Contemplation dated 2011 oil on canvas, collage on sand blasted mirror 54 1/4" x 72" (138 cm x 183 cm) PROVENANCE Christie's, Asian Contemporary Art (Day Sale), Hong Kong, 27 November 2011, Lot 1485   “From the 2009 show, my works evolved abruptly. I did a collage with cut-out canvas, collage in convex mirror, collage in shattered mirror, and then, recently, collage and acrylic in clear cast resin. I think this is the product of a continuous search for possibilities [in regard] to medium or experimenting within the medium itself.” —ARTURO SANCHEZ, MANILA BULLETIN ARTICLE ENTITLED “ARTURO SANCHEZ IS AN ARCHITECT OF VISUAL NARRATIVES,” PUBLISHED JULY 19, 2021   A graduate of architecture, the works of multimedia artist Arturo Sanchez combine the spontaneity of his usage of a multitude of artistic forms and the precision and design skills he had cultivated during his college years. An innovator, Sanchez dabbles in a multitude of art forms, making use of different source materials in a style he calls “collages.” These collages eventually became his signature medium, the foundation of his practice that set him apart from the rest. From his 2009 show, Sanchez’s works evolved rapidly. His impartial usage of multiple media in one canvas — ranging from cut-out canvases, mirrors, and resin-encased collages, among others — creates a story laid down by multiple layered visual cues. His 2011 Contemplation encapsulates the best of early Sanchez works. A layered piece playing on negative spaces, color inversions, and mirrored images, this work shows two mirrored images of the same woman. Rendered in reversed black-and-white, Sanchez depicts the same woman duplicated beside each other, one hand raised tentatively to the skies and their eyes locked in a faraway gaze. Their billowing skirts occupy the lower half of the canvas, providing solace for the bird transfixed on a piece of branch. The bird and the branch, in quintessential Sanchez, were both made from sand-blasted mirror. When used as a literary device, the mirror becomes an invitation for further introspection. One must stop on their tracks and look into one’s reflection, to be imbued by the human condition and their never-ending quest for answers that have confounded philosophers for as long as humanity has lived. The bird that has settled on the woman’s skirt seems to be a crow. A prominent figure in various bodies of myths, the crows have a plethora of meanings — often said to be a symbol of bad luck, crows could also be seen as companions of the gods. However, this particular piece seems to echo another meaning of the black bird: that of the eternal sleep. As is the case with Sanchez, this can be gleaned through the images painted on the mirror backing. He has collaged images depicting the three stages of life behind the mirrors depicting the branch and the bird. To create this effect, he peeled away the painted backing of the mirror before inserting his cutouts and sealing them with lacquer. The effect is haunting: a looking glass trapping worlds within itself. Through his enumeration of “budding, blooming, and deterioration,” Sanchez’s Contemplation is a haunting piece of media that encapsulates within itself a living world. From the purported beginning to its putative conclusion, Contemplation carries not the devastation of the end but the introspection for the future, a continuing of the cycle. (Hannah Valiente)

Silver Tears dated 2013 oil on canvas and collage on convex mirror 60" x 96" (152 cm x 244 cm) EXHIBITED: Blanc Gallery, Elsewhere, Quezon City, 13 September - 20 October, 2013 Filipino artist Arturo Sanchez for his innovative use of mirrors in his artworks, transforming paintings into reflective surfaces of reality. This technique is exemplified in this untitled mixed media piece. In this work, Sanchez takes the concept further by integrating the mirror as both a reflective surface and a ground for paint. Circular portraits of people, among other odds and ends, float against a backdrop of a black, catastrophic whirlwind that obliterates everything in its path. These circular portraits represent pinpoints of "hope" amidst an inevitable doom. They serve as vestiges of the living, persisting collectively as an enduring record of humanity's resilience in the face of adversity. Sanchez's work challenges viewers to contemplate the intersection of hope and despair, reflecting on the fragility of existence while celebrating the indomitable spirit of humanity. Through his art, Sanchez invites us to confront the complexities of the human condition and find solace in the enduring power of hope and humanity. (Jed Daya)

Arturo Sanchez (b. 1980) Silence Falls

    Est: ₱300,000 - ₱390,000

Silence Falls dated 2013 oil on canvas and collage 60" x 96" (152 cm x 243 cm) Arturo Sanchez Jr. is an architecture graduate from the Technological Institute of the Philippines. Despite garnering a degree in architecture, Sanchez’ passion has always been painting, as he dedicates most of his available time to it. Unique is Sanchez’ oeuvre, as he innovatively incorporates the use of collaged glass in his works — from random glass shards to figures silhouette in glass. These dark, melancholic oil works with collaged glass elements have gained him acclaim and recognition, and continue to be sought after pieces by collectors. The somber oil paintings are not coincidentally meld with the collaged glass — nor are the shards and figures random juxtapositions of media. The use of glass, the artist explains, refers to the fragments of memories of things gone — of moments and places destroyed. (J.D.)

    Est: ₱100,000 - ₱130,000

Arturo Sanchez 1980 The Old Man's Ghost mixed media Notable for his body of work that employs mirrors as a way to incorporate the reflection of the viewer into the pictorial space, Arturo Sanchez Jr, furthers his experimentation and utilizes sculpted pieces of metal. This time, the artist extends reality into the figurative image by using fragments of metal that have been theoretically emanating from the old man's body These shards, rather than as free-floating agents, are bearers of images, possibly snippets of memory rushing towards the figure in the work. The old man seems to have been awaiting this encounter. Gesturing at the notion that we see our life in a flash when we die. On a clear day you can see eternity

Arturo Sanchez - (b.1980) - The Dark Room

    Est: ₱160,000 - ₱208,000

Arturo Sanchez (b.1980) The Dark Room 2012 mixed media The room is vast and voluminous but everything is“imploding”, for example, the bodies glow from within phosphorescent creatures in unfamiliar waters, at the same time that on a social plane they convey the sense of dehumanization and alienation. The work reminds us of the psychological victims of violence but disappointment and apathy are mixed with disgust, sadness and call for justice. Imbued with the knowledge of what was and what has become of victims of all kinds, Sanchez captures tension and images of emotions and sensations far from quiet and neutral. The dark and earth-tone hues dominant in the works say that while “dark days” and tension displace us visually and psychologically, these instances become tools for positive dissent. This disturbing work is a powerful study of inner conflict and emotional hostility. The figures, each darkly brooding, are thrust to the sides and separated by the prominent and somewhat mysterious subjects in the room. Yet, the steep perspective seems to pull them forcibly together, and suggests that they are trapped within an oppressively confined space. The tense, heavy atmosphere is further stressed by the strange glow from within the room. There is an emotional collaboration between exterior light and interior, and the flatness of the planes cum walls and floor makes them more melancholy.
