Tai-Shan Schierenberg, British b.1962 - Woman in front of radiator, 1996; oil on canvas, signed and dated on the reverse of the frame 'T. Schierenberg '96', 75.5 x 75.6 cm (ARR) Provenance: with Flowers East, 1996; Private Collection, purchased from the above in 1996 Note: Schierenberg attended St Martin’s School of Art (1981–85) before continuing at the Slade School of Fine Art (1985–87). In 1989, he won the National Portrait Gallery’s John Player Portrait Award. He was subsequently commissioned to paint Sir John Mortimer for the Gallery. His work is held in major collections including the National Portrait Gallery, London, Tate, London, Royal Society, London, Cambridge University, Cambridge and Yale Center for British Art, USA. Since 2013, he has regularly appeared as a judge on Sky Arts’ Portrait Artist of the Year and Landscape Artist of the Year. Renowned for his broad, gestural brushwork, apparent in the present lot, Shierenberg successfully captures emotion through figural depiction. The simplicity of this painting, contrasting the expressive brushstrokes results in a powerful sense of intimacy and vulnerability, drawing attention to the emotional presence of the figure.
