Theo Scharf, Australian/German 1899-1987 - Wrestling match; ink on paper, signed lower right 'Theo Scharf', 18.7 x 25 cm (ARR) Note: Scarf lived and work in Germany and Eastern Europe following World War I, where he was a professor at Munich academy from Munich Academy of Fine Art in 1934-35. He was particularly known for his etchings made of scenes of the Weimar Republic and his use of ink in this work resembles the lines and energy of these prints. He returned to his native Australia in 1950.

Theodor Eduard Scharf 1899 Melbourne – 1987 Feldafing Radierung auf Bütten. Alle Blätter unterhalb der Darstellung re. in Blei signiert "Theo Scharf" und li. betitelt. Jeweils u.li. von Künstlerhand bezeichnet "Catullus Serie" und nummeriert. Mit den Arbeiten: a) "Lesbia" (Nr. 1) b) "Peleus & Thetis" (Nr. 2) c) "An eine Kneipe" (Nr. 3) Provenienz: Sammlung Lars Boelicke. Theodor Eduard Scharf 1899 Melbourne – 1987 Feldafing Deutsch-australischer Grafiker, Illustrator und Maler. Wuchs in den Künstlerkreisen von Melbourne auf, nachdem sein Vater, der Konzertpianist Eduard Scharf, in den 1890er Jahren nach Australien ausgewandert war, um am dortigen Konservatorium zu unterrichten. Schon früh entdeckte Theo das Zeichnen für sich und erhielt Unterstützung von diversen Mentoren. 1914 Ausstellung in Melbourne. Im selben Jahr Umzug nach München, bis 1924 Studium an der Kunstakademie. Beteiligung an Ausstellungen und Publikationen, u.a. im Satiremagazin Simplicissimus. Ab 1934 Lehrtätigkeit an der Münchner Akademie. Während des 2. WK Einberufung in die Staffel der Bildenden Künstler, um Kriegsschauplätze zu dokumentieren. Weite Teile seines Werks wurden bei Bombenangriffen auf Atelier und Wohnung zerstört. 1950–56 Aufenthalt in Melbourne. Danach Rückkehr nach Deutschland, wo er seinen Lebensabend im bayrischen Feldafing am Starnberger See verbrachte. Heute befinden sich seine Werke sowohl in deutschen und australischen als auch in amerikanischen und britischen Sammlungen.
