ART SIZE: 16 x 14 inches / 40 x 35 cm BOARD SIZE: 20 x 16 inches / 50 x 40 cm SIGNATURE: lower right NOTE: Flying celebrated its golden age between the two World Wars. Hordes of enthusiastic amateurs entered government sponsored competitions, creating excitement for their barnstorming antics. During this period, Wiley Post, himself a young barnstormer, became determined to fly around the world. On June 23, 1931, Post and his navigator, Harold Gatty, left New York's Roosevelt Field in the Winnie Mae. This Lockheed Vega, powered by a 550 horsepower, supercharged Wasp engine, soared into the sky. The flight went smoothly through England, Germany and along the Trans-Siberian route to the USSR. Here, in the muddy airfield of Blagovyeschensk, the Winnie Mae bogged down. After wasting fourteen hours grappling with the plane, Post and Gatty were finally rescued by a detachment of American soldiers with a tractor. Dirty, but not damaged, the Winnie Mae once again soared through the sky. In Khabarovsk, USSR, the Winnie Mae was grounded for several hours while mechanics inspected the engine. Luckily, the Winnie Mae was in perfect running order, and the around-the-world flight continued. After eight days, fifteen hours and fifty-one minutes, Post landed his plane back at Roosevelt Field, establishing a new long-distance flying record that stimulated aeronautics throughout the world. (66.04 cm x 78.74 cm) Description: Kicking up dust as they round a sharp corner of some rocks and small shrubs, the two cowboys on horseback race one another as a casual pastime to take a break from their difficult work out in the wilderness and fields of the American West. Rendered in careful detail, the sheen of the horses' coats are clearly visible, as are the whites of their eyes as they rush across the dirt path. Wearing fleece and fur jackets, the two cowboys appear to be dressed well for the cold landscape around them, evident from the ice-bitten limbs of plants and trees in the forest from which they have came.

This painting is the original which was published on the Fleetwood First Day Cover for the U.S. 21c Octave Chanute Air Mail stamp issued March 29, 1979. Though flight was considered folly by the common man since time began, by 1893, it was considered a feasible endeavor by scientists. At that time, a spirit of cooperation among aeronautical researchers gave rise to remarkable scientific advances, both theoretical and practical. This attitude of free exchange and cooperation, pervading both Europe and the United States, was largely the work of one man, Octave Chanute. It was Chanute who schooled aviation students on the experiments and inventions of their predecessors and on the theory of flight in general. He helped them build on what was already known about man's search for flight and encouraged them to further expand man's knowledge of aeronautics. His assistance was greatly welcomed, for Chanute was a reputable scientist, a renowned civil engineer of penetrating ability. His innovative attitudes and profound scope led him to be known as the leader in a new age of aeronautical development. With a kangaroo walk; a nasal out-the-corner-of-his-mouth talk; a giggle, grimace, and a wagging finger, "George M." won the hearts of American theater-goers from coast to coast. Hordes of enthusiastic amateurs entered government sponsored competitions, creating excitement for their barnstorming antics. During this period, Wiley Post, himself a young barnstormer, became determined to fly around the world. On June 23, 1931, Post and his navigator, Harold Gatty, left New York's Roosevelt Field in the Winnie Mae. This Lockheed Vega, powered by a 550 horsepower, supercharged Wasp engine, soared into the sky. The flight went smoothly through England, Germany and along the Trans-Siberian route to the USSR. Here, in the muddy airfield of Blagovyeschensk, the Winnie Mae bogged down. After wasting fourteen hours grappling with the plane, Post and Gatty were finally rescued by a detachment of American soldiers with a tractor. Dirty, but not damaged, the Winnie Mae once again soared through the sky. In Khabarovsk, USSR, the Winnie Mae was grounded for several hours while mechanics inspected the engine. Luckily, the Winnie Mae was in perfect running order, and the around-the-world flight continued. After eight days, fifteen hours and fifty-one minutes, Post landed his plane back at Roosevelt Field, establishing a new long-distance flying record that stimulated aeronautics throughout the world. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. Known as the "Father of American Musical Comedy" George M. Cohan was born on July 3, 1878, in Providence, Rhode Island, and grew up in a show-biz family. His parents were traveling vaudevillians and when George and his sister Josephine joined the act, the family became known as "The Four Cohans." By age 13, he was writing songs and lyrics for the act. Cohan soon became the starring actor and was also selling original songs to other vaudeville performers. By the age of 20, he was managing the family's business and had complete control of the act. He later turned his attention to Broadway and composed his first musical in 1902 called The Governor's Son. He formed a partnership with Sam Harris and their show Little Johnny Jones opened on Broadway and became a huge hit featuring Cohan's popular songs The Yankee Doodle Boy and Give My Regards to Broadway. But perhaps his most memorable contribution to musical theater was his 1906 hit show, George Washington, Jr. Audiences thrilled to spectacular patriotic musical numbers, and cheered as Cohan marched up and down the stage carrying the American flag while singing You're a Grand Old Flag. Not even man's long list of haunting mishaps in the air discouraged Octave Chanute from investigating the possibility of flight. He was certain that careful, scientific scrutiny of past experiments would open the skies to man. Repeatedly, Chanute urged his colleagues that flight hinged on the perfection of a machine capable of propelling and sustaining itself. He felt certain that these qualities could be achieved through the use of wings and an air screw driven by a gasoline engine. In 1891, he published an article entitled "Progress in Flying Machines" that exerted a profound influence on the aeronautical world. In this article, he described past aeronautical failures and attempted to explain why these flying machines had failed. Chanute's belief that man should continually build on his predecessors' knowledge contributed to productive aeronautical research. Seeking to further advance the study of flight, Chanute established a glider camp on the sand dunes of Lake Michigan. There, he and his associates conducted some 2,000 glider experiments. Incredibly, all of these were executed without accident. In the spring of 1900, Octave Chanute received a letter from Wilbur Wright requesting information on an aeronautical problem. This letter marked the beginning of a long friendship. And, on December 17, 1903, Chanute's dream of flight came true when the Wright Brothers achieved man's first powered flight.
