      • Walter Elmer Schofield (American, 1867–1944) Winter in the Park (Blue Skies)
        Dec. 04, 2022

Walter Elmer Schofield (American, 1867–1944) Winter in the Park (Blue Skies)

        Est: $30,000 - $50,000

Walter Elmer Schofield (American, 1867–1944) Winter in the Park (Blue Skies) Signed 'Schofield' bottom right, oil on canvas 26 x 30 in. (66 x 76.2cm) Executed circa 1922. Provenance Collection of Enid and Seymour R. Schofield. Private Collection, Florida. Exhibited "Schofield: International Impressionist," Woodmere Art Museum, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, September 18, 2014-January 25, 2015, no. 39. Literature William R. Valerio, Schofield: International Impressionist, Woodmere Art Museum, Philadelphia, 2014, p. 156, no. 39 (illustrated). Note The present work likely depicts the Wissahickon, where Schofield regularly painted while staying with his brother Albert's family in Chestnut Hill from the 1920s to the 1940s. Executed en plein air, it is a particularly fine example of the smaller scale snow scenes produced by the artist in the 1920s and speaks to Schofield's newfound nostalgic, "eternal" artistic expression, in contrast with his early, more modern and social views which focused on working mills and rivers in France. Departing from the artist's larger and moodier canvases from the previous decade, Winter in the Park showcases Schofield's maturity and shows how influenced he was by Edward Redfield's bold and energetic touch. Here, the viewer is presented with a close-up view of a wooded stream, with a very low horizon line, giving us the impression to crawl in the snow, sheltered under the canopy of trees, and forcing us to concentrate on the aesthetic qualities of the work, replete with vibrant and brilliant colors. The turquoise flow of the river contrasts with the glaring white of the snow-covered banks, the dark trunks of the nearby birch trees, and the golden hues of the sunlit stone bridge in the distance, dotted with bold orange and reds, which serve to accentuate the shimmering aspect of the painting. Rapidly executed, yet tightly structured and highly realistic, the work conveys a sense of majesty and tranquility that forces the viewer's meditation, and contemplation, echoing Schofield's own feelings: "Nature is always vital, even in her implicit moods and never denies a vision to the real lover." The wax-lined canvas in overall good condition, with a nicely preserved impasto especially visible in the snow parts. Examination under UV ligh reveals scattered, localized inpainting at center left and upper left, along the left outer edge. Similar pattern on the opposite edge, at center right, along the right extreme edge. Some more inpainting at center and bottom center, on each side of the main tree trunk: see the other bend, the nearby branches, and on the snow ground at bottom. Frame: 32 1/2 x 36 1/4 x 1 3/4 in. (66 x 75.9cm) Provenance Private Collection, New Jersey. Frame: 34 x 1/4 x 38 x 2 in. The unlined canvas in overall fair condition. With a slight buckle to the canvas at bottom left corner. The surface of the work would benefit from a light cleaning, judging from the whites of the composition. With a flaking issue throughout: some paint chips visible at bottom left quadrant, on either side of the tree, on its trunk and at center left on the snow path. Some, more minor, flakes also visible at bottom center, along the bottom outer edge, and in the bottom right quadrant in the snoz (including one active piece of lifting painting). Similar lifting pattern at upper right corner, on the tree branch going over the house with the red chimney, to the right. See specialist's pictures. Examination under UV light does not reveal any signs of inpainting. However, we do notice an uneven layer of greenish varnish, and the blue pigments are fluorescent, which must be due to the chemicals of the pigment itself. Not a sign of restoration.

      • WALTER ELMER SCHOFIELD (AMERICAN, 1867–1944) BY THE LAKE (MOST LIKELY TUJUNGA, CALIFORNIA)
        Dec. 05, 2021

WALTER ELMER SCHOFIELD (AMERICAN, 1867–1944) BY THE LAKE (MOST LIKELY TUJUNGA, CALIFORNIA)

        Est: $10,000 - $15,000

Walter Elmer Schofield (American, 1867–1944) By the Lake (Most Likely Tujunga, California) Signed 'Schofield' bottom left, oil on panel 20 x 24 in. (50.8 x 61cm) Executed circa 1934. Provenance Collection of George Turner Marsh, San Francisco, California. By descent in the Marsh family. Private Collection, Northern California. Footnote: Note The present work dates from Schofield's extended trip out-west in the mid-1930s. Travelling through California and Arizona, the artist was in search of new subject matters that would contrast from his winter scenes set along the Delaware River, his spring scenes from the Cornish coast and his summer scenes in Maine. In California specifically, the artist made a series of paintings of Tujunga Canyon and the Grand Tujunga ranch, just northeast of Los Angeles. Unexpectedly, the artist felt attracted to the desert landscape and said: "There is no doubt in my mind that the State of California and particularly Southern California is a perfect paradise for the out-of-doors painters. Coupled with the wonderful climate, there is a great divesity of physical features." The present work aligns perfectly with the other body of work the artist produced in the area, and in fact relies on the same contrast between yellows and blues, earthy tones and lighter hues, to suggest the chromatic reality of life out-west: an immaculate blue sky overhanging the most golden earth. Condition report: Frame: 25 x 29 x 1 1/2 in. In overall good condition, with bright colors. We notice painting's contractons on the white boat (to the side) as well as cracks within the panel at upper right in the sky (very faint, minor). Examination under UV light reveals minor restoration above and to the right of the boat (in the water) as well as at upper center (cloud, sky and in the dip where the two hills meet) as well as at upper right (in the sky, through the branches, within the aforementioned cracks). The upper left corner of the painting fluoresces but this is due to the panel being bare (as part of the artist's working method) and not a sign of restoration. The main element of restoration can be found at bottom right, to the right of the boat: abraded ring that has been touched up. See specialist's pictures for more details.

Walter Elmer Schofield (American, 1867–1944) View of Eastby Crag, Embsay, Yorkshire Signed 'Schofield' bottom right, oil on canvas 24 x 36 1/8 in. (61 x 91.8cm) Executed circa 1906-1907. Provenance The Artist. Private Collection, Ribchester, United Kingdom. Private Collection, Scotland, United Kingdom Note In 1903, Walter Schofield and his wife Murielle Redmayne settled in the artist's community of St. Ives, Cornwall. The present view of Eastby was most likely executed while the couple was on vacation in the nearby town of Ingleton during the summer of 1906, and finished by the artist once back in his St. Ives studio in 1907. That same year, the painting was included in Schofield's Cornish Show Day Exhibition. It was then sold locally by the artist himself circa 1910 and remained unnoticed until its recent rediscovery. Condition report: Frame: 31 x 43 x 1 3/4 in. The relined canvas in overall fair to good condition. We notice hairline (thin) craquelure throughout the work (especially visible in the sky). With scattered, relatively extensive restoration in the sky along the top outer edge of the work, and along the hill. We notice the canvas ground is exposed in some parts of the same outer edge, especially to the left. Some minor repairs also visible at center left, along the left outer edge, at center above the stream, as well as at bottom right quadrant. See Specialist's pictures for more details.

        Est: $30,000 - $50,000

Walter Elmer Schofield (American, 1867–1944) River in Snow Signed and dated 'W E Schofield/'06' bottom right, oil on canvas 24 x 30 in. (61 x 76.2cm) In a Phillip N. Yates-style frame. Provenance The Artist. By descent in the Schofield family. Cheffins, Cambridge, sale of March 7, 2013, lot 453. Acquired directly from the above sale. Private Collection, Connecticut. Footnote: Note Walter Schofield may have been the most international of all the Pennsylvania Impressionists. Born in Philadelphia in 1867, he studied at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts from 1889 to 1892, and spent most of his life between two continents: while he would record the frosty and picturesque winters in the Delaware Valley from April to October, he would spend his summers in England, specifically Cornwall, where he painted the quaint hamlets he is known for today. The stately manor he stayed at, Godolphin, also provided a desirable subject throughout the years. The following two works illustrate the versatility of the artist, who could depict the changing effects of light on the landscape no matter the season, whether it was a shaded brook in Pennsylvania, or the rugged shore of Maine, where he was also frequently painting. One can sense the similarity between Schofield's bold and vigorous style in each painting and that of Redfield, the Father of Pennsylvania Impressionsm. If the two started off as close friends, often painting near each other, Schofield's exploration of the plein air motif, which he would translate on large-size canvas irritated Redfield, who considered his touch unique, and caused a schism between the two artists. Painted in 1906, River in Snow recalls Schofield's first real success from 1899, Winter (now at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts). It is a typical early snow scene, with a quiet and intimate mood reminiscent of paintings of icebound pools by John Henry Twachtman. As such, it appears more Tonalist in execution than Impressionistic, as exemplified by the soft, silvery hues used to depict the ice-cold river. Contrary to Winter however, Schofield introduces a perspective to his painting by inserting the view of a nearby village in the distance, which enables the painting to breathe and open-up. The work was most likely painted in Pennsylvania, outdoors, and as pays homage to Redfield, who also liked to depict such close-up views of streams in the forest, not too far from the nearest village often represented in one of the corners of the canvas. Rocks and Sea, Chebeague Island, Maine is another strong example of Schofiel's talent, and uses many of the compositional tools the artist used in his Cornish paintings. Both locales shared the same ruggedness, which appealed greatly to Schofield. Without any architecture in sight, simply rocks, surf and weed, Schofield immortalizes a vision of nature freed from mankind - a trait often visible in his paintings, which are usually devoid of any human figures. Such a coast scene offers a dramatic spectacle; that of massive rock formations wrestling against the powerful, pounding waves. Condition report: The unlined canvas in overall very good condition. With minuscule, pinpoint holes in all four corners. Examination under UV light reveals remnants of green varnish at center (relatively minor). With pinpoint, localized restoration at bottom left (inpainted flake), at upper center (along top outer edge), at upper left (small touch-ups in the branches). With some paint remnants at upper right, along right outer edge. Frame: 35 1/4 x 41 1/2 x 2 1/2 in.
