Von 1913 bis 1928 gehörte Schmitz-Pleis dem Düsseldorfer Künstlerverein Malkasten an. Er beteiligte sich an zahlreichen großen Kunstausstellungen, etwa in der Kunsthalle Düsseldorf oder dem dortigen Kunstpalast, auch an den Jahresausstellungen der Künstlerverbindung Niederrhein.
