Diana im Bade - "Lebendes Bild" auf dem Künstlerball, Berlin 1843. Bleistift und Rötel auf Velin. 17,7 x 21,4 cm. Am Unterrand in Bleistift bez. "1843 Zeichnung zu den lebenden Bildern zum Künstlerball in der kgl. Akademie zu Berlin Unter den Linden 1843 Diana und ihre Nymphen" sowie unten rechts "G Sch". Die Arbeit wurde als Vorzeichnung verwendet zu einem der zehn Zinkdrucke in Schadows Heft "Bericht über die Vorstelllung lebender Bilder, welche im Saale der königlichen Akademie der Künste zu Berlin am 5ten Mai 1843" stattfand, zu dem der Künstler im darauffolgenden Monat Text und Abbildungen zusammenstellte. Insgesamt 36 Bilder wurden bei zwei Veranstaltungen nachgestellt. Die vorliegende Komposition stellt die Gruppe der Diana mit ihren Nymphen auf dem Bild "Das Bad der Diana" von Karl Ferdinand Sohn nach. Schadow schreibt zu diesem Bild "Die letzte Vorstellung, No. 36, Diana im Bade, nach einem Gemälde des Malers G. Sohn in Düsseldorf. Die Göttin erblickt den unbesonnenen Akteon und befiehlt seine Strafe. Bei der Schönheit dieser Gruppe lieferte sie doch nur wenig vortheilhafte Momente, weshalb nur die eine Ansicht in Umriß beigeht". Eine weitere Zeichnung Schadows nach einem der lebenden Bilder mit der Darstellung der drei Grazien bewahrt das Stadtmuseum Berlin (s. Sibylle Badstübner-Gröger, Claudia Czok, Jutta von Simson: Johann Gottfried Schadow. Die Zeichnungen, Berlin 2006, Katalog II, S. 759, Nr. 2006 mit Abb.). Schadow, Johann Gottfried. Büste der Friederike, Herzogin zu Mecklenburg aus der "Prinzessinnengruppe". Skulptur im Steingussverfahren. Höhe ca. 52 cm. Breite ca. 35 cm. Tiefe ca. 26 cm. Gewicht ca. 50 kg. England 20. Jahrhundert. Die aus der sogenannten "Prinzessinnengruppe" herausgelöste Büste der Friederike von Preußen (1778-1841), der jüngeren Schwester, der Kronprinzessin Luise, die später mit ihrem Gemahl Friedrich Wilhelms III. den Thron der Hohenzollern besteigen sollte. Friederike heiratete Herzog Leopold IV. von Anhalt-Dessau, was ihr den Titel der Herzogin eintrug. Nachdem der bedeutende klassizistische Bildhauer Johann Gottfried Schadow (1764-1850) die Büsten der beiden Prinzessinnen erst einzeln modelliert hatte - Friederike war zu dieser Zeit gerade etwa 16 Jahre alt, schuf er zunächst ein Gipsmodell der Gruppe, bevor er sich zwischen 1795 und 1797 an die Ausfertigung als Marmorskulptur machten, die heute in der Alten Nationalgalerie in Berlin ausgestellt wird. Die hier in sehr feiner Manier aus schwerem, tonigen Steinguss hergestellte Büste Friederikes gehört zu den wenigen Exemplaren, die in dieser Form nachweisbar bzw. noch erhältlich sind. Sie unterscheidet sich deutlich in Qualität und Massivität von zahlreichen Gipsnachbildungen, wurde hier möglicherweise in wenigen Einzelstücken in einer englischen Steinguss-Werkstatt hergestellt. – Wenige Einschlüsse, Witterungsspuren, unwesentliche Fugrisse oder Oberflächenverfärbungen, insgesamt von sehr guter Gesamterhaltung.

Sitzende junge Frau mit Strickzeug. Schwarze Kreide auf Velin. 18,9 x 16 cm. Um 1794. Die Darstellung der strickenden jungen Frau, die sich in die gerundete Ecke des Sofas schmiegt, erinnert an die Gestalt von Schadows jüngster Schwester Charlotte Schadow in der Zeichnung "Kaffee-Visite", die 1794 datiert ist (Berlin, Akademie der Bildenden Künste, Badstübner/Czok/von Simson Nr. 350). Johann Gottfried Schadow (Berlin 1764-1850), Satirical Etching on paper, titled, "Foye de la grande nation" (a Napoleon caricature, "Home of the Grand Nation") c1813-15, Published by Gilrai, Paris. Unsigned. In black wood frame, glazed. 2.5lb A German sculptor born in Berlin, where his father was a poor tailor. His first teacher was the sculptor Jean-Pierre Tassaert, patronized by Frederick the Great. Tassaert offered his daughter in marriage, but the pupil preferred to elope with another girl to Vienna, and Tassaert not only condoned the offence but furnished money to visit Italy. Three years' study in Rome formed Schadow's style, and in 1788 he returned to Berlin to succeed Tassaert as sculptor to the court and secretary to the Academy. Over half a century he produced upwards of two hundred works, varied in style as in subjects. Measurements: Approx. "Carnavale 1785" (Zwei unmaskierte Männerpaare in Karnevalkostümen der Zeit). Kreidelithographie. 24,5 x 34,6 cm. (1823). Nicht bei Friedländer, Mackowsky 85. Mackowsky ist lediglich ein einziges Exemplar im Schlossmuseum, Weimar bekannt, welches die handschriftliche Annotation Schadows "auf Carrara Marmor gezeichnet" aufweist. Sowohl das Sujet der amüsanten Darstellung als auch die Datierung der Lithographie geben Rätsel auf: Mackowskys Annahme, dass es sich um eine Allegorie auf die "leichtsinnige Jugend und das verlumpte Alter" handelt, ist nicht wirklich überzeugend. Im Jahre 1785 erlebte der junge Schadow den Karneval in Berlin, wo sich diese Art der Figuren jedoch nicht finden ließ. Auch die römischen Karnevalskostüme konnten Schadow, der sich ab 1786 in der Ewigen Stadt aufhielt, nicht als Vorlage für diese Lithographie gedient haben. - Ganz ausgezeichneter und kräftiger Druck mit Rand. Ganz vereinzelte, schwache Stockfleckchen, in den oberen Ecken leicht gewellt bedingt durch Montierungsreste verso, einzelne vertikale Faltspuren, sonst in sehr schöner Erhaltung. Aus der Sammlung Thomas Graf (Lugt 2431a). Johann Gottfried Schadow (1764 Berlin - 1850 ibid.): Seated young woman at a table, c. 1784, Etching Technique: Etching on Paper Date: c. 1784 Description: Whether Johann Gottfried Schadow really depicted his first wife Marianne Devidels in this marvellous, etched miniature remains an open question to this day, even if it seems obvious. Schadow had met the woman, who was five years his senior, in Henriette Herz's Berlin salon. Expecting a scandal due to a cover copy he had contributed to a satirical novel and for personal reasons, Schadow fled with Devidel in 1785. After stops in Dresden and Vienna and sojourns in Venice and Florence, the couple finally reached Rome. Here, Schadow converted to Catholicism and married Devidel, a Jewish woman who had been baptised Catholic, in the same year. The portrait, which is characterised by touching intimacy, concentrates entirely on the modulation of materiality through various cross-hatching techniques. However, these are used very restrainedly and sparingly, so that a spontaneous, fleeting character pervades the sheet. The face, sketched in just a few short strokes, seems to have been captured in a sudden turn, together with a certain blurring of movement. Even if, unlike Chodowiecki, Schadow does not place the seemingly secret observation at the centre of the depiction here, he nevertheless achieves an immediacy in this sheet which, in its unaffected and life-like depiction, not only makes the intimacy of the scene shown clear, but also leads to an intimacy between the viewer and the artwork. Pönicke in Leipzig". At the lower part inscribed in the printing plate: "Johann Georg von Schadow". Date: 1825 Description: In 1825, the sculptor Johann Gottfried Schadow published Wittenberg's Denkmäler der Bildnerei, Baukunst und Malerei, which included a lithographed self-portrait. This shows him en face at the age of about sixty, his upper body with frock coat, loose collar and neckerchief turned slightly to one side. Four years earlier, Schadow's Luther monument had been erected in Wittenberg, one of the early civic monuments of the 19th century. The Schadow portrait in the above-mentioned use is therefore to be understood less as that of a scholarly editor than as a portrait of an independent artist who claims a share of the monument's fame for himself. The little cap on the lithograph identifies him as a sculptor, a detail that distinguishes the present print from an otherwise very similarly drawn self-portrait. The penetrating gaze characterises a self-confident artist whose intention here was obviously to be true to reality and not to idealise. As the lithographic stone had been accidentally ground out after printing part of the edition, a modified version of the portrait had to be drawn on the stone for the rest of the edition, this time reversed, in an oval with a hatched background. Expecting a scandal due to a cover copy he had contributed to a satirical novel and for personal reasons, Schadow fled with Devidel in 1785. After stops in Dresden and Vienna and sojourns in Venice and Florence, the couple finally reached Rome. Here, Schadow converted to Catholicism and married Devidel, a Jewish woman who had been baptised Catholic, in the same year. The portrait, which is characterised by touching intimacy, concentrates entirely on the modulation of materiality through various cross-hatching techniques. However, these are used very restrainedly and sparingly, so that a spontaneous, fleeting character pervades the sheet.
