CARLO SCARPA - CLETO MUNARI Important "Lotus Leaf" Sterling Silver Flatware Service, Designed by Carlo Scarpa for Cleto Munari, from the Family of the Artist

    Est: €30,000 - €35,000

Extraordinary silver flatware service designed in 1977 by the architect Carlo Scarpa for Cleto Munari, representing one of the most celebrated collaborations between the renowned Venetian master and the Vicenza-based entrepreneur who, from the mid-1970s onwards, commissioned some of the most distinguished architects and designers of the twentieth century to create functional objects elevated to the status of true works of design.Universally known as the "Lotus Leaf" pattern, this model is regarded as one of Scarpa's most iconic creations in the field of tableware design. The design was inspired by nature: the soft, gently concave contours of the handles evoke the essential silhouette of a lotus leaf, reinterpreted through the architect's rigorous yet poetic design language. The exceptional sculptural quality of the flatware results from a perfect balance between functionality, ergonomics, and formal research, qualities that characterize Scarpa's entire body of work. Each piece is conceived as a small sculpture, defined by continuous flowing surfaces devoid of superfluous ornament, in which aesthetic value and functional purpose achieve complete harmony. The model remains in production by Cleto Munari Design Associati, a testament to its enduring significance in the history of contemporary Italian design. The service comprises 84 pieces of table flatware, arranged as twelve complete place settings, consisting of:12 dinner knives12 fruit knives12 tablespoons24 dinner forks12 fruit forks12 dessert spoonsIn addition, the lot includes:6 coffee spoonsEach place setting is preserved in its original Lenci cloth roll, complete with its original Cleto Munari presentation box.The flatware is crafted in sterling silver (925/1000 fineness) and is engraved "Scarpa per Cleto Munari", bearing the official Italian sterling silver hallmarks, including the maker's registration mark 268 VI.

Murano Sommerso Art Glass Bowl Attributed to Carlo Scarpa (1906-1978)

    Est: $250 - $500

Murano Sommerso Art Glass Bowl Attributed to Carlo Scarpa (1906-1978) for Venini, Italy. Midcentury grapefruit pink body with countless uncontrolled bubbles, and a straight rim with a small, straight, clear base. Size: 6 x 6 x 6 in.  Italian architect and designer Carlo Scarpa (1906-1978) translated his deep appreciation for regionalism, history, and craftsmanship into highly celebrated glass, furniture, and architectural creations. Though he graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts in Venice, his refusal to take the government’s licensing exam meant he was barred from using the professional title “Architetto” and was instead referred to as “Professore.” Much of his early design career was spent in Murano collaborating with legendary glassmakers MVM Cappellin and Venini, where his minimalist, tradition-honoring techniques culminated in historic vessels that now command hundreds of thousands of dollars at auction. He eventually entered the industrial design sphere in the 1960s, serving as president of the Gavina company and producing iconic furniture pieces like the Doge table and Cornaro sofa. While he spent decades teaching drawing and interior decoration in Venice, Scarpa also executed ambitious global architectural and landscape commissions that were heavily influenced by Venetian and Japanese cultures. Following his tragic death from a fall down a concrete staircase in Sendai, Japan, he was buried wrapped in linen sheets like a medieval knight within the walls of his own masterful Brion Tomb design.

The fluid, organic silhouette features a thick frame crafted from hand-blown art glass in a striking slate-blue hue, beautifully detailed with internal white cane striping. A signature heavy, ribbed brass bracket clamps onto the bottom center, providing a bold architectural contrast. Bearing the etched maker signature,"Venini Murano, Made in Italy," this piece showcases Scarpa's revolutionary impact on 20th-century Italian design.
