Oskar Schlemmer, Raum mit sieben Figuren, 1937

    Est: €150,000 - €180,000

Unsigned. Oskar Schlemmer’s “Raum mit sieben Figuren”, which is done in warm tones of orange and red and features an emphatically perspectival composition, was created in 1937 and thus belongs to the artist’s late work. For Schlemmer, the years following the Nazis’ seizure of power in 1933 were defined by professional restrictions but also by artistic successes, new motifs and a personal new beginning. After the dissolution of the Bauhaus, the termination of his teaching contract at the Staatsschule für Kunst und Kunstgewerbe in Berlin and increasing defamation through the Nazis, Schlemmer and his family moved to rural southern Baden, where an inheritance enabled him to design a house and have it built in Sehringen bei Badenweiler. In 1935 he also began processing the new circumstances of his life in his art. Besides studio still lifes and images of weaving women, he developed a group of family images, which he calls “Lebensskizzen” (sketches from life) in his journal. These works include the “Raum mit sieben Figuren” that is up for auction. Besides the – albeit stylised – depiction of his wife and children, Schlemmer also revisited the theme of the figure in geometrical space which he had examined at the Bauhaus (Karin von Maur, Oskar Schlemmer, München 1979, p. 134). As this painting clearly shows, the stark construction of planes characteristic of the Bauhaus period is renounced in the late 1930s in favour of an emphatic perspectivism realised by means of the surfaces of the walls and the furniture. This work done in tones of orange, red and blue reveals a quiet sense of community that is also not to be found in this form during the Bauhaus years. The open books of the figure on the left and in the middle symbolise this and so do the two figures turned towards each other on the right. The sometimes thickly applied colour and the dramatic play of light and shadow are also new, and the latter imbues the figures with a certain vitality in spite of all their severity. Even if significant public commissions remained absent during this period, with his “Lebensskizzen” Schlemmer created a group of works that is new but is developed in keeping with his artistic principles. The year 1937 ended well for Schlemmer, with exhibitions at Ferdinand Möller in Berlin, the Galerie Valentien in Stuttgart and in the London Gallery, where a total of 84 works also made him a familiar name and famous in England.

    Est: €80,000 - €120,000

Exemplar "hors commerce" aside from the edition of 10 casts made from 1968 ff. Artistically speaking, 1930 was an extremely significant year for Oskar Schlemmer. He began his professorship at Breslau’s renowned academy of art, his wall paintings for the Folkwang Museum brought him the public recognition he had long been waiting for and he was finally able to give real form to the lengthy preliminary work he had been doing on a dematerialised, floating image of a human figure through the nearly three-metre-tall wire figure “Homo”. The work up for auction here, “Homo”, is from Schlemmer’s combined home and studio in Sehringen near Badenweiler. The monumental wire figure was commissioned by Erich Rabe MD, who had the three-part work installed in the two-storey foyer of the house Adolf Rading built for him in Zwenkau, near Leipzig. With two pen-and-ink drawings that are also entitled “Homo” serving as his starting point, Schlemmer used three coloured metal wires made of copper, brass and nickel to develop a two-dimensional stylised figure conceived in linear and geometric terms. The head and bent legs are done in profile, in contrast to the powerful upper body, which is depicted frontally. The figure’s circular right hand holds a delicate, embossed-metal sculpture of a female figure depicted from behind. At the Rabe House, a monumental profile of a face made of a metal band that cast a shadow was located to the right of this constellation and responded to it. A metallic element made up of concentric circles of wire served as the central link connecting them. As Karin v. Maur writes, Schlemmer had found a medium particularly suited to him in wire sculpture: “This is revealed not just through the joy with which he took up the opportunity to carry out his work on a monumental scale at the beginning of the thirties but also through his highly developed sense for the graphic contour, for the weightless and filigree, for the precise and absolute, which had already manifested itself early on in the one-dimensional pen-and-ink drawings and ultimately had to inevitably lead him to wire as a sculptural contour” (Karin v. Maur, Oskar Schlemmer. Das plastische Werk, Stuttgart 1972, p. 74). Even if Schlemmer only rarely discussed the meaning of his works and also only wrote about technical aspects in the case of this piece, the echoes of the creation motif, of Adam and Eve, are obvious here. Schlemmer’s wire sculptures, the idea for which came from the period around 1920, place him among the pioneers in the invention of these dematerialised works. Neither in the case of Alexander Calder nor Pablo Picasso, who were experimenting with the medium of wire around that same time, are such clear and precisely planned wire sculptures to be found among their drawn preliminary steps or their realised works.

Todestag, September–November 1953, no. 133 Kestner-Gesellschaft, Hannover, Oskar Schlemmer, November 28, 1953 – January 3, 1954, no. 59 with b/w.-ill. (there titled Mädchenkopf), this exhibition later travelled to Wuppertal, Von der Heydt-Museum and Hagen, Karl-Ernst-Osthaus-Museum In search of new ways to lend greater depth to his paintings, Oskar Schlemmer turned in 1936 to compositions distinguished above all by their intense darkness, relieved only by small passages of lighter tones. Owing to the general scarcity of canvas, Schlemmer painted during this period on oil paper – a circumstance that had the indirect advantage that the sheets required no priming and, moreover, could more easily be concealed from the authorities. His artistic inclination towards veiling and concealment began to crystallise markedly during this year. Increasingly, he concentrated on the boundaries of shadow and the forms of light, on the autonomous life of grey zones and their parity within illumination. That this act of veiling and partially revealing constituted a painterly response to the political situation of the time is made clear by the artist’s own words: “Since the artistic means have fallen into disrepute as ‘artistic’ […] everything must now be done to clothe them, to bring them forth unobtrusively, so that they are present indirectly, beneath and behind the surface – but ‘thoroughly’ so.” More and more, Schlemmer inclined towards constructing large, synthetic pictorial and thematic blocks, seeking a spiritualisation of painting – a psychological foundation for peinture pure. Thus he elevated the veiling greyness of shadow, the recession into neutralising photographic tones, to a refuge of his art, giving full expression to this in four oil-on-paper compositions, of which Graue Figur mit heller Hand is offered here at auction. In a letter from the wife of the first owner, Mrs. Grete Beck, to Mrs. Tut Schlemmer dated 18 July 1949, it is stated that the painting had originally borne the title “Graue Figur mit heller Hand / Erinnerung an OM” (“Grey Figure with Light Hand / In Memory of OM”) and the stamp Oskar Schlemmer / Wuppertal Döppersberg. This type of title is characteristic of Schlemmer and was in all likelihood based on an inscription in his own hand that may once have appeared on the reverse of the original mount (the letter does not specify the exact location of the inscription). The subtitle “In Memory of OM” (i.e. Otto Meyer-Amden) is entirely fitting, for the composition clearly reveals thematic parallels to Meyer-Amden – Schlemmer’s close friend, who had died three years earlier. The delicate, allusive modelling of light and shadow in the head recalls Meyer-Amden’s heads. It is probable that the diary entry of 19 March 1936 referring to “OM head yesterday” pertains to this work; there he further notes his wish to return “to grey,” in order to achieve “an imaginary corporeality that leaves the mystery intact.” (Unpublished; see Karin von Maur in Oskar Schlemmer. Unsigned. Printed estate label on mat verso with confirmatory signature from Tut Schlemmer. The Estate of Oskar Schlemmer Following an agreement reached in court regarding the long legal battle over the estate of Bauhaus master Oskar Schlemmer (1888-1943), two central works by the artist are now coming up for auction at Lempertz. Finalised in December 2024, the court settlement regulates the allocation of numerous paintings, watercolours and drawings formerly owned by the artist’s widow, Tut Schlemmer. At the end of the proceedings, it was no longer only about 65 works (some of which were in storage at the Stuttgarter Staatsgalerie at that time) but the complete estate. Donations to selected museums are also part of the agreement. Kunsthaus Lempertz had already auctioned off the first work from the estate in November 2024: “Freiplastik G”, the most important sculpture from Schlemmer’s Bauhaus period. Now, at the auction at the end of May, 21 works from the Schlemmer estate will initially be put up for sale. The top two lots are the large-format “Komposition auf Rosa” and the “Sechs-Köpfe-Fries”, which belongs to the artist’s late work as a painter. These are joined by eighteen, primarily early works on paper. Besides watercolours featuring characteristic heads and groups of diners arranged in perspective, the Schlemmer estate also includes a preliminary drawing for what may be Schlemmer’s best-known work, the painting “Bauhaustreppe” (Museum of Modern Art, New York). Kunsthaus Lempertz is pleased to be able to auction these works. The auctioneer Henrik Hanstein was appointed as trustee by the higher regional court.
