  • AMERICAN COLLAGE MIXED MEDIA PAINTING BY ANNE RYAN
    Jul. 13, 2024

AMERICAN COLLAGE MIXED MEDIA PAINTING BY ANNE RYAN

    Est: $100 - $150

Anne Ryan, American, 1889 to 1954, a collage mixed media painting on paper depicting an abstract expressionist composition. Signed lower right. Framed. Anne Ryan was an American Abstract Expressionist artist associated with the New York School. Her first contact with the New York City avant garde came in 1941 when she joined the Atelier 17, a famous printmaking workshop that the British artist Stanley William Hayter had established in Paris in the 1930s and then brought to New York when France fell to the Nazis. She right away dedicated herself to this newly discovered medium. Since Anne Ryan was a poet, according to Deborah Solomon, in Kurt Schwitterss collages she recognized the visual equivalent of her sonnets discrete images packed together in an extremely compressed space. Modern and Contemporary American Fine Art, Abstract Expressionist Paintings, Wall Art, and Collectibles.

Anne Ryan (American, 1889-1954) - Table

    Est: $4,000 - $6,000

Anne Ryan (American, 1889-1954) - Table Signed ‘A. Ryan’ bottom right; also signed and titled verso, oil on board 11 ¾ x 15 ½ in. (29.8 x 39.4cm) Executed in 1943.  Provenance Sotheby's Arcade, New York, sale of May 27, 1998, lot 350. Acquired directly from the above sale. The Collection of Sidney Rothberg, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Exhibition Worcester Art Museum, Worcester, Massachusetts, n.d. “Vanguard American Paintings of the Thirties and Forties,” Gallery Schlesinger Boissante, New York, New York, March 20-May 1, 1982.  Lot Essay Anne Ryan's paintings from the mid-1940s represent something of a crossroads in her career. While she had previously experimented with etchings and portraits, this period saw an increased emphasis on still life. These works often balance intimate depictions of everyday objects (i.e. fruit or, as in the present lot, household furniture) with a burgeoning interest in abstraction. It is conceivable that Ryan’s shift towards a bolder palette and simplified forms hints at the influence of the emerging Abstract Expressionist movement. Works like Table laid the groundwork for her mature, small-scale collages, which solidified her position within the post-war avant-garde.

Mixed media collage on paper, c. 1950, signed 'A Ryan' lower right, with label from Washburn Gallery, NY, Andre Emmerich Gallery, NY, Hirschl & Adler Modern, NY and Sidney Janis Gallery, NY. 7 1/2 x 5 3/4 in. (sheet), 13 3/4 x 11 1/2 in. (frame). Note: Anne Ryan was a self-taught writer, printmaker and painter who began making collages at age fifty-eight. The medium would become her preferred creative expression over the last six years of her life. Ryan was introduced to collage-making during a visit to a 1948 exhibition of the work of German sculptor and collagist Kurt Schwitters. In her earliest collage works from 1949-1950, Ryan emulates Schwitters' incorporation of snippets of language into the composition, as here.
