RoGalleryJerry Schurr (1940-) "Castle Rock" Limited Edition Serigraph. Jerry Schurr is known for rugged landscape paintings and prints of the Western United States. Trained as a painter at the University of Pennsylvania and Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, Philadelphia-born Schurr began to make serigraphs in 1971. Since then Schurr has developed a complex "reduction" method of painting and silk-screen printing that is as precise, and difficult to master, as the extraordinary multi-leveled imagery of his complicated vistas. Using as many as 75 colors in a single image, Schurr works on single large canvas or screen to which he applies stencils of the individual image areas. After an area has been completed, that portion is blocked out, thereby gradually reducing the open areas of the image as the composition slowly builds, layer upon layer, on the substrata. Jerry Schurr's love of nature has led him from his overview of a vast pre-historic landscape to a study of the exquisite creatures that inhabit the nooks and crannies of that space. His latest images are three dimensional constructs of butterflies, moths and orchids. Each of these later color renderings are consistent with Schurr's layered approach. The butterflies, moths and orchids are constructed using color overlays and linear complexities derived directly from the actual specimens or their scientific photographic images. Every one is a celebration. In the tradition of Plato's concept that there is an ideal a prior form for all things existing in the material world, Schurr's creations are as close to perfectly symmetrical in both color and construct as he has been able to achieve. These are "Ideal" butterflies, moths and orchids. Bradford'sJerry Schurr (1940-) "Lake Tahoe" Silkscreen. In the Spring of 1983 he had a show at the Spectrum Gallery, Tahoe City, California, and the gallery owners, Judy and Gene, asked him if he would do an image of the lake in the near future. The show was his first visit to Tahoe and visual experience of the area up to that point, was very limited. Judy and Gene proceeded to give him a whirlwind tour including a panoramic view of the Lake from Desolation Wilderness, a spectacular preserve above the Lake's western shore. When I arrived back at his studio, he began a series of drawings based on his Tahoe experience. The painting that he finally completed is an idealized view of Tahoe. He began the Tahoe serigraph in December, 1993 and completed the edition by Spring 1984. The Spectrum Gallery launched the print in June and by the end of summer the edition was sold out. The remaining pieces are artist Proofs and have remained in my possession since their printing. Bradford'sJerry Schurr (1940-) "Half Dome" Silkscreen. The Yosemite Valley is one of his favorite places. Its gentle meadows, meandering Merced River, granite monolithic walls, deep forests and magnificent waterfalls make it a place of solitude and renewal. Towering above all of this splendor is one of nature's great superlatives, "Half Dome". The Sierra granite, forming a near perfect dome has calved half of it's bulk onto thin air. What remains is, sheer, smooth, age stained rock. On clear evenings the setting sun sets Half Dome ablaze and as time ticks by "Alpen Glow" dampens the fire to ember and finally deep purple ushers in the night. He has pictured the Yosemite Valley as it would have appeared at he conclusion of the last great Ice Age. The forests have not returned because the Valley floor is still covered by the receding glacier's run off lake. Today all that is left of that vase lake is a small pond at the far end of the valley called Mirror Lake, which will become a meadow within our lifetime.
