    Louis Schanker (1903-1981) Cornfields Circa 1940 The exuberant oil on canvas with unusual etched detail is signed lower right front and titled verso on the circa 1940 label from Willard Gallery in New York. The work is displayed in an outstanding pickled wood frame of the period, presumably the original. Louis Schanker embraced abstractionism early on. During the 1930s, he became a founding member of the American Abstract Artists group which played a crucial role in promoting abstract art in the United States. He later served as a graphic arts supervisor for the Works Progress Administration, where he oversaw the creation of public murals and prints. He himself completed murals for radio station WNYC and the 1939 New York World's Fair. Canvas measures 24 x 30.25 with a framed size of 32 x 38 inches.     LOUIS SCHANKER (1903 - 1981) Jai-Alai. Color woodcut on Japan paper, 1939. 255x355 mm; 10 1/8x14 inches, full margins. Signed and numbered 4/34 in pencil, lower margin. A very good impression of this scarce woodcut with strong, richly-inked colors. Brooklyn Museum 30. Schanker was known for his abstract compositions with bold colors and lines and founded the American Abstract Artists, participating in its first annual exhibition in 1937. While participating with the WPA, Schanker worked as an artist and supervisor in the mural division and the graphics division, eventually becoming the director of the graphic arts division. Between 1937-42 he worked on many woodcuts, many of which were published by the Federal Art Project.

    LOUIS SCHANKER (1903 - 1981) Collage. Acrylic and collage on board, 1972. 500x762 mm; 19¾x30 inches. Signed and dated lower left. Stamped with the artist's estate stamp, verso. Provenance Private collection, New York Schanker worked as an artist and supervisor for the New York Works Progress Administration. Most notably, he painted several public murals for the WPA's Federal Art Project, including those at the Neponsit Beach Children's Hospital, the Municipal Broadcasting Station (WNYC Studio) in New York, and for the Hall of Medicine and Public Health Building at the 1939 New York World's Fair.

    Louis Schanker (New York, 1903-1981) Geometric Landscape 1946 The Post War abstract expressionist composition is signed and dated lower right in black pigment and titled verso on the stretcher in graphite. Most artists in America embraced abstraction after World War Two. Louis Schanker was on the early side abstraction in the US as a founding member of the American Abstract Artists group in 1936. He was involved with the WPA around that same time and later, as a teacher who emphasized abstraction and experimentation with his students, influencing a generation of painters. Canvas size 29 x 36, frame measures 34 x 41 inches.
