Who is John Singer Sargent?
John Singer Sargent was a prolific artist active in the late 19th and early 20th century. John Singer Sargent's paintings are noteworthy for their range of styles. Part of the reason for his wide-ranging talent was his exposure to many cultures and mentors. Born in 1856 to American parents living in Florence, Italy, he studied under tutors in Europe and the UK.

Sargent circulated in the highest strata of European social society for 40 years, producing hundreds of portraits for the social elite. Sargent's portraits are notable for capturing the glamor and elegant bearing of his subjects in a bold and lifelike style. Later in life, John Singer Sargent's paintings included murals and landscapes in both oil and watercolor. John Singer Sargent drawings are renowned for bold strokes capturing life and movement. Many collections worldwide feature his and other portrait paintings for sale.

Auction Date: Oct 20, 2021

Estimate: $300 - $500

Description: John Singer Sargent: Carnation, Lily, Lily, Rose. Open edition fine art print, published by The Tate Gallery, London. Printed in Great Britan by the Hillingdon Press, Uxbridge, Middlesex, 1977. Unsigned, unnumbered, and unframed.
Sargent's Impressionist painting depicts girls lighting Japanese lanterns in a rose and lily filled garden and was painted in the Cotswolds. The inspiration came during a boating expedition Sargent took on the Thames at Pangbourne. Polly and Dorothy (Dolly) Barnard, the daughters of the illustrator Frederick Barnard were the models, because they had the exact hair colour Sargent was seeking. Dolly, aged eleven, is on the left; Polly, aged seven, is on the right.

John Singer Sargent (American, 1856-1925). Recognized as the leading portraitist in England and the United States at the turn of the century, John Singer Sargent was acclaimed for his elegant and very stylish depictions of high society. Known for his technical precocity, he shunned traditional academic precepts in favor of a modern approach towards technique, color and form, thereby making his own special contribution to the history of grand manner portraiture.

This marvelously fresh and spirited watercolor of Santa Maria della Salute, Venice by John Singer Sargent is an exciting new addition to the artist's dozen known works recording the façade of the majestic Baroque church located at the entrance to the city's Grand Canal.

More than any other structure in Venice, Santa Maria della Salute, with its signature soaring dome capping a rotunda resting on an octagonal base, fired Sargent's imagination. He lived fairly close to it at the Palazzo Barbaro when he was in Venice, and painted it repeatedly. While he did produce views of the church as a whole, as did countless artists before and after him, Sargent was highly unusual in focusing most of his artistic attention on the entrance façade in both oil and watercolor. Richard Ormond has thoughtfully considered Sargent's curious "obsessive concentration" on this single motif, and written elegantly about it: "Like a triumphal arch, the entrance façade, with soaring columns and sculpted ornament, is common to all the studies, but is cropped below the pediment. In all of these depictions, included to the left or right is one or two of the two lateral chapel faces, hinged at 45 degrees to the entrance façade. The entrance and the side chapels project from the perimeter wall, and it is the angulation between them that clearly excited Sargent. The wide, ceremonial staircase leading up to the church provides and introduction and a horizontal foil to the grandeur above. Out of the inventory of steps, facades, columns, and sculpture, Sargent fashioned a pictorial language of his own. He used mass and void, light and shadow, and vertical and horizontal to create forms that work both on the surface of the painting as well as within the confines of the picture space." (Richard Ormond, "Down the Grand Canal 1900-1913," in Sargent's Venice, Yale University Press, New Haven and London, 2006, p. 96)

The present work is important to Sargent's series of Salute paintings because it is one of the rare dated sheets. Dated 1904, it thus becomes one of the earliest works in the series, and possibly a new touchstone for dating the rest of the group. In terms of its vantage point on the motif of the façade and the overall composition, this watercolor is closest to the larger version in the Museum of Fine Arts Boston (The Hayden Collection-Charles Henry Hayden Fund, 12.200), which measures 15 12/16 x 20 15/16 inches and is currently dated to circa 1909. ( Sargent's Venice, 2006, illustrated p. 98, caption p. 99) In comparing the two sheets, the present work is more highly keyed in coloration, with noticeably more vivid blues in the double door, sculptural ornament and shadows than the Boston sheet which has shadows tending towards purple. In general, the structure in the present work appears more evenly illuminated with fewer shadows, suggesting it was painted at a different time of day and during different weather conditions. Sargent routinely painted from gondolas on the water, which may account for the sharp, low vantage point on the Salute in this and the related works.

On the reverse of this watercolor, Sargent inscribed it to his friend Arthur Boylston Nichols, a Harvard-educated Bostonian who had established himself as a successful interior decora

Description: Attributed John Singer Sargent (1856 - 1925). Charcoal on Paper.Measure 19 1/2"in H x 15 1/2"in W and 27"in H x 23"in W with frame. Born in Florence, Italy to a New England doctor and wife, John Singer Sargent became a leading portrait and figure painter of subjects in international society during the Gilded Age. Late in his career, he was a leading proponent of watercolor as a respectable medium for finished work. His American parents lived in Europe most of their lives and followed the social season between the capital cities. Traveling continuously with his parents, he showed early art talent and was encouraged by his mother, an amateur painter. In Rome at age 12, he studied with Carl Welsch, a German-American artist and in 1870 at the Accademia di Belle Arti in Florence. In Paris, he was accepted in 1874 at the Ecole des Beaux Arts but switched to the less academically oriented atelier of Carolus Duran, who had major impact on Sargent's style. Duran was an adventurous portrait painter who blended realism with a certain freedom of style.Sargent was also affected by portrait style of Velasquez, the Tonalism or mood painting of James Whistler, and Impressionism of Edgar Degas. He spent time at Monet's home town of Giverny, absorbing Impressionist techniques there.Sargent's career ended in Paris with his painting "Portrait of Mme X," 1884, because it was a startlingly accurate portrayal of a notoriously beautiful woman who was Sargent's cousin. Some said the pose was provocative, but aside from the reputation of the subject, there seems little reason from a late 20th century perspective to find the work controversial. From 1885 until 1925, Sargent lived primarily in London where his career as a portrait painter was highly successful, but he traveled frequently to the United States where he also had many portrait commissions, especially from upper class Bostonians. However by 1908, he was expressing much tiredness with the demands on his talents and the need to flatter his subjects. He began to limit himself to charcoal portrait sketches and also painted murals. In the early 1890s, he began a twenty-five year mural project for the Boston Public Library and painted murals at the Widener Library. In July 1918, he became a part of the War Artists Memorial Committee of the British Ministry of Information and went to France, in the vicinity of Bavincourt, at age 62 to record battle scenes and military figures. Working in both oil and charcoal, it was written about him that he "accepted his surroundings completely and went about his work as though quite accustomed to military life." One of his associates wrote that he "came to wonder if Sargent had any idea how dangerous an exploding shell might be, for he never showed the least sign of fear." (Mount 293).His last years he devoted to Impressionist watercolors of European scenes and architecture. He found watercolor to be the most pleasureable outlet for his tremendous energy and compulsions to sketch what he saw around him. He was a man who lived for his work and aside from general socializing had had little private life beyond his family. He never married although "he had at times adored certain women, momentarialy finding in them a reflected image of what he sought" (Mount 323)....

SARGENT JOHN SINGER: (1856-1925)

Lot 479: SARGENT JOHN SINGER: (1856-1925)

Auction Date: Jul 23, 2020

Estimate: €300 - €400

Description: SARGENT JOHN SINGER: (1856-1925) American Painter. A.L.S., John S Sargent, two pages, 8vo, Tite Street, Chelsea, 17th October n.y., to Mrs. [Jeanette Leonard?] Gilder. Sargent announces 'You will see from the enclosed note (no longer present) that there is nothing to be hoped for from Miss. Octavia Hill to whom I wrote on getting your letter' remarking 'I regret her refusal extremely' and further continuing 'As for your very flattering suggestion that I should write a paper on portrait painting, I am altogether lacking in the literary artistry'. A couple of small stains to the upper and lower edges of each page, not affecting the text or signature, otherwise VG Octavia Hill (1838-1912) English Social Reformer. Sargent had painted Hill's portrait in 1898. When presented with the portrait by her co-workers Hill made a speech in which she declared 'When I am gone, I hope my friends will not try to carry out any special system, or to follow blindly in the track which I have trodden. New circumstances require various efforts, and it is the spirit, not the dead form, that should be perpetuated. ... We shall leave them a few houses, purified and improved, a few new and better ones built, a certain amount of thoughtful and loving management, a few open spaces…' and that, more important would be the quick eye to see, the true soul to measure, the large hope to grasp the mighty issues of the new and better days to come - greater ideals, greater hope, and patience to realise both'. It seems likely that Sargent's correspondent was Jeanette Leonard Gilder (1849-1916) American Author, Journalist, Critic & Editor who opposed women's rights to vote, arguing that women were not strong enough to participate in politics....
