Utagawa Sadahide (1807-1879) Detailed View of Yokohama Honcho and Miyozaki Pleasure Quarters 1859-1860 The striking oban triptych bird's-eye view of Yokohama Port coincides with the aftermath of the 1859 opening of the port to foreign trade, and its rapid development following the arrival of the ''Black Ships'' following Japan's 200 years of isolation, The work serves as an overview map of the city's various districts, including the Gankiro, a famous teahouse and licensed brothel in the Miyozaki pleasure district, established to cater to the influx of wealthy foreign merchants and sailors. An American flag is depicted in the lower right corner. The small red rectangular cartouches throughout mark the location of specific merchants, teahouses, consulates and other destinations - much like the pins on a Google map. These prints were intended to be sold as souvenirs to tourists who traveled from the interior of Japan to see the ''foreigners'' allowed into the country, specifically the port of Yokohoma, for the first time in over 200 years. Sugoroku Game of The Famous Places of Edo (Tokyo) Circa 1850-1865 A large-format Japanese color woodblock sugoroku game sheet presenting a pictorial tour of the famous places of Edo, the city now known as Tokyo, which at the time was the largest, or one of the very largest, cities in the world. Designed as both entertainment and geography lesson, the sheet invited players to move step by step across the city's landmarks, each identified by small red cartouches, serving to both educate and entertain. Mt Jujii dominates the top horizon line. Footnote: Sugoroku in this period (1865) were large-format Japanese printed board games in which players progress along a pictorial route by dice throws. They were made to be folded, used, punctured and ultimately disposed of. A well preserved example like the present print are very rare. By Utagawa Sadahide (1807-1873). Published By Tsujiokaya Bunsuke, Edo. New Edition Processional Sugoroku of the Fifty-three Stations of the Tokaido. 1865 A large and very rare color woodblock Sugoroku (pictorial board game) depicting a procession along the Tokaido road. This work was published following Tokugawa Iemochi's 1863-1865 journeys to Kyoto, the first such visits by a Shogun (a Japanese military commander) in over two centuries. The 'game' begins at 'First Station: Edo' and concludes at the 'Agari' (Goal) in Kyoto. Sugoroku in this period (1865) were large-format Japanese printed board games in which players progress along a pictorial route by dice throws. Many were based on well-known travel circuits or major historical developments such as the procession of Shogun Iemochi. Each vertical red banner marks an important stop or landmark. Sugoroku were made to be folded, used, punctured and ultimately disposed of. A well preserved example like the present print are very rare. The Ise Ondo Dance Performance at the Bizenya Pleasure House in Furuichi

Japan, published in the Meiji period, 1897 (original design earlier, as the artist died in 1879) This compositionally complex woodblock print offers an immersive view into the interior of Bizenya, the largest and most prestigious brothel in the Furuichi red-light district (Ise Province), also known as Gyusharou. Bizenya is historically renowned for being the first establishment in Furuichi to perform the famous Ise Ondo dance, dating back to the Kan'ei era (1624–1645). Far from a static display, the print vividly captures a dynamic, mass performance of this dance on a unique elevating stage (seriage) invented by the house in 1794. Dozens of courtesans (yūjo) in identical blue kimonos are depicted in synchronized motion, accompanied by shamisen players in the immediate foreground. At the bottom, guests are shown marveling at this grand production. The colophon in the bottom left corner dates the publication of this specific impression to the 30th year of the Meiji period (1897).

An early actor portrait depicting the celebrated kabuki star Bandō Mitsugorō III (1783–1831) as Tō no Shigenobu, a reincarnation of the pheasant spirit (Yamadori no sei). The scene belongs to a shōsagoto dance drama, where the actor embodies a mythological being with avian attributes — a favorite subject of early 19th-century kabuki stage. With its dynamic diagonal composition, refined movement, and softly faded color palette, the print bears all the hallmarks of Sadahide’s early style, still deeply influenced by his teacher Utagawa Kunisada and the Toyokuni tradition. It stands as a document of the transitional phase in actor portraiture, bridging late-Edo elegance and emerging modern sensibilities. Wohl Edo (Tokio), Daikokuya Kinosukeju-han, um 1850. -- – Dieses Einzelblatt, einst Teil eines Triptychons, zeigt eine Küstenansicht vermutlich von Ôsaka. Die Darstellung folgt dem von der Kulturwissenschaftlerin Jilly Traganou beschriebenen panoramic style, der sowohl eine makroskopische Gesamtansicht als auch mikroskopische Details wie Gebäude und Boote vereint - eine Kombination aus realistischer und illusionistischer Darstellung. – Einzelblatt aus einem Triptychon, im linken Seitenrand mit Abrissspuren und leichter Bräunung.

Depicts a intricately colored parade of soldiers by the Shogun Yoritomo Minamoto (1147-1199) visiting the Goshirakawa Emperor at Kyoto in 1191. Multiple instances of kanji throughout, in the three-sheet ukiyo-e woodblock print called "hanga." Overall Size: 36 1/2 x 22 in. Sight Size: 29 x 13 1/2 in. #9017 . Utagawa Sadahide (also known as Gountei Sadahide) was born Hashimoto KenjirÅ in 1807 in Fusa Province (modern day Chiba Prefecture) in ShimÅsa, Japan. He joined Utagawa school master Kunisada’s studio in the 1820s and became one of the master’s most prominent students. As a member of the school, he took on Utagawa as a surname, and also used the surname Gountei as an art name, eventually returning to his birth surname as an art name very late in his career. Sadahide’s earliest known works are the illustrations for a book called Misaogata Tsuge no Ogushi, and led him to become a popular illustrator throughout his career. In 1828, three years after the death of Utagawa Toyokuni, Kunisada built a stone monument in Myokendo, on which the names of his students were inscribed, and Sadahide was the fourth name on the monument at the age of only 21. However, when Kunisada took over the school and became Toyokuni III after the death of Toyokuni II in 1835, most of his students followed suit and changed their “Sada” kanji to “Kuni,” but Sadahide did not change his art name, having already achieved prominence on his own by then. Kunisada, famous for his temper, jealousy, and intractability, disowned Sadahide, and never spoke to him again before his death in 1865. Most of Sadahide’s early works were bijin-ga portraits of beauties, before broadening his output to landscapes and musha-e warrior prints. In particular, he excelled at painting bird’s eye view of landscapes based on his research by actually walking around the land. In the 1850s Sadahide became known for his prints of exotic locales, showing scenes from the First Opium War in China and for favorably depicting the Ainu people of Ezo, the name for the northernmost part of Japan at the time. After discovering Dutch mapmaking techniques he became obsessed with their detail and precision, and began to produce print maps of Edo, Yokohama, Japan, China, and other parts of the world, one of the first Japanese artists to capture such far away locations. When Japan ended its self-imposed isolation in 1854 he began to make prints of foreigners, their vessels, and the goods they brought to Japan, which made him even more popular with both Japanese consumers and visiting Europeans. His works are some of the earliest Japanese woodblocks depicting foreigners in a positive light, showing activities like dining together or playing badminton. In the 1860s the artist moved to Nagasaki and began to focus on panoramic prints, some of the largest ever created by ukiyo-e artists, and produced books on the history and geography of Japan and nearby lands. He joined ten other artists as part of a delegation the Tokugawa shogunate sent to the International Exposition of 1867 in Paris, where ten of his Edo views were exhibited. Sadahide died in 1879, shortly after completing an experiment in printing a map of Yokohama the size of an indoor tatami (floor) mat. Today he is considered one of the most important and best-selling ukiyo-e artists in history, and his work is held in dozens of museums worldwide including the Harvard Art Museums, the National Museum of Korea, the British Museum, the National Museum of New Zealand, and the Suntory Museum of Art in Tokyo.
