Notice: 28 août 1953, à la suite d’une L.A.S. de Mathilde Kottmann : « Je vous remercie de cœur au nom de tous du grand don que vous nous faites en nous faisant parvenir votre si belle revue ! »… – 2 janvier 1955, il est désolé de n’avoir pas envoyé les « fragments d’œuvres philosophiques » demandés : « J’étais si fatigué et devais élaborer le discours sur le problème de la paix à notre époque pour Oslo »… – 28 avril 1958, carte postale représentant le débarcadère de l’hôpital, avec remerciements pour Plaisir de France, « que je lis toujours avec grand intérêt et profit »… – 14 décembre 1960, il est touché par l’article de Quéant [sur A l’orée de la forêt vierge. Ma vie et mes pensées] : « Je n’avais aucune envie d’écrire mon autobiographie. D’autres travaux m’occupaient »… Il explique comment son éditeur « tyran » et deux médecins serviables l’ont convaincu d’écrire le livre. Alors « je me suis rendu compte, qu’il me donnait l’occasion de parler des études qui m’occupaient et des pensées philosophiques et religieuses qui me tenaient à cœur. Zus. 2 S. auf 1 Blatt. Mit dem frankiertem Umschlag. Gr. 4to. Lambarene (Gabun) 16.X.1958. Der Freiburger Verleger Franz Witte hatte bei Albert Schweitzer angefragt, ob dieser einen Beitrag für Wittes neue Jugendzeitschrift "Staffette" liefern könne. Zunächst antwortet Mathilde Kottmann, Pflegerin im Urwald-Hospital in Lambarene und Schweitzers wichtigste Assistentin, im Auftrag des Arztes: "... Dr. Albert Schweitzer kann Ihnen nicht selber so antworten wie er es gerne möchte. Sein Leben ist immer noch sehr erfüllt mit Arbeit und Aufgaben, die schwer lasten ... Er muss die müden Augen und die schmerzhafte Hand schonen und sieht sich seit langen schon gezwungen, keine Beiträge mehr geben zu können, da ihm auch die Zeit fehlt sich den Arbeiten zu widmen, die schon jahrelang in Vorbereitung sind ... Ihre Zeitschrift beeindruckt ihn. Wie schön wäre es, wenn wir hier, für unsere afrikanische Jugend angepasst, gleichwertiges bieten könnten! ...". - Am folgenden Tag fügt Albert Schweitzer selbst, ebenfalls eigenhändig, einen halbseitigen Nachtrag hinzu. "... Auch ich, wie viele ältere Knaben, die Ihnen über die Staffette schreiben, habe Freude an ihr. Aber ich darf das nicht langer ausführen, weil obwohl die Abendglocke des Spitals eben ertönte, für mich die Arbeit noch lange [nicht] zu Ende ist und schreiben meiner armen Schreibkrampfhand Beschwerden macht. Gerne möchte ich der Staffel auch etwas zum Drucken senden. Aber daran ist vorläufig nicht zu denken ... Aber vielleicht trifft es sich einmal, dass ich doch etwas beisteuern kann ...". - Das Beisammensein beider Briefe auf einem Blatt zeigt besonders deutlich das Kuriosum, dass die Helferin ihre Handschrift nahezu hundertprozentig der ihres verehrten Chefs angeglichen hat. - Minimale Randläsuren.

Finanziert wurde der Bau durch das Preisgeld, welches ihm für den Friedensnobelpreis von 1952 zugesprochen wurde. Rückseitig mit eigenhändiger Nachschrift an Dr. Carlos Adler in Buenos Aires zu der Nachricht eines Freundes Namens Hugó (Gerdes?), welcher sich vom 29. September bis 9. SCHWEITZER ALBERT: (1875-1965) SCHWEITZER ALBERT: (1875-1965) Alsatian theologian, musician, philosopher & physician, Nobel Peace Prize winner 1952. A highly unusual signed ink handprint of Albert Schweitzers right hand on a sheet of the pale blue printed stationery of chirologist Maia Noel, signed (Albert Schweitzer) by Schweitzer and dated 22nd May 1965 in his hand. The signature and date have faded considerably, although the handprint remains bold with many of the lines of the palm, fingers and thumb clearly visible. Laid down to card and with some light overall wrinkling, G Maia Noel (or Adda Nary) had chirology practices in Paris and Saint-Tropez where the character and the future of a person was studied through the morpho-psychological examination of their handprint.

Schweitzer declares that his correspondent has pleased him, and thanks her for a photograph of a 'gorgeous painting' of Johann Sebastian Bach which he didn't have previously and is exactly what he requires for a thematic catalogue. Schweitzer continues to recall an anecdote, 'When I was writing my Bach around 1903-6, I asked the Peters [publishing] House to make their Bach edition available to me (i.e. the works of Bach as they appeared with Peters) so that I could list the works in my book…..with the same numbers that Peters used, which is certainly not without interest for the publisher. Unfortunately, they didn't agree to this, which I always regret'. Some light creasing to the edges, and two former file holes and small tears to the left edge, professionally restored. Der hölzerne Schaft partiell mit (defektem) Messingdraht umwickelt und mit Messingbeschlägen an beiden Enden. Eisenteile flugrostig und verschmutzt. Länge 81,5 cm. Zwei afrikanische Speere um 1900. Leicht unterschiedliche, zweischneidige Eisenspitzen an konischen Tüllen. Die beiden langen Holzschäfte jeweils der Länge nach kanneliert. Spitzen flugrostig und verschmutzt. Länge 173 bzw. 185,5 cm. Schild der Massai um 1900. Hochovaler Schild aus dickem Leder, mit eingebundenem, hölzernem Rahmen. Auf der rs. vertikale Holzstange mit ausgearbeitetem Tragegriff. Leder stark wellig verzogen und verschmutzt, Rahmen an der Oberseite gebrochen. Höhe 85 cm. Provenance: Diese drei Objekte stammen aus Albert Schweitzers Haus im Schwarzwald, in dem er wohnte, wenn er sich in Europa und nicht in Lambarene aufhielt. Seine dortige ethnologische Sammlung wurde von seiner Tochter an Sammler verkauft und 2009 durch den heutigen Einlieferer von einem der Sammler erworben. Condition: II -

Dating 1940's-50's there are many multiple page letters in French written by and signed by Schweitzer as well as Secretarially signed letters and notes.Other Ephemera is included as well. Many of the pages are written on tissue like letterhead, so edges are fraying and fragile. Needs to be examined and transcribed for maximum interest but this seems to be a very important group withmedical reference throughout.

Nobel Peace Prize winner ALBERT SCHWEITZER (1875-1965), estate from the provenance of his secretary EMMY MARTIN with around 70 letters and 25 postcards, 7 notebooks, partly signed photos or prints and stamps, a bust of Schweitzer by Prof. Fritz Behn, the correspondence with the artist about the commissioning of a statue in Günsbach, to be erected after his death, the record with his Nobel Lecture from 1954 Part I in German edition, records with the works of Johann Sebastian Bach played by Schweitzer, books and more. The letters and postcards included i.a.: Numerous letters to Emmy Martin (mostly in French), including his declaration of sole ownership of all of his letters and manuscripts that Mrs. Emmy Martin owns (1931) and regarding contributions to Emmy Martin (1933), some letters to Dr. Hans Martin, correspondence with Berta Schleicher (especially postcards), of whom there is also a duplicate of her speech on the 90th birthday of Albert Schweitzer. The estate also includes a report by Schweitzer about his encounter with Rudolf Steiner in 1922 and his 1921 article about Rosa Luxemburg's thoughts in prison. It is worth mentioning the copy of a letter in French to Queen Elizabeth II. The estate contains numerous pictures that depict Albert Schweitzer's life in Lambarene with the locals and his colleagues. Other photos show him writing his writings, as a thinker or playing the organ, and with his colleague Emmy Martin, often with dedications. Some photos show him meeting Schopenhauer, Queen Elisabeth of Belgium or the Japanese doctor Dr. Isao Takahashi. Recordings in Frankfurt (Goethe Prize) are also available. A woman Erica Anderson from New York is mentioned as a photographer on the back of some pictures. Also included a membership card for the Albert Schweitzer Association with Emmy Martin as an honorary member. We ask you to inspect this estate in detail.

Longue lettre dans laquelle le docteur, après avoir donné sommairement des nouvelles de sa santé, décrit ses activités du village hôpital de Lambaréné ; il a bien regardé le village des lépreux pendant quelques jours : Éliane se développe bien avec Eli comme conseiller et assistant à ses côtés, et le successeur de sa chère doctoresse ; le chirurgien danois, M. Christensen, arrivera avec sa femme, infirmière, en septembre ; aussi est-il satisfait des progrès de Friedman et du Dr. Lindner...
