Literature: Renato Barilli: Salvo, Milan 1987, p. 49 (with ill.). The painting by Salvo depicts a strongly simplified landscape with a small village grouped around a central church tower. Houses, trees and mountains are translated into clear geometric forms. A path leads into the scene, while beyond it an intensely coloured sky opens up. Striking are the vivid colours: luminous, at times seemingly unnatural tones such as violet clouds or saturated greens define the image. Light permeates the entire composition evenly and intensifies the effect of the colours. The landscape remains devoid of people and is entirely focused on form, colour and space. This formal clarity is linked to Salvo’s artistic development in the 1970s. After initially working within the context of Arte Povera, he increasingly turned to painting and developed a reduced visual language featuring recurring landscapes, sunsets and city views. The impressions and memories gained during his travels through the Mediterranean region also flow into his pictorial worlds and shape his choice of motifs. A well-known anecdote underlines his fascination with light particularly vividly: on his way to see a sunset in time, Salvo caused a car accident. His justification was that he had been driving fast in order not to miss the perfect moment of light. Das Licht durchzieht die gesamte Komposition gleichmässig und verstärkt die Wirkung der Farben. Die Landschaft bleibt menschenleer und konzentriert sich ganz auf Form, Farbe und Raum. Diese formale Klarheit steht im Zusammenhang mit Salvos künstlerischer Entwicklung in den 1970er-Jahren. Nachdem er zuvor im Umfeld der Arte Povera tätig ist, wendet er sich zunehmend der Malerei zu und entwickelt dabei eine reduzierte Bildsprache mit wiederkehrenden Landschaften, Sonnenuntergängen und Stadtansichten. Auch die gewonnenen Eindrücke und Erinnerungen seiner Reisen durch den Mittelmeerraum fliessen in seine Bildwelten ein und prägen die Wahl seiner Motive. Eine bekannte Anekdote unterstreicht seine Faszination für Licht besonders eindrücklich: Auf dem Weg, rechtzeitig einen Sonnenuntergang zu sehen, verursacht Salvo einen Autounfall. Seine Begründung: Er sei schnell gefahren, um den perfekten Moment des Lichts nicht zu verpassen. Dieses Ereignis verdeutlicht die zentrale Rolle von Licht und Farbe in seinem Denken und Arbeiten, die auch in diesem Werk deutlich sichtbar wird.

He moved to Turin in 1956 and created there for a long time. In the late 1960s, he participated in Arte Povera and Conceptual Art, exploring identity, history and self-myth through marble inscriptions and self-referential photography. In the early 1970s, he turned to easel painting, integrating the styles of the Renaissance and Metaphysical Art (Giorgio de Chirico), creating landscapes and urban scenes with hyper-saturated colors and a dreamy atmosphere. After the 1980s, he focused on landscape creation, using intense colors and simplified forms to create poetic spaces of "suspended time", becoming an important representative of Italian post-modern painting. His works are collected in the European Parliament, major international art museums and private collections.
