Augustus Saint-Gaudens (1848-1907) Bronze Portrait, Robert Louis Stevenson

Lot 59: Augustus Saint-Gaudens (1848-1907) Bronze Portrait, Robert Louis Stevenson

Auction Date: Jan 16, 2020

Estimate: $15,000 - $25,000

Description: Framed Augustus Saint-Gaudens (1848-1907) bronze tondo portrait of Robert Louis Stevenson. Inscription begins, "Youth Now Flees on Feathered Foot…." At lower center, "Copyright by Augustus Saint Gaudens". Circa 1893. Partial D.B. Butler & Co label verso, (New York framers). Dimensions: (bronze) 17.75" diameter; (framed) 26.5"h x 24.5"w. Provenance: Estate of William B. Ruger, Jr.Born in Dublin, Ireland, Augustus Saint-Gaudens became one of the more famous American sculptors of the late 19th century and was associated with a period called The Gilded Age. He brought the Beaux Arts style to America, as he had studied in Italy and France. A work for which he is particularly known is the monumental statue "Diana," a gilded copper weathervane for the top of the Madison Square Garden Tower in New York City. In 1875, he returned to New York and worked for Tiffany Studios and became part of a team of artists who did decoration in Boston for Trinity Church, designed by H.H. Richardson. Impressed by Robert Louis Stevenson’s collection of stories "New Arabian Nights" (1882), Saint-Gaudens told their mutual friend, Will Low, that he would be honored to model a portrait if the writer were ever to come to the United States. The opportunity presented itself in 1887–88, when Stevenson (1850–1894) sat for the sculptor in New York and later in Manasquan, New Jersey. Stevenson, suffering from tuberculosis, is shown writing in bed, as was his custom. The lengthy inscription is a poem by Stevenson dedicated to Low and published in 1887, "Underwood". The portrait became Saint-Gaudens’s most popular relief and was produced in three diameters as well as in rectangular variants. For shipping quote, please contact Box Brothers Sacramento at [email protected]   ...

Description: Important bronze relief of American artist Francis Davis Millet, executed by famed sculptor St. Gaudens (American, 1848-1907). A hugely important American artist and sculptor, St. Gaudens is perhaps most universally known for the U.S. $20 gold piece of his design. Millet was quite an accomplished painter and sculptor in his own right who died, along with 1,600 others, aboard the Titanic, April 15, 1912. This plaque measures about 10-1/2" x 6-3/4"....

Augustus Saint Gaudens. Bronze rectangular plaque. Jules Bastien-LePage. The artist holding his brushes. Titled and signed along the top. MDCCLXXX. Original oak frame. AUGUSTUS SAINT-GAUDENS (1848-1907) bronze portrait medallion depicting Robert Louis Stevenson with presentation inscription to Eugenie and Oliver Emerson along with a verse from a poem by Stevenson. Signed upper right AUGUSTUS SAINT-GAUDENS XMAS MDCCCC and also dated on medallion MDCCCLXXXVII (1887). Provenance: descended in the Arthur Ashael Shurcliff family specifically via Margaret Homer (Nichols) Shurcliff (1879-1959). Margaret Shurcliff, whose family’s home (The Nichols House Museum) is on Mount Vernon Street in Beacon Hill, also had a summer home in Cornish, New Hampshire. Margaret Nichols was the wife of William A. Shurcliff. Margaret modeled as an archer with a drape for SAINT-GAUDENS as a young girl. Additional provenance: this medallion has resided at a related collateral residence of Thomas Mott Shawn in Concord, Massachusetts. Shaw was a noted Boston architect best known for his work with John D. Rockefeller,Jr. in helping to design much of what is now known as Colonial Williamsburg. Thomas Mott Shaw is a direct descendant of Robert Gould Shaw of the famous Massachusetts 54th Regiment of the Civil War. The noted bronze masterpiece the Shaw Memorial by SAINT-GAUDENS is located on Beacon Street in Boston. AUGUSTUS SAINT-GAUDENS (1848-1907) rectangular bronze portrait plaque depicting Jules Bastien-Lepage (1848-1884) Inscribed, dated and signed JULES BASTIEN-LEPAGE AETATIS XXXI · PARIS · MDCCCLXXX · AVGVSTVS ·/SAINT-GAVDENS · FECIT across the top. This work is one of several editions of a bas relief portrait of Jules Bastien-Lepage by Saint-Gaudens. Modeled in 1880, Jules Bastien-Lepage was completed soon after the artist's Joan of Arc was given by a patron to New York's The Metropolitan Museum of Art on Saint-Gauden's recommendation. The sculptor remembered Bastien-Lepage as "short, bullet-headed, athletic, and in comparison with the majority of my friends, dandified in dress" and his relief sculpture reflects both the artist's neat appearance and pride in his profession with palette and brushes readily displayed (Homer Saint Gaudens, ed. The Reminiscences of Augustus Saint-Gaudens, New York, 1913, vol. 1, p. 215). According to his son Homer, Saint-Gaudens believed Jules Bastien-Lepage to be "as near perfection" as any of the portrait medallions he completed (as quoted in Saint Gaudens, ed., p. 219). Other Notes: For a similar example, see Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, 1978.93.

Though Augusts Saint-Gaudens is perhaps best known for his large scale commemorative bronze sculptures and reliefs, he also designed coins for the US in the early 20th century. Two of his coins, the Gold Indian Head Eagle and the Gold Double Eagle, are widely sought after today. This bronze relief, which depicts the head of Nike, was a design for the one-cent piece; however, the design was never produced as a coin.
This relief originally belonged to the sculptor John Paramino and his wife. Boston-based Paramino created several of the commemorative bronzes in the Boston Common, including the Lafayette Memorial and the Declaration of Independence. His "Founders Memorial," which depicts the meeting of John Winthrop and William Blackstone, the earliest settlers of Boston, is along the Common at Beacon and Spruce Streets, while Saint-Gaudens "Robert Gould Shaw Memorial" is just a block up the street.

Saint-Gaudens, Sculpture of Nike-Eirene, Bronze

Lot 4124: Saint-Gaudens, Sculpture of Nike-Eirene, Bronze

Auction Date: Dec 29, 2013

Estimate: $70,000 - $80,000

Description: Augustus Saint-Gaudens (American, 1848-1907)Bronze "The Head of Victory" 8 1/4 x 7 1/8 x 6 1/2 in. (20.3 x 17.8 x 16.5 cm)(bronze only excluding the marble base)Signed and dated A. Saint - Gaudens MCMVII (1907) Provenance: From the collection of Hyatt Lemoine of New Haven, Connecticut. Hyatt was a professor at Yale University and an astute bronze collector*The Head of Victory is excerpted from the winged female figure that leads Civil War hero William Tecumseh Sherman in Saint-Gaudens' Sherman Monument (1892-1903; Grand Army Plaza, New York). In the course of producing the monument, the sculptor modeled several versions. He based his first study on the features of Hettie Anderson, who posed for him in New York in 1897. According to his son Homer, the sculptor was dissatisfied with the result for "he felt that he had filled it with overmuch 'personality.' Then the second attempt ... although intrinsically of greater worth, appeared even more out of keeping with the monument. So finally he was forced to return to his earlier model." Even as the Sherman Monument was being cast in Paris, Saint-Gaudens continued to rework elements of Victory's head, requesting that the laurel leaves be more pointed and altering the treatment of the hair. For the Head of Victory, Saint-Gaudens went to the second, unused study, which he had preferred. The treatment of this version's facial features is rigidly classical, and purposefully lacks the passion conveyed by the Victory used in the monument, and also in its reduction (17.90.1). The head has a crown of laurel and hair secured in a Grecian knot. It is terminated at the neck and rests on a tablet inscribed "Nikh-Eiphnh" (Victory-Peace). The Museum was extremely fortunate to purchase this Head of Victory directly from Saint-Gaudens, who paid special attention to the finishing of this bronze, shortly before his death in 1907.* Metropolitan Museum of Art: http://www.metmuseum.org/toah/works-of-art/07.90...
