The Story of Niobe and her Children, after Hendrick Goltzius, after Polidoro da Caravaggio, Rome, 1594, a fine complete set of the eight engravings on laid paper, with watermark (unidentified), the first state, based on drawings of the Polidoro frescoes by Hendrick Goltzius, very good, dark, clear impressions, trimmed outside the platemark, sheet size 270 x 400 mm (10 5/8 x 15 3/4 ins) or very similar, each mounted on larger sheets of 18th century laid paper with hand-painted framing border and two single-rule outer border lines in thick black ink, backing sheets 360 x 525 mm QTY: (8) NOTE: Provenance: Oettingen Wallerstein Collection; Trinity Fine Art and Artemis, London, by 2005; Private Collection, London. Hollstein XXIII.86.113 I; B. a-h; Bartsch III.231.33; W. II. 545.33 This magnificent series illustrates the dramatic climax of the Greek mythological story of Niobe, Queen of Thebes, who boastfully claimed she was superior to the goddess Leto because she had fourteen children while Leto only had two. They depict the vengeance of the gods Apollo and Diana, sent by Leto to slay Niobe's children with arrows. The composition is from one of the panels in Polidoro's fresco cycle on the facade of the Palazzo Milesi, Rome, which he painted around 1525 to 1527. T hrough centuries of exposure, the frescoes have now practically disappeared. Goltzius was in Rome in 1591, when he presumably made his drawn versions which form the model for Saenredam's prints. In Saenredam's engravings something of Goltzius's style shows through in the figures .

Polidoro da Caravaggio, Jan Saenredam - Punishment of Niobe - Rare early state

Fifth plate from the series, early state before the number and probably also a first state as the other plate on auction from this series. A young girl, encouraged by a group of figures, offers a priest a small figurine; the priest holds a staff and gestures with his other arm; at left is a statue of Latona on an ornamented pedestal; besides the statue a youth holds a casket. The design is based on one of the many frescoes by Polidoro da Caravaggio (1499-1543) brought into drawing by Hendrick Goltzius and engraved by Jan Saenredam, his pupil and best engraver of his work.

Date: c. 1595 Description: The artwork shows a scene in a workshop in which four people are engaged in various activities. On the left in the foreground is a man holding a saw and working intently. Next to him sits a woman in elaborate clothing with frills and pearls, playing a musical instrument, possibly a dulcimer. Another man, wearing a hat, can be seen in the centre of the picture and appears to be carving or working on something. The woman on the right, also elegantly dressed, is looking at her companion. A building can be seen in the background, while an angel on a cloud appears in the sky. The composition is rich in detail and the movements and interactions of the figures are vivid and dynamic. Lediglich Le Blanc und Wurzbach erwähnen einen Druckzustand vor dieser Adresse; Hollstein und Roethlisberger konnten diesen Druckzustand jedoch nicht nachweisen, sodass es sich hier wohl um den frühst möglichen Druckzustand handelt. Ganz ausgezeichneter, klarer und dabei kräftiger Abzug mit noch einigen sichtbaren Hilfslinien, mit der vollen Darstellung, minimal knapp, unten mit dem Schriftrand, dieser links minimal schräg geschnitten.
