    • Luigi Sabatelli (Firenze 1772-Milano 1850) - Portraits of the Bacchetta spousessold
      Nov. 10, 2022

Luigi Sabatelli (Firenze 1772-Milano 1850) - Portraits of the Bacchetta spouses

      Est: €3,000 - €5,000

both pen and black ink on paper 282 x 200 mm each the male portrait is signed and dedicated in the lower right: Luigi Sabatelli made a gift to his friend; the female portrait is inscribed in the lower left: The author as a sign of friendship he gives to the Bacchetta On the back, the female portrait bears the inscription: Sotto il day 14 October 1822 / at eight o'clock in the evening of that day / his practitioner Cozzi Giò Batta in the company / of Mrs. Marietta De-Simoni Bacchetta of his wife / Mr. Luigi Cozzi, who has to leave for the / mountains in a few days. Mr. Abbondio Bagutti painter of (...) / Mr. Ignazio Caccia nephew of the aforementioned Mr. Bacchetta / and the very kind of him (...) Antonietta and Bianchina / Hurray / Health, happiness, and childlike. As reported in the Archive of the Municipality of Milan in the Population Register of 1811, it appears that the painter Luigi Sabatelli "has lived for 3 years at Civic Num. 1923 First Floor of the house owned by Francesco Bacchetta". On the back of one of the two portraits, namely the female one, dated October 14, 1822, we discover a real cenacle around Sabatelli in those years; the presence of Abbondio Bagutti, a colleague of Sabatelli, and a painter of good quality, is also noted. As a sign of gratitude, the great artist - master in Brera - created these two portraits for the hosts with a dedication. They clearly demonstrate the technical expertise of Sabatelli, one of the greatest exponents of Italian neoclassicism and not detached from a new romantic ferment, who was also a celebrated engraver.
