ANTONIO SAURA (Huesca, 1930–Cuenca, 1998). “Untitled.” From the series “Four Masks for Four Self-Portraits.” Black silkscreen print on paper, print no. 34/80. Signed and numbered in pencil. Stamp from Kunstwerk Paris-Cuenca. Link Art Company label on the reverse. Measurements: 61 × 44 cm (paper); 85 × 65 cm (frame) The work belongs to Antonio Saura’s series “Four Masks for Four Self-Portraits,” published in 1981. The face appears split and distorted through nervous drawing, ink stains, and spontaneous strokes, becoming a superimposition of masks rather than a conventional physiognomic representation. The expressive treatment of the figure ties in with Spanish Informalism and with the artistic explorations Saura has pursued since his involvement with the El Paso group. The chromatic reduction to black and the natural tone of the paper intensifies the tension of the gesture, while the fragmentation of the face reflects his constant interest in identity, monstrosity, and the tradition of Spanish portraiture. Antonio Saura was a key figure in Spanish Informalism and a founding member of the El Paso group. His work is held in institutions such as the Reina Sofía Museum, the Guggenheim Bilbao, and the Centre Pompidou, which houses numerous paintings and drawings by the artist.

ANTONIO SAURA (Huesca, 1930 - Cuenca, 1998). "Pac", 1996. Acrylic, ink and graphite on paper. Signed and dated. Provenance: -Galería Boisserée, Cologne -Galería Benlliure, Valencia (acquired from the previous one in 2006). Work exhibited in Valencia, Benlliure Gallery, XIX Benlliure Exhibition, November 2006. Measurements: 41 × 31,1 cm.; 68 × 58 cm. with frame. "Pac" participates in Saura's most characteristic universe: fragmented figures, bodies in tension, mask-faces and a critical look at human identity. The large central black form functions as the bodily axis of the composition, while around it, faces, limbs and signs of nervous outline unfold, as if the image were in full metamorphosis. The main figure, with an unhinged face and theatrical character, seems to hold a small figure or dummy in his left hand, which reinforces a suggestive reading of ventriloquism. The work thus oscillates between the comic and the disturbing, between the animated and the mechanical, introducing an idea of splitting, masks and manipulation very similar to Saura's usual psychological tension. The chromatic economy concentrates the attention on the line, the gesture and the expressive deformation. Made in 1996, it belongs to the artist's final stage, when his language had been refined until it became an immediate, incisive and fully recognizable visual writing. Because of its date, technique and iconic force, it is a particularly attractive work within his production on paper. Antonio Saura, self-taught, began his career in Madrid and soon developed an experimental language linked to surrealism. In 1957 he founded the El Paso group, participated in the 1958 Venice Biennial together with Chillida and Tàpies, and in 1960 received the Guggenheim Prize in New York. His career was recognized with numerous international exhibitions, the Grand Prize at the Lugano Biennial of Engraving, the appointment as Knight of the Order of Arts and Letters of France and the Gold Medal of Fine Arts. His work is represented in institutions such as the Reina Sofia Museum, the Centre Pompidou, the Tate, the Guggenheim in New York and Bilbao, the Metropolitan Museum and the Neue Nationalgalerie in Berlin.

NOTICE Spanish painter and writer Antonio Saura was born in Huesca in 1930 and died in Cuenca in 1998. Self-taught during a long illness, he began painting around 1947. Initially close to Surrealism and Automatism during his Parisian sojourns, he turned to lyrical, gestural abstraction, with dark matter, in the Informal Art movement championed by critic Michel Tapié. In 1957, he was one of the founders, in Madrid, of the avant-garde group El Paso, alongside Manolo Millares, Luis Feito and Rafael Canogar, which introduced informal art to Spain in the context of Francoism - a revival to which his elder brother Antoni Tàpies was also attached. His convulsive figures - crowds, crucifixions, imaginary black-and-white portraits - are among the powerful images of twentieth-century Spanish art. Brother of filmmaker Carlos Saura, he is represented in numerous museums, from Madrid's Reina Sofía to major international collections.

ANTONIO SAURA (Huesca, 1930 - Cuenca, 1998). "The Quixote", 1990. Silkscreen on BFK Rives France paper. Copy 14/100. Rust stains. Signed and justified in pencil. Measurements: 76 x 56,5 cm. This work by Antonio Saura dedicated to Don Quixote and Sancho Panza, was conceived for the special edition of Don Quixote de la Mancha published by Círculo de Lectores on the occasion of its 25th anniversary. Far from a narrative or descriptive illustration in the traditional sense, Saura turns Miguel de Cervantes' famous characters into almost ghostly apparitions, charged with expressive tension and existential drama. The work fully reflects the plastic language that defined the career of Antonio Saura, one of the great representatives of informalism and the new Spanish post-war figuration. His violent, gestural and fragmented line decomposes the figures to the point of placing them on the limit between recognition and abstraction. Don Quixote and Sancho do not appear as idealized heroes or picturesque characters; they emerge rather as universal symbols of the human condition, constructed by means of black spots, nervous lines and radical hallmarks that transmit movement, fragility and inner energy. The choice of Saura for this commemorative edition was not accidental. Throughout his career, the artist maintained a constant dialogue with great figures of Spanish culture, Goya, Velázquez, Picasso or Cervantes, understood not as academic models, but as living presences capable of being reinterpreted from a contemporary sensibility.

ANTONIO SAURA (Huesca, 1930 - Cuenca, 1998). "Triptych Amsterdam", 1975. Silkscreen on white cardboard Bristol, copy 129/190. Signed and justified by hand. Catalog raisonné: Weber Caflisch 215. Measurements: 75 x 104 cm. Self-taught, Antonio Saura began to paint and write in Madrid in 1947. In 1952 he makes his first exhibition in Madrid, in the Buchholz bookstore, where he exhibits his youthful, dreamlike and surrealistic works. That same year he visited Paris for the first time, settling in the city. There his work was influenced by artists such as Miró and Man Ray, and he dedicated himself to making paintings on canvas and paper of an organic nature, using various techniques. The break with the surrealist group allows him to open up to other ways of creation, where he begins to show the evolution that his work is undergoing, which moves towards an instantaneous painting of gestural strokes and reduced palette of selective character, where informalism plays the absent-mindedness between suggestive expressions of line and color. He made his debut in Paris in 1957, at the Stadler Gallery, the same year he founded the El Paso group. The following year he participates in the Venice Biennale in the company of Chillida and Tàpies, and in 1960 he receives the Guggenheim Prize in New York. In 1963 the first retrospectives are dedicated to him, in the Stedelijk Museum of Eindhoven, the Rotterdamsche Kunstring and in the museums of Buenos Aires and Rio de Janeiro (works on paper). Saura's retrospective exhibitions are repeated throughout his career, both in Spain and in Europe and America. In 1966 he exhibited at the Institute of Contemporary Arts in London, and participated in the Biennial of Engraving "Bianco e Nero" in Lugano, winning the Grand Prize. In 1979 he was awarded a prize at the First Biennial of Engraving in Heidelberg, in 1981 he was named Knight of the Order of Arts and Letters in France, and the following year he was awarded the Gold Medal of Fine Arts. He has exhibited all over the world and is represented in the most important national and international contemporary art museums, including the Neue Nationalgalierie in Berlin, the Guggenheim in Bilbao, the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía, the Albright-Knox Art Gallery in Buffalo, the Guggenheim and the Metropolitan in New York, the Centre Georges Pompidou in Paris and the Tate Gallery in London.

ANTONIO SAURA (Huesca, 1930 - Cuenca, 1998). "Crucifixion". 1959-60. Gouache and ink on paper. Signed and dated. Attached certificate of the Fondation Archives Antonio Saura. Measurements: 61 x 89 cm. Work on paper by Antonio Saura belonging to his emblematic series of Crucifixions, one of the most intense and recognizable cycles of his production. Begun at the end of the fifties, this theme constitutes one of the great axes of his plastic language and one of his most powerful contributions to the renovation of contemporary Spanish iconography. Far from a traditional devotional representation, Saura transforms the image of the Crucified into a field of gestural tension. The figure emerges between black spots, violent whites and areas of naked paper, articulating a composition of strong dramatic charge. The work is linked to the Spanish tradition of the Crucified -from Velázquez to Goya-, but taken to the territory of informalism, pictorial action and the expressive decomposition of the figure. The 1959-60 dating places the piece at a particularly significant moment, coinciding with some of his greatest works on this theme. The MoMA holds a 1960 Crucifixion done in collage and ink on black paper, while the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao has a Crucifixion dated between 1959 and 1963, references that underline the relevance of this motif in his early mature work. Its large format for a work on paper, its compositional power and the presence of the certificate of the Fondation Archives Antonio Saura reinforce its interest for specialized collectors. Art Measure: 20w x 30h Frame Measure: 28.5w x 36.5h In good condition with wear commensurate with age. From the estate collection of Alexander Goykhman. A powerful and unrelenting composition unfolds through a stark interplay of black, white, and muted tonal accents, embodying the raw intensity and psychological depth synonymous with Antonio Saura’s expressionist vision. The work is dominated by elongated, distorted figures rendered with aggressive, gestural brushwork, their skeletal forms stretched and contorted across a dark, immersive ground. The central figure rises vertically with exaggerated limbs and a gaunt, almost spectral presence, its open mouth and fractured features conveying a sense of anguish and visceral tension. Adjacent, a secondary form emerges with similarly disjointed anatomy, its face reduced to a mask-like configuration of jagged lines and hollowed shapes. The figures appear suspended in a void, their presence heightened by the stark contrast between the luminous whites and the dense, surrounding black. Saura’s handling of paint is immediate and forceful, with rapid, expressive strokes that carve out form while simultaneously dissolving it. The composition resists stability, instead embracing fragmentation and emotional urgency, reflecting the artist’s exploration of the human condition through distortion and abstraction. Subtle inflections of earthy tones punctuate the otherwise monochromatic surface, adding depth without diminishing the overall austerity. The artist’s signature is present within the composition, reinforcing its alignment with Saura’s unmistakable aesthetic. The work stands as a compelling example of postwar European expressionism, where figuration is pushed to the edge of abstraction in pursuit of psychological truth. Antonio Saura was a leading figure in Spanish postwar art and a founding member of the influential El Paso group. His work is characterized by its intense, often unsettling reinterpretation of the human form, drawing on influences from Goya, Velázquez, and Picasso while forging a deeply personal and modern expressionist language. Antonio Saura (1930–1998) was a prominent Spanish painter and writer, leading the post-war Informalism movement in Spain. Self-taught during a five-year bedridden illness, he created expressive, often grotesque, monochromatic gestural paintings. Key themes included crucifixions, imaginary portraits, and female bodies, heavily influenced by Goya and Spanish art
