Stephen Sacklarian 1889-1983

Sacklarian's paintings are in over 60 museums around the world including The Smithsonian Institution, National Museum of American Art, The Philadelphia Museum of Art, The Minneapolis Museum of Art, The Everson Museum of Art, The Museo de Arte Moderno, Mexico City, The Royal Fine Arts Center, Brussels, Belgium and The Museo National de Arte, La Paz, Bolivia.

Sacklarian studied art at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Art, the T- Square Club-School for Architects, The Philadelphia College of Art, the Fleisher Memorial Art School, and in private study with the famous sculptor, Paul Manship.

Over a long and productive career, during extensive travel, Sacklarian visited with Picasso, Henry Moore, Gorky, Matisse and other prominent artists. Sacklarian would always tell anecdotes and speak fondly of the times he visited their studios. Sacklarian was artist-in-residence at Notre Dame University. He was also a guest lecturer at numerous other Universities. Sacklarian received numerous awards and honors throughout his long career.

Sacklarian's artistic world is populated with amorphous figures and whimsical forms that often float against bright, angular backgrounds or subtle dark fields of color. Sacklarian is quite sophisticated in his use of color, perspective, and composition. Each painting is unique and unusual. Some are brooding; most are charming and full of mischievous humor. Many have sly sexual references. Sacklarian's palette favored bright rich colors. He is considered by critics to be a true master painter

Sacklarian's paintings have sold at auction at Phillip's, Christie's and Sotheby's.

In a foreword to a 1977 catalog of Sacklarian's work, David W. Scott, the founding director of the National Museum of American Art, wrote: "When I first saw Stephen Sacklarian's work, on a visit to his Philadelphia studio some ten years ago, I was struck by his absorption in painting and the imprint of this dedication on the paintings themselves. The reproductions in this brochure reveal this same dedication. Sacklarian has written about the dark mysteries and forces that find expression in his imagery. Without doubt, the grotesques and humanoids that populate them are subject to strange tensions and spells. Significant but occult dramas are taking place. However, the overriding impression his pictures convey is that of the vital, impetuous energy and spirit, a prolific artist with a wide-ranging imagination. In canvas after canvas, he invents new orders of shapes, colors and textures, all conveying emotion-charged episodes drawn from his visionary world. His puppets enact dramatizations of human plights, frustrations and fears, but the puppeteer and his theater radiate the joy of life and of creation."

    STEPHEN SACKLARIAN (ARMENIAN-AMERICAN, 1889-1983), CARVED WOOD GROUP OF EMBRACING COUPLE born in Bulgaria in 1899, Stephen Sacklarian was a painter and sculptor whose work was a blend of Abstract Expressionism with elements of Cubism and Surrealism. His family immigrated to the United States in 1911, and Sacklarian grew up poor in Philadelphia. He attended Wharton School of Business, where he graduated with honors. Once he decided to pursue art full time, he painted realistically, but he later transitioned to abstractionism and developed the unique painting style for which he is known. Picasso, Matisse and other prominent 20th Century artists, including Paul Manship, inspired his work. During the late 1950s and early 1960s, Sacklarian produced numerous wood sculptures, ranging from 12 inches to over 8 feet tall. His sculptures have been described as "sensuous and dramatic," and with noticeable influences from African Art. Today, very few of his sculptures still exist, as he destroyed most of the work in his studio following his wife Ayne's death. Sacklarian's paintings and sculpture typically feature human and animal forms, limbs, faces and sexual organs.
