Bill Schenck ( b 1947) Glen Ford, Oil on Paper, 1984

    Est: $1,000 - $1,500

Property from the Estate of Arthur B. Kouwenhoven Jr., Savannah, GA Description: Bill Schenck (American, b. 1947), Glen Ford, Oil on Paper, 1984, signed and dated 84 lower right, depicting a cowboy on horseback at sunset, with Main Trails Galleries label, Jackson, WY verso and original bill of sale from the gallery dated 7/15/87 for $697.50. Frame size: 14 1/4 in. x 21 1/4 in. Billy Schenck is known for his blend of Western Americana and pop art styles. Schenck draws influence from artists like Warhol and Roy Lichtenstein to create paintings that blend the rugged imagery of the American Wild West with a contemporary perspective. Often mirroring the visual vocabulary of comic book panels and movie stills, his works showcase high contrasts and saturated hues. Collected by institutions including the Smithsonian, the Denver Art Museum, and the Tucson Museum of Art, Schenck’s artwork offers a visually rich exploration of American myths and realities. Measurements: Height: by sight 7 1/2 in. x Width: 14 1/2 in. Condition: Good condition, not viewed out of frame. Frame with losses to gilt surface. Notice to bidders: The absence of a condition report does not imply that the lot is in perfect condition or completely free from wear and tear, imperfections, or the conditions of aging. PHOTOS MAY ALSO ACT AS A CONDITION REPORT. Please review all photos closely prior to bidding. Complete condition reports are available by request, no later than 24 hours prior to the live auction. Nov. 15, 2025

    BILL SCHENCK (AMERICAN, B. 1947)

    Est: $4,000 - $8,000

Bill Schenck American, b. 1947 Have a Nice Day Oil on canvas Signed and dated 89 lower right, also signed, titled and dated on verso. Woman in a cowboy hat pointing a gun at the sky, unframed. Bill "Billy" Schenck was born in Ohio in 1947, and spent childhood summers exploring the wilderness near Lander, Wyoming. He attended Columbus College of Art and Design from 1965 to 1967 and received his BFA from Kansas City Art Institute in 1969; eventually moving to New York where he worked briefly as an assistant to Andy Warhol in the 1970s. When he was 24 years old, his first solo show in New York City sold out. Sometimes called the "Andy Warhol of the West", Billy utilizes sharp contrasts, dramatic framing, and flattened color blocks to meld Pop Art and iconic Western scenes. A true cowboy by his own right, Billy once said, "You can't fake the West. If you don't know horses, land, and hard work, it'll show in the art." Settled in Santa Fe, New Mexico, he is an accomplished horseman, ranch-sorter, and ranch owner; and has achieved more than one championship rodeo title. Recognized for almost half a century as one of the pioneer painters in the Western pop art movement, Billy Schenck has had over 100 solo shows and is included in 44 museum collections. Museum collections include the Mesa Southwest Museum, The Tucson Museum of Art, The Denver Art Museum, Museum of the Southwest, Midland TX, Albuquerque Fine Arts Museum and the New Mexico Museum of Art. Private collections include the estate of Malcolm Forbes, Steve Forbes, Chris Evert, Elaine Horwitch, Louis Meisel, Martina Navratilova, Laurance Rockefeller, the estate of Fritz Scholder and Sylvester Stallone.
