Künstlerinfo: eigentlich Werner Wilhelm Gustav Schuch, dt. Werner Schuch, attr, Battle scene dramatic scene with fighting foot soldiers and cavalry on the battlefield, probably a scene from the Napoleonic Wars of Liberation, slightly pastose history painting, oil on canvas, around 1900, monogrammed "WS" in ligature lower right, attached label with information on Werner Schuch on the reverse, scratches, in need of cleaning and minor restoration, mounted in a gilt stucco frame, inner dimensions approx. 51 x 65.5 cm. Artist info: actually Werner Wilhelm Gustav Schuch, German architect. German architect, history and landscape painter and illustrator (1843 Hildesheim - 1918 Berlin), studied architecture at the Hanover Polytechnic under Conrad Wilhelm Hase from 1860-64, worked in Hase's office from 1864-66, then as a construction manager, 1866-67 spent time in Paris, worked as a freelance architect from 1867, teacher from 1872-82 and professor of architecture at the Hanover Polytechnic from 1875, at the same time turned to painting from 1872 and studied at the Düsseldorf Academy from 1876-77, further artistic training in Munich from 1881-93, largely self-taught as a painter, ended his architectural teaching career in 1883 and worked as a freelance painter, from then on lived temporarily in Munich, Dresden and Berlin, member of the Hanover Art Association from 1871, member of the General German Art Association and the Berlin Artists' Association, source: Thieme-Becker, Boetticher, Seubert, Bruckmann "Lexikon der Düsseldorfer Malerschule", Saur "Bio-Bibliographisches Künstlerlexikon", Müller-Singer and Wikipedia.

Werner Schuch, An oil study for the painting "Völkerschlacht bei Leipzig" Signed lower left: Werner SchuchThe following three lots encompass a drawing and two studies in oil by various artists, which were used as preparatory sketches for the large-scale murals in the Ruhmeshalle (literally "Hall of Fame") in Berlin. This hall was designed on the initiative of Emperor Wilhelm I as of 1877 and incorporated into the Zeughaus (arsenal) opposite Berlin Palace. It was intended to be decorated with numerous history paintings, statues and busts of the most significant military events and personalities of Prussian history. The Ruhmeshalle occupied the upper floor of the arsenal's north wing and comprised the central Herrscherhalle (Hall of Sovereigns) flanked by two Feldherrenhallen (Halls of Generals). Following the dissolution of Prussia and the closure of the Ruhmeshalle, several of the exhibits were displayed in other locations, others were put into storage and others still were destroyed in war. Im Hintergrund ein geplundertes Dorf mit brennender Kirche, daruber ein drauender Himmel. Leichte Craquelierung im Bereich der Figuren, winzige Fehlstellen, Kanten etwas bestossen. Ungerahmt, 191 x 137 cm. Schuch (1843 - 1918) studierte zunachst Architektur, wandte sich dann aber der Malerei zu und betatigte sich hauptsachlich als Schlachten- und Landschaftsmaler. Seine Werke hingen in bedeutenden Museen in Berlin, Breslau, Dresden, Hamburg und vielen anderen deutschen Stadten. S.a. Thieme-Becker Bd. XXX, S. 308 und Boettcher, Malerwerke des 19. Schuch (1843 - 1918) first studied architecture, then devoted himself to painting and specialized in war and landscape painting.
