Salt Lake City, UT: ca 1870s. 6 1/4 x 3 3/4 in. stereoview on cardstock mount (light toning and spotting, with wear to edges and corners). Verso bears applied paper label featuring photographer's information, image title, and series title, "Views of the Great West from the Missouri River to the Pacific Ocean / Utah Series." "Shebit Nation" here refers to the Shivwit band of Southern Paiutes. Featured at the center of the image is Daniel McArthur, President of the St. George Stake of the Mormon Church in Utah, standing up to his knees in a pool of water with an unidentified male Paiute subject. Numerous other Paiute subjects watch from the hillside above. Sheriff Augustus P. Hardy stands on a small ledge to the right, with his hand on his lapel. Source: Alfred L. Savage, n.d.   9 7/8 x 8 in. albumen photograph on cardstock mount (light stain, some toning). Photographer's imprint to mount recto. Period ink inscription provides title. An outdoor view picturing the S.S. General Garfield at dock on the Great Salt Lake. The General Garfield was a triple-decked steam-powered stern-wheeler with twin steam stacks was built in 1871. Here is she moored on the lake near a large three-story building and a parked train with several passenger cars. Beyond the train is an open carriage with several figures hitched to horses. A man tentatively identified as Savage's assistant lounges among the rocks in the foreground. The photographer effectively captures several modes of transportation as well as the majesty of the Lake and the mountains beyond.

          Cathedral Spires, Yosemite Valley, California. Circa 1880. Albumen print. 29 x 25 cm. Title and photographer's name in the negative in lower edge, mounted to original board; store label on the verso. As a photographer under contract with the Union Pacific Railroad, Charles R. Savage traveled to California in 1866 and then followed the rails back to Utah. He photographed the linking of the Union Pacific and Central Pacific on Promontory Summit, at Promontory, Utah in 1869, joining two other famous photographers, Andrew J. Russell and Alfred A. Hart, in documenting this historic event. Savage also photographed scenic areas of the west including Yellowstone National Park, Zion National Park, and created many images documenting the growth of Utah towns and cities. Most of Savage's archived photographs, produced by several different early photographic methods, were lost in 1883 in a disastrous studio fire. – A few surface scuff marks (some retouched), otherwise a strong print in very good condition.

          'Dale Creek Iron Viaduct, Promontory, Utah' 1869. Albumen print. 23 x 28,4 cm. Title and photographer's name in the negative in lower right coner, mounted to board (slight traces of use). As a photographer under contract with the Union Pacific Railroad, Charles R. Savage traveled to California in 1866 and then followed the rails back to Utah. He photographed the linking of the Union Pacific and Central Pacific on Promontory Summit, at Promontory, Utah in 1869. He joined two other famous photographers, Andrew J. Russell and Alfred A. Hart, in documenting this historic event and this series is considered his most famous work. Savage also photographed scenic areas of the west including Yellowstone National Park, Zion National Park, and created many images documenting the growth of Utah towns and cities. He also traveled extensively over western North America, taking pictures in areas of Canada and Mexico, and in areas from the Pacific Ocean to Nebraska in the mid-west. Most of Savage's archived photographs, produced by several different early photographic methods, were lost in 1883 in a disastrous studio fire. - Slightly solied and small tear in upper edge, otherwise in very good condition.
