            Mar. 15, 2023

            SARGENT JOHN SINGER: (1856-1925)

            Est: €200 - €300

SARGENT JOHN SINGER: (1856-1925) American artist, considered the leading portrait painter of his generation. A.L.S., John S. Sargent, two pages, 8vo, Les Chenes, Parame, Brittany, 2nd September n.y. (1883), to Monsieur Hubert, in French. If the raffle is for Sunday the 8th the sketch can still be used as a small prize, if it was Sunday yesterday please be so kind as to send it to me here. Another time I'll choose some background that's easier to reproduce…..for the benefit of appearing in your journal'). Some very light, extremely minor foxing, VG Sargent wrote the present letter from the Brittany chateau of the French banker and shipping magnate Pierre Gautreau and his wife Virginie Amelie Avegno Gautreau (1859-1915). The American-born socialite became one of Paris's conspicuous beauties and was introduced to Sargent by her lover, the art collector Samuel Jean Pozzi. The introduction led to Sargent being invited to Parame where the artist produced around thirty studies of Virginie in various mediums, however it was also to result in Sargent's famous oil painting Portrait of Madame X (1884). The work depicts Gautreau standing in a suggestively coquettish pose in a revealing costume which was considered indiscreet when Sargent entered it into the Paris Salon of 1884. The painting caused such a storm of outrage and became so scandalous that it ensured Sargent would receive no more portrait commissions in France and he moved permanently to London where he progressed to become one of history's most famous portrait painters.

            Est: €200 - €300

SARGENT JOHN SINGER: (1856-1925) American artist, considered the leading portrait painter of his generation. A.L.S., John S. Sargent, two pages, small 4to, n.p., n.d. ('Sunday'; 1918), to Philip [Sassoon]. Sargent thanks his correspondent for their letter and explains that he is leaving tomorrow, 'so the next rendezvous is London - I will listen for your aeroplane', further writing 'There has been a fearful question about my lapsed American passport, and yesterday it was thought I would have to go to Paris & get another one before being allowed to leave Boulogne. But the P.M. tells me the difficulty…..will be all right' and continuing 'God knows what will happen about Arras church and the other things I have done. I think the Ministry of Information considers everything their property….You have been awfully kind and providential to me out here - and I am ''yours till death''. Any time the Commander in Chief comes to England I will do the best for you. I hope I shall be seeing Sybil soon and singing your praises'. A few very light, extremely minor creases, VG Philip Sassoon (1888-1939) British politician, art collector and social host. Sargent painted Sassoon's portrait in 1923. Sargent was commissioned as a war artist by the British Ministry of Information in 1918 and his works at this time including various paintings from Arras, including the ruined cathedral.

Attributed To John Singer Sargent (1856 - 1925) "Flowers in a Glass" Watercolor on Paper Laid to Board. Signed on lower left. Includes tag on reverse from the Museum of Fine Arts Boston, MA. John Singer Sargent was an American expatriate artist, considered the "leading portrait painter of his generation" for his evocations of Edwardian-era luxury. He created roughly 900 oil paintings and more than 2,000 watercolors, as well as countless sketches and charcoal drawings. His oeuvre documents worldwide travel, from Venice to the Tyrol, Corfu, the Middle East, Montana, Maine, and Florida. He was born in Florence to American parents, and trained in Paris before moving to London, living most of his life in Europe. He enjoyed international acclaim as a portrait painter. An early submission to the Paris Salon in the 1880s, his Portrait of Madame X, was intended to consolidate his position as a society painter in Paris, but instead resulted in scandal. During the next year following the scandal, Sargent departed for England where he continued a successful career as a portrait artist. From the beginning, Sargent's work is characterized by remarkable technical facility, particularly in his ability to draw with a brush, which in later years inspired admiration as well as criticism for a supposed superficiality. His commissioned works were consistent with the grand manner of portraiture, while his informal studies and landscape paintings displayed a familiarity with Impressionism. In later life Sargent expressed ambivalence about the restrictions of formal portrait work, and devoted much of his energy to mural painting and working en plein air. Art historians generally ignored "society" artists such as Sargent until the late 20th century. Est: $10,000 - $20,000

John Singer Sargent, Portrait of Elisabeth Mills Reid, Charcoal on Paper. Signed and dated. Elizabeth Mills and John Singer Sargent were both confirmed at Holy Trinity 1874. As the two became more prominent in their respective fields the two united once again in the creation of this iconic charcoal. According to the Reid Hall archives the original 1912 charcoal portrait sketch of Elizabeth Mills Reid is yet to be found. Their image of the charcoal (a photograph) on their web site appears to be the exact same as we have here. Born in Florence, Italy to a New England doctor and wife, John Singer Sargent became a leading portrait and figure painter of subjects in international society during the Gilded Age. Late in his career, he was a leading proponent of watercolor as a respectable medium for finished work. His American parents lived in Europe most of their lives and followed the social season between the capital cities. Traveling continuously with his parents, he showed early art talent and was encouraged by his mother, an amateur painter. In Rome at age 12, he studied with Carl Welsch, a German-American artist and in 1870 at the Accademia di Belle Arti in Florence. In Paris, he was accepted in 1874 at the Ecole des Beaux Arts but switched to the less academically oriented atelier of Carolus Duran, who had major impact on Sargent's style. Elizabeth Mills Reid (the Subject) one of the leading female philanthropists of the early 20th century was the daughter of Darius Ogden Mills. Her father was one of the wealthiest men in America as the first bank west of the Rocky Mountains, the founder of the bank of California and his work in the California railroad. Their family legacy includes Mills Field (now San Francisco International Airport), Mills Peninsula Medical Center, Mills Building and Tower, the New York herald tribune and Reid Hall. Reid hall began as an American Girls Club in Paris encouraging artistic and academic opportunities for young American women. During World War I it was an American Red Cross and then became an academy for women’s studies with the help of Columbia’s President Lee Bollinger. Her lasting legacy will be the hospitals, which she not only financially supported, but her time and dedication she took with the staff creating standards above any other in the industry. Her commitment to the red cross and the aid she provided throughout the wars. Her support for women’s ambitions, creativity, and academic possibilities through support groups, fundraising events, and women’s studies. Reid Hall in Paris was bequeathed to Columbia University in 1964. Overall size: 19 1/4 x 15 1/4 in. Sight size: 9 3/4 x 7 1/2 in.
