Ángeles Santos began in the genre of landscapes painting the cities of Paris, Barcelona, Cadaqués and Sitges through an aesthetic influenced by her reconciliation with the painter Emilio Grau. The sister of the poet and art critic Rafael Santos Torroella, she took up drawing and painting at the age of fourteen during her school years at the Esclavas Concepcionistas boarding school in Seville. Two years later he moved with his parents to Valladolid, where he was taught by the Italian painter Cellino Perotti and painted, at the age of 18, "Un mundo", a large-scale oil painting depicting a strange surrealist planet, now in the collection of the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía.After a couple of exhibitions in Valladolid, his participation in the IX Salón de Otoño in Madrid in 1929 increased his fame, resulting in the publication of articles about his painting (half expressionist, half surrealist) by intellectuals and critics such as Jorge Guillén, Ramón Gómez de la Serna, Manuel Abril, Juan Ramón Jiménez, Federico García Lorca, Guillermo Díaz-Plaja, Joan Teixidor, among others. In 1931 she held a solo exhibition in Paris and in 1932 she took part in the collective exhibition of Iberian Artists in San Sebastián, Copenhagen and the French capital. The following year she was invited to exhibit in the group show at the Carnegie Institute in Pittsburgh (USA) and in 1936 she was included in the Spanish pavilion at the Venice Biennale.

Size: 65 x 54 cm; 89 x 79 cm (frame). Sitges was a place that the artist visited frequently, in fact, from the 70s onwards, the number of visits multiplied. The peacefulness of the area, its atmosphere and the light of the place were a source of inspiration for Ángeles Santos, who portrayed numerous views of the place. In this particular case, she shows a table with an empty chair in the foreground, a large grove of trees in the background and finally a view of the city buildings. The delicacy of the light tones and the fluidity of the brushstrokes make up a scene that offers us a reverie of reality, where the author manages to combine the genre of landscape, still life and vedutism through a few elements. Measurements: 70 x 58 cm; 93 x 81 cm (frame). In 1935, Ángeles Santos met her future husband, the painter Emilio Grau, and it was from then on that her palette became lighter, leaving behind the dark and greyish tones. This work is situated in that moment of transition, and in fact, it can be seen that the background still retains the cold tones, while the main figure is portrayed in warmer tones. It should also be noted that, during this period, the artist also lengthened the canon of the figures, thus presenting more stylised and elegant forms, as can be seen in the conception of the figure of the young woman. The image is shown to the viewer in an apparently unfinished form, revealing the sketch lines in the lower part of the arms and the waist, while the face shows great detail and careful modelling based on delicate shadows and brushstrokes that structure the volume of the facial features, demonstrating the artistic quality of Ángeles Santos' work. ANGELES SANTOS TORROELLA (Portbou, 1911 - Madrid, 2013). "Cupboard with grapes and mimosa". Oil on canvas. Signed in the lower right corner. Signed and titled on the back. Size: 55 x 46 cm; 77 x 68 cm (frame). In this piece the author breaks with the classical dimensions in favour of the creation of a work with a contemporary aesthetic which dynamises such a classical theme as the still life. However, she does not abandon the laws of perspective in their entirety, as she introduces a spatial sensation by structuring the image with successive planes that give it depth. With a loose, rapid and very vaporous brushstroke, the author configures an aesthetic game that oscillates between tradition and novelty, a groundbreaking technique combined with a classical theme, where she shapes a still life on different levels of height, in the same way as the Baroque master Sánchez Cotán. The work of Angeles Santos Torroella can be divided into three stages corresponding to the three cities where he lived, Valladolid, Madrid and Barcelona. Measurements: 55 x 46 cm; 77 x 69 cm (frame). In this particular piece we do not observe a landscape, however, it does respond to the use of a loose brushstroke technique of post-impressionist aesthetics, where the pastel tones are imposed in the composition. In this case the author presents an interior scene dominated by the presence of a vase with flowers, thus rescuing a theme with a long tradition in the history of art such as flower painting, and creating a personal reinterpretation through a completely new aesthetic, heir to styles such as Fauvism and Impressionism. These were artistic currents that Santos knew and mastered thanks to her great technical quality, which defined her as one of the most relevant artists of the 20th century. Her ability to apprehend styles and configure her own images was a constant throughout her career, which was notable for the great evolution and constant learning process in the artist's life. Measurements: 92 x 73 cm; 122,5 x 103 cm (frame). With only twenty years old Ángeles Santos pronounced these words; "My work is only what women can do... it is to be close to realities while painting". Despite her Juventus, she had already achieved great recognition, being admired by the cultural elite of the time. With this phrase, Santos foretold an uncertain, difficult future, devoted entirely to painting. This work, which belongs to a mature period, is nothing more than a tribute to his profession, as it gives all the prominence to the painter's temple, "his studio". On the door we can see a sketched figure without identity, as the artist focuses her interest on the architecture, situated in a solitary landscape far from civilisation. A quiet and peaceful space. The work of Angeles Santos Torroella can be divided into three stages which correspond to the three cities where she lived, Valladolid, Madrid and Barcelona.
