    AXEL SALTO (Denmark, 1889-1961), for Royal Copenhagen. Organic bowl, ca.1960. Glazed stoneware. Marked on the base with Royal Copenhagen stamp and model numbering. In good general condition according to the antique. Measurements: 11 x 27 x 27 cm. This bowl stands out for its organic conception and its densely modeled surface by means of a relief of interlaced forms that evoke processes of vegetal growth, in line with the famous "knoppeskyde" style (sprouting or germination) developed by Axel Salto. The glaze, in brown tones with irregular shades, intensifies the almost biomorphic character of the piece, generating effects of depth and light vibration that reinforce its sculptural dimension. Considered one of the great masters of 20th century ceramics, Axel Salto trained at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts and began his career as a painter, joining modernist circles at an early age. After his time in Paris, where he came into contact with figures such as Picasso and Matisse, he became a key figure in Danish modernism, participating in the magazine Klingen (1917-1920). His dedication to ceramics began in 1925, consolidating in manufactures such as Bing & Grøndahl and, later, in Royal Copenhagen, where he worked from 1933.

The model/type is described and known from the years around 1932-1936. Provenance: The painter Lauritz Tuxen's family: Wedding gift 16 Sept. 1936 to Kapellmeister Erik Tuxen and wife Eddie Tuxen the couple also received a complete Kaare Klint furniture set on the same occasion. The bowl has since been in the family's possession and has not previously been offered for public sale.

    Vase of light stoneware, modeled in vertical relief. Approx. 1945. Reddish-golden mottled glaze. Signed Salto, and wavy lines for Royal Copenhagen. Casting no. 20787 or 20737, (20737 as being Salto vase approx. 1945) and glaze no. S/4011. H. 40 cm. NB! The casting number is not in accordance with Leif Lautrup Larsen's overview in the book 'Stoneware - The Royal Porcelain Factory', 2007, pp. 442 and 443. According to information from Royal Copenhagen, the numbering is done by hand, so errors may occur. Shards and glaze indicate production in the late war years or shortly thereafter.
