Janice Sachse (American/Louisiana, 1908-1998), "Floral Still Life", oil on canvas, signed lower left, 24 1/4 in. x 20 in., framed. Provenance: Betsy Toups Estate sale. Note: Janice Sachse was born in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, the daughter of Isaac H. Rubenstein, a businessman instrumental in securing the land for the current Louisiana State University campus. Sachse studied art at LSU under Conrad Albrizio and at Newcomb College of Art in New Orleans. She is primarily known for her oil paintings of Louisiana landscapes including, perhaps her best-known works, the “Interstate Series.” Sachse traveled along the newly built interstate in the 1970’s painting the scenery in areas of the state that were difficult to reach before the roadway made them more accessible. In the work offered here, Sachse presents a more traditional scene of a bright blue vase filled with a brilliantly colored bouquet of flowers. She layers paint and pieces of canvas to create a collage effect, giving the still life a sense of depth and movement.
