        Nov. 23, 2023

Portrait of the painter Cornelis Schut

        Est: €1,500 - €3,000

Oil on canvas 29.5x24.5 cm. Framed The painting bears in the top right-hand corner a coat of arms and a barely legible inscription: "CORNELIS SCHUT / (...) FIGURAE / (...) ANTWERPAE / AETATIS SUAE 46." A portrait of the painter Cornelis Schut (Antwerp, 1597 - 1655), a pupil of Rubens, can undoubtedly be recognized in this painting, not only because of the inscription on the canvas but also thanks to the engraving made by Lucas Vosterman around 1645 from a drawing by Anton Van Dyck. The composition of the print is faithfully reproduced in the canvas, except for a reduction in the lower part. It is worth noting that a sanguine drawing is catalogued at the Fundacion Goya en Aragon that, along with others, is part of a series executed by Goya around 1798-1799 and intended to be engraved by his friend Juan Agustín Ceán Bermúdez for the Historical Dictionary of the Most Illustrious Professors of Fine Arts of Spain. It is also worth noting that, as in our painting, the necklace worn by the painter can be recognized in Goya's drawing, which is absent in Vosterman's engraving.

        Nov. 20, 2023

        Cornelis Schut I, 1597 Antwerp – 1655 , ALLEGORY OF AUTUMN

        Est: €12,000 - €24,000

The painting is designed in a pronounced landscape format. A triumphal chariot drawn by lions is shown in a clear view from below. Putti cavort around the animals. Some carry a garland bulging with ripe fruit and cornucopias. The busy chaos is characterized by falling fruit, waving bows and moving angel figures. The painting was probably planned to furnish a castle. The Flemish Baroque painter Cornelis Schut I was master of the Guild of St. Luke and was inspired by Rubens. However, he developed his own style through compositions that captivated with their formal contrasts and slightly different colors. He concentrated primarily on working on altarpieces, but themes with allegorical representations can also be found in his oeuvre. The painting is listed in the RKD under number 0000022596 as an original by Cornelis Schut I. Created numerous altarpieces for Belgian and Cologne churches, as well as historical and allegorical depictions. His main works include the “Assumption of the Virgin Mary” in the dome of the Frauenkirche in Antwerp (1647), “The Martyrdom of Saint Gerion” (around 1655) in Cologne, and the “Triumph of Time” in the Kunsthistorisches Museum Vienna. Initially under the influence of Rubens, he largely freed himself from his style in favor of personal expression. His centerpieces for flower wreaths by Daniel Seghers are also well known. Oil on canvas, 122x189cm Provenance: Private collection Vienna. Confiscated by US occupying soldiers in Vienna in 1945. 1945-1995 Private collection Walter Dimitri, Ellenworth (South Dakota/USA). Cornelis Schut (Dutch, 1597 - 1655), "Sea Battle with Gods and Women," unsigned, etching on paper, label from Folio Fine Arts in London with identifying information, measures 8.50 x 12.50 inches to the matt opening, overall 14.50 x 19 inches framed. Mond, London, 1867-1830 (L.2813a) Sotheby's, London, 06.11.1981, lot 90, as after P. P. Rubens Jean-Paul Meulemeester, Brussels, inv. no. 481f, 26.1.1982, as Gaspar de Crayer Private collection Heverlee On January 27, 1635, the Joyous Entry of Infant Ferdinand into Ghent takes place. Cornelis Schut is commissioned to provide the triumphal arch for Ferdinand with several scenes in his honour. On this 'Arcus Ferdinandi' his arrival in Cologne was depicted as the last scene of his journey. The painting, currently in the collection of the Museum Bijloke (inv. 712), depicts the moment on which Ferdinand is met on the banks of the Rhine by Ferdinand of Bavaria, the Archbishop of Cologne. After the festivities, Cornelis Schut was commissioned by the city council to document the public decorations in a luxurious publication with illustrations. Prudens van Duyse's transcriptions of the archival documents concerning this project testify that the entire project was a painstakingly and costly project for the artist.² The book 'Serenissimi Principis Ferdinandi, Hispaniarum Infantis..' was published by Jan Meurs (act. 1620-1647) in Antwerp, the Jesuit Willem van der Beken (1608-83) provided the laudatory texts on Infant Ferdinand, and several engravers were responsible for cutting the designs including Pieter de Jode II (1606-ca. 1674). The latter engraved plate number 11 illustrating the reception of Ferdinand by the Archbishop of Cologne. Prof. Em. Hans Vlieghe explains that this drawing is a preliminary design by Cornelis Schut as a reduction of the painting to instruct the engraver. Vlieghe identified another similar ’modello’ with grid lines for the ‘Supplication of Belgica’ in the collection of the National Gallery of Scotland (inv. 2882) in Edinburgh.³ In addition, Sarah van Ooteghem identified a similar preliminary design by Schut after the painting by Gaspard de Crayer 'Charles V crowned emperor by Clement VII' in the collection of the KBR (inv. S.V. 84466).⁴ Lastly, Vlieghe pointed to another gridded design in the Albertina for the lost painting 'Cardinal-Infant crosses the Alps' (inv. 8911). He describes this sheet - very similar in style and execution to the present drawing - as a design for the Ghent city council that was shown before the final execution of the painting.⁵ Although Gertrude Wilmers – in a brief description of the present drawing in her oeuvre catalogue on Cornelis Schut - attributes this drawing of museal quality to engraver Pieter de Jode II, the similarities with the other modelli argue for an attribution to the master himself who - according to the archives - was burdened with the task of supplying the designs for the engravers. We are grateful to Prof. Em. Hans Vlieghe for sharing his interpretation of the attribution and pointing to the relevant literature. Provenance: François Renaud, Paris, ca. 1776 (L.1042) Graaf M. Von Fries, Vienne, 1777-1788 (L.2903) W. Mellish?, Londres, ca. 1820 (L.2903) R.L.

Provenienz: Privatsammlung Wien. 1945 von US-Besatzungssoldaten in Wien beschlagnahmt. 1945-1995 Privatsammlung Walter Dimitri, Ellenworth (South Dakota/USA). Zeitweilig bei der Society of Liberal Arts Joslyn Memorial, Omaha, als Leihgabe unter der Nr. 356.1950. Auktion Dorotheum Wien, 20.03.1995, Lot 104. Very rare probably only one Contre epreuve of this etching. Explanation contre-epreuve : When you have printed an engraving g for the first time, the engraver/printer can lay another paper on the wet ink engraving and press it once again. Now you've got the engraving in reverse like the original copperplate or drawing. He can now see where he can make changes in the plate if necessary. There are only one or a few contre-epreuves of a print made and therefore very rare. In excellent condition, very dark impression on laid paper with margins.

122 cm x 190 cm. Rahmen. Dieses Gemälde ist vom RKD in Den Haag als Original von Cornelis Schut (I) dokumentiert (Abb.-Nr. 0000022596). Est: €35,000 - €45,000

CORNELIS SCHUT III, the young (Antwerp, 1597- Seville, 1655). "Portrait of Julian Rovereto", 1664. Oil on canvas. Relined. Presents inscription on the identity of the character located in the letters arranged on the table. Dated in the central right area. Measurements: 220 x 141 cm; 234 x 157,5 cm (frame). The author of this work follows the classic parameters of the official portrait of the 17th century. To do so, he arranges the figure standing in the center of the composition, with regal bearing, looking at the viewer and demonstrating his social notoriety in a subtle but evident way. For this reason the protagonist is dressed in black, a color that symbolized wealth in the Spanish Baroque court. On his costume some delicate embroideries make up the sleeves and the collar of his blouse, which stands out for the transparency that allows to intuit the throat of the protagonist, in a display of technical mastery of the painter. In his left hand he holds a wide-brimmed hat and a red handkerchief, while in his right he carries a letter in harmony with the letters that are arranged on the table, which allow us to know the identity of the protagonist of the scene, Julian Rovereto and the location to which they have been addressed, Cadiz. During that time, mid-seventeenth century, Seville lost relevance in terms of foreign trade management, although the contracting house was still located in Seville, Cadiz was the most important port, which led to the transfer of officials and relevant characters to the city. As for the compositional arrangement of the work it is interesting to note how the author builds the floor in perspective to provide a greater specialty, or for example the use of the traditional red curtain that combines with an open space to a misty landscape that marks the sunrise. According to the study carried out by the Nicolás Cortés Gallery "this portrait by Julián Rovereto reflects the assimilation of certain portraits by his contemporary Murillo such as Portrait of Don Iñigo Melchor Fernández de Velasco in the Louvre or portrait of a gentleman from the Lowe Art Museum of the University of Miami". Cornelis Schut III belonged to a family of painters, in fact, his uncle, also a painter, had the same name. The young Cornelis moved to Spain during his youth, together with his father, who was a military engineer. Both settled in the city of Seville, known at the time as one of the most prolific ports in the world. His painting was closely linked to the work of Murillo, and he was also one of the founders, together with the master, of the Sevillian school, which he presided over for four years (1670-1674).
