Der hl. Martin. Kupferstich. 15,5 x 10,5 cm. Um 1480. B. 57, Lehrs 62, Hollstein 62. Wz. Ochsenkopf mit Stange und Herz. Wurzbach datiert das Blatt in die dritte Periode des Schongauer'schen Werks und rechnete es zu einer Suite mit größeren Heiligen. Ganz ausgezeichneter Druck knapp innerhalb der Einfassungslinie geschnitten, rechts sowie unten diese teils sichtbar, entlang des oberen Randes leicht in die Darstellung geschnitten. Minimal angestaubt und leicht altersspurig, entlang des oberen Randes sehr sorgfältig und unauffällig angerändert, weitere Ausbesserung entlang der äußeren Ränder, unten sowie links mit Spuren von Feder in der Einfassungslinie sowie auch oben teils nahe des Randes und im äußersten Kopf des Heiligen, weitere Gebrauchsspuren, sonst gleichwohl sehr gut. Overall, however, in fine condition for a sheet of the 15th century Erläuterungen / Comments Traditionell wurde Schongauers 12 Blatt umfassende Passionsfolge ans Ende seiner Tätigkeit als Graphiker gestellt und auf die frühen 1480er-Jahre datiert. Da das Kreuzigungsblatt (Lehrs 27) jedoch bereits 1476 in einem spanischen Missale kopiert wurde, ist es durchaus möglich, dass die ganze Folge um die Mitte der 1470er-Jahre fertiggestellt war. Traditionally, Schongauer’s Passion series comprising 12 sheets was placed at the end of his career as a printmaker and dated to the early 1480s. However, since the Crucifixion sheet (Lehrs 27) was already copied in a Spanish missal in 1476, it is quite possible that the entire series was completed around the middle of the 1470s. The fine borderline is mostly fully visible Erläuterungen / Comments Ein Hauptblatt Martin Schongauers, das zusammen mit drei weiteren gleichformatigen grossen Szenen aus dem Leben Marias wohl als Teil eines umfangreicheren, aber nie zur Ausführung gelangten Zyklus geplant und bereits in der ersten Hälfte der 1470er-Jahre entstanden war. Zustandsdrucke, also Abdrucke von der noch unvollendeten Platte, kommen in der frühen Graphik so gut wie gar nicht vor. Das gilt auch für Schongauers Werk. Von den 115 bekannten Kupferstichen kennt Lehrs lediglich bei vier Arbeiten eine Zustandsveränderung aus der Lebzeit des Künstlers (Lehrs 6, 33, 34 und 76). Der 1933 von William M. Ivins erstmals anhand eines Abdrucks im New Yorker Metropolitan Museum beschriebene I. Zustand der "Anbetung der Könige" ist daher eine Seltenheit allerersten Ranges. Gegenüber den späteren Drucken hat der Stern oben links eine gänzlich andere Struktur; ausserdem hat die Schmuckbordüre des von einem Diener gehaltenen Mantels rechts in der Mitte der Komposition noch eine ornamentale Verzierung und in der Ecke unten links sind Teile der Pflanze noch nicht ausgeführt. A major print by Martin Schongauer, which, together with three other large scenes of the same format from the life of Mary, was probably planned as part of a more extensive cycle that was never executed and was already created in the first half of the 1470s. Proofs of state, that is, impressions from the still unfinished plate, are virtually unknown in early printmaking. This also applies to Schongauer’s work. Of the 115 known engravings, Lehrs notes a change of state during the artist’s lifetime for only four works (Lehrs 6, 33, 34, and 76). The first state of "Anbetung der Könige", first described in 1933 by William M. Ivins based on an impression in the Metropolitan Museum, New York, is therefore an exceptional rarity. Compared to later impressions, the star at the upper left has a completely different structure; in addition, the ornamental border of the cloak held by a servant at the right center of the composition still has a decorative pattern, and in the lower left corner, parts of the plant are not yet executed. The fine borderline mostly fully visible Erläuterungen / Comments Ein Hauptblatt Martin Schongauers, das zusammen mit drei weiteren gleichformatigen grossen Szenen aus dem Leben Marias wohl als Teil eines umfangreicheren, aber nie zur Ausführung gelangten Zyklus geplant und bereits in der ersten Hälfte der 1470er Jahre entstanden war. Zustandsdrucke, also Abdrucke von der noch unvollendeten Platte, kommen in der frühen Graphik so gut wie gar nicht vor. Das gilt auch für Schongauers Werk. Von den 115 bekannten Kupferstichen kennt Lehrs lediglich bei vier Arbeiten eine Zustandsveränderung aus der Lebzeit des Künstlers (Lehrs 6, 33, 34 und 76). Der 1933 von William M. Ivins erstmals anhand eines Abdrucks im New Yorker Metropolitan Museum beschriebene I. Zustand der "Anbetung der Könige" ist daher eine Seltenheit allerersten Ranges. Gegenüber den späteren Drucken hat der Stern oben links eine gänzlich andere Struktur; ausserdem hat die Schmuckbordüre des von einem Diener gehaltenen Mantels rechts in der Mitte der Komposition noch eine ornamentale Verzierung und in der Ecke unten links sind Teile der Pflanze noch nicht ausgeführt. A major work by Martin Schongauer probably dating from the first half of the 1470s, which, together with three other large scenes from the life of Mary in the same format, was probably planned as part of a more extensive cycle that was never realised. State prints, i.e. prints from the still unfinished plate, are virtually non-existent in early prints. This also applies to Schongauer's work. Of the 115 known engravings, Lehrs only recognises a change of state in four works from the artist's lifetime (Lehrs 6, 33, 34 and 76). The first state of the "Adoration of the Magi", first described by William M. Ivins in 1933 on the basis of an impression in the Metropolitan Museum in New York, is therefore a rarity of the first order. Compared to the later prints, the star at the top left has a completely different structure; in addition, the decorative border of the cloak held by a servant on the right in the centre of the composition still has an ornamental decoration and parts of the plant in the bottom left corner have not yet been worked out. Engraving on laid paper with watermark "Profile Head " (Lehr's watermark 70). (1470 - about 1473). 17.7 x 16.2 cm (sheet). A very fine, delicate impression, black and sharp in the contour lines, of the charming image of a peasant family riding to market, embedded in an Alsatian landscape. The present engraving is one of the rare secular, genre-like depictions, whose technical execution, richness of detail and depiction of the figures are reminiscent of Netherlandish painting. Lehrs classifies the work in the first, early group on the basis of the watermark and assigns it to Schongauer's early work; the steep-legged "M" in the monogram also speaks in favour of an early engraving by the artist. The engraving shows a peasant family of three on their way to market. The peasant, with a basket and a sack over his shoulder, leads his horse, tired and bent over. He is carrying a sword in a scabbard damaged at the bottom, a sign that the paths over land were not safe. The peasant woman and her child ride on the horse. She is barefoot, holding poultry in one hand and a long branch forked like a crown in the other; a sheathed knife hangs from her belt. Behind her sits the child with an elaborate headdress. A village with a church and well is visible in the background on the right. The hilly landscape appears gentle and fertile. According to Thomas Hirte, Schongauer drew on an altarpiece by Dierick Bouts when creating the landscape. The composition of the figures is reminiscent of the traditional depiction of the "Flight into Egypt". However, the present depiction lacks any sacred reference. The engraving is one of the first that Schongauer created after his return from travelling to Beaune in Burgundy and the north of the Netherlands. Lehrs knows of around 40 examples in public collections. - The upper edge carefully applied. The lower edge with a professional and inconspicuous repair, otherwise in very good condition. Extremely rare!

A superb, richly-inked impression of this exceedingly scarce engraving, with very strong contrasts. Working in Colmar, once a part of southwestern Germany that is now Alsatian France, Schongauer (1430-1491) was among the earliest known northern artists to fully utilize the craft of engraving. Many of his prints, like his few known paintings, reveal an affinity with the work of early Netherlandish artists such as Jan van Eyck, Roger van der Weyden and Dirk Bouts. Schongauer imitated the monumentality associated with the altar paintings of these celebrated Netherlandish artists. Schongauer's exquisitely engraved images were circulated widely throughout Europe. The sheer number of engraved copies of Schongauer's prints, made by other artists during his lifetime, attests to his popularity and the significant demand for his work in the late 15th/early 16th century (Schongauer made approximately 115 engravings of different subjects, of which there are an equivalent number of different copies made by other artists during the late 15th century alone. One of Schongauer's best known engravings, The Death of the Virgin, early 1470s, was copied in at least seven different prints by the early 16th century). Most importantly, he was one of the first printmakers who developed an individual style and whose engravings helped to stimulate an interest in collecting prints hitherto unseen in northern Europe. Schongauer's work paved the way for the success of subsequent printmakers and was profoundly influential to the generation of engravers who proceeded him, most notably Albrecht Dürer (see lots 7-11 and 25-48). In 1492, the 21-year-old prodigious Dürer intended on training with Schongauer, but arrived at the master engraver's workshop just months after his death. Dürer went on to emulate Schongauer by incising deep engraved lines in his plates to extend their printing life, thereby increasing their commercial viability, and ultimately surpassed Schongauer's appeal and popularity. A superb, richly-inked impression of this exceedingly scarce, early engraving, with very strong contrasts and little to no sign of wear. According the National Gallery of Art, Washington, D.C., which holds another impression of this engraving, " Christ Enthroned, with two Angels is one of the finest compositions from Schongauer's mature period in a corpus of well over a hundred prints . . . The engraving depicts Christ in his manifestation as God the Father, redeemer of the world. Haloed, crowned, and enthroned, he bears a scepter and an orb, all symbols of celestial royalty. Two angels beneath a canopy draw apart curtains to reveal the figure of the deity bestowing his blessing. In performing this service, the angels also enact a theological metaphor. The Latin word for veil (vela) is the root of the word "revelation," literally "to unveil." Thus, in the modest dimensions of a print, Schongauer has presumed to perform no less than a revelation, as if to evoke the famous passage: 'For now we see through a glass darkly; but then face to face' (1 Corinthians 13:12)." Provenance: Richard Herrlinger, Vienna, with the blue ink stamp verso (Lugt 5818; according to Lugt, Herrlinger was advised by Joseph Meder, the curator of prints at the Albertina, Vienna, who specialized in early German engravings and was the author of the definitive catalogue raisonné of prints by Albrecht Dürer).
