smyth's refined and diverse collection, which will be sold without reserve to benefit Berea College in Berea, Kentucky. Berea College was founded in 1855 with the express mission of educating both women and men of all racial backgrounds. It is the South's first racially integrated and co-educational college and is guided by the motto from Acts 17:26: 'God has made of one blood all peoples of the earth.' Only students with high academic promise and limited financial means are accepted, and every student receives a Tuition Promise Scholarship-no student pays tuition. As a Work College, every student works at least 10 hours per week to help pay for housing, meals and personal expenses. Berea students have the lowest amount of student debt in the country, and half graduate debt free. Today, Berea serves over 1,600 students, the majority of which are from Kentucky and Appalachia, although its student body hails from over 40 states and 70 countries. Berea depends heavily on alumni and friends to continue to fulfill the no-tuition promise made to every student.
