OTTO RUDOLF SCHATZ* (Vienna 1900 - 1961 Vienna) The cat killers, 1922 watercolor/paper 61,8 x 47 cm monogrammed ORS, dated 22x verso collection stamp exhibited at "Katzenkorb und Löwengrube" at the Museum of Natural History, Vienna 2017 depicted in catalogue Hagenbund, Widder 2019, p. 63, figure 156 SCHÄTZPREIS / ESTIMATE € 3000 - 6000 STARTPREIS / STARTING PRICE € 3000 Otto Rudolf Schatz pursued an artistic career early on, despite his father’s objections—his father being a senior postal controller. This conflict continued until his father's death during World War II. After attending primary and secondary schools, he took private painting lessons and enrolled in the Vienna School of Applied Arts in 1915, where he expressed his career ambition as “interior painter.” His teachers included notable figures like Oskar Strnad, Franz Cižek, Rudolf Larisch, and Anton Kenner. His studies were interrupted by military service as a volunteer, and his experiences on the front in Bessarabia and Ukraine in 1918 exposed him to the horrors of war. Traumatized and wounded multiple times, he returned to Vienna as a pacifist. After graduating in 1919, Schatz led a restless life, taking on various jobs outside of art. He joined the international avant-garde in Vienna, which provided him with significant artistic impulses. In 1921, he met Max Hevesi, a Hungarian who ran an art salon and a graphic edition for Austrian and Hungarian contemporaries in Vienna, and was also a co-editor of the magazine “Ver.” Hevesi contracted Schatz to exhibit his paintings, watercolors, and graphics, including the portfolio “Die Offenbarung Johannis.” That same year, Schatz participated in Hevesi's second autumn exhibition alongside Uitz, Philippi, and Tischler. An article in “Ver” in October noted, “The chaotic, fermenting, revolutionary spirit of these days finds a full expression in the graphics of Otto Robert [sic] Schatz, whose essence and path may soon lead to a resolution of purely painterly tasks.” Schatz had already addressed the nomadic lifestyle on the streets in his graphic portfolio “Wanderer” in 1920. The political and economic upheavals of the post-war years, as well as the social plight, especially in urban areas, increasingly influenced Schatz’s work during the 1920s—particularly in the form of woodcuts and frescoes for the Vienna Workers’ Academy. However, in his watercolor “Die Katzentöter” (The Cat Killers) from 1922, Schatz reflected on the brutality and trauma of the post-World War I era in a stark manner. He outlines two men capturing and killing cats with rough strokes. The realism and expressiveness of the painting correspond to the rawness and brutality of the depicted scene. The flowing blood casts a fateful veil over the composition, suggesting that this act is the only way for the men to obtain nourishing flesh and warming fur. In Europe, this line of work is often taboo and traditionally associated with the margins of society, though it is a reality even outside of crises. With this piece, Schatz provides a socially critical and entirely extraordinary examination of the events of his time. PLEASE NOTE: The purchase price consists of the highest bid plus the buyer's premium, sales tax and, if applicable, the fee of artists resale rights.
