Patrick Scott HRHA (1921-2014) Gold Painting 486 Tempera, gold leaf and silver leaf on canvas, 122 x 122cm (48 x 48) Signed and inscribed verso Although aspects of Japanese and Chinese culture had long been important to Patrick Scott, he did not travel to the Orient until 1984. His admiration for the Japanese flag was well known. Its elegant simplicity was characteristic of his own design aesthetic and, as he once put it: “When I sit down to work, I usually draw a circle.” In the 1950s, his friendship with the American painter Morris Graves, who lived in Ireland for a time, focussed his interest in the East and chimed with his instinct for Zen-like clarity. ? When he finally ventured East, the spur was his involvement with Kilkenny Design Workshops, who were considering the possibility of taking on Chinese gold-smithing apprentices. His time in China and Japan was immensely rewarding, not least in enhancing his interest in landscape. Most obviously, he devised his own distinctive take on the dramatic limestone mountains around Guilin, a timeless source of fascination for Chinese artists. In fact, the Chinese term for landscape painting, “shan shui hua”, translates as something like “mountain water painting”. ?Less obviously, the impact of his travels is evident in this work. In the late 1970s he had begun, very fruitfully, to explore the use of triangular or wedge-shaped forms rather than circles, and here he combines this hard geometry with the spirit of landscape. The three angled incursions into the textured linen, grounded by a single horizontal line, animate diagonal energies and subtly suggest layers of masses (perhaps mountains) and reflections, all with the most minimal means. ?Born in Kilbritten, Co Cork, Scott initially studied architecture and worked for the groundbreaking modernist practice of Michael Scott, branching out over time into many aspects of design. All the while, however, he nurtured the ambition to paint full-time, an aim encouraged through his involvement with the White Stag group. By the 1960s, having gained national and international recognition, he was in a position to devote himself primarily to art. Represented by Taylor Galleries, he was the subject of many survey exhibitions and his work is included in numerous public and private collections. Aidan Dunne, April 2024

Patrick Scott HRHA (1921-2014) CHINESE LANDSCAPE, 1986 tempera and gold leaf; (unframed) signed, titled, numbered [6.86] and with Taylor Galleries label on reverse h:48  w:48 in. Provenance: Taylor Galleries, Dublin; Pyms Gallery, London; Private collection Exhibited: 'Patrick Scott - Recent Work', Taylor Galleries, Dublin, June 1986 Literature: Walker, Dorothy, Patrick Scott - Recent Work', Irish Arts Review, Volume 3. No. 2, Summer, 1986, pp.41-44 (illustrated) In the winter of 1984/85 Patrick Scott travelled to China for the first time. This trip had a profound effect on the artist's work and the resulting paintings of Chinese landscapes were exhibited at the Taylor Galleries in a show titled 'Patrick Scott - Recent Work' in June 1986. The present work was among those shown. In her extensive review of the exhibition for the Irish Arts Review (Summer, 1986) Dorothy Walker wrote: "These paintings are a perfect example of his genius in extracting the poetic quick from an extremely complex visual reality - the Chinese mountains and their well-known exuberant forms, so familiar from traditional Chinese painting - and expressing this complexity in his own absolutely personal schematic terms. Thus the mountains are indicated in a purely linear form, with Scott's usual thinned-white acrylic, but this linear treatment fully suggests the encompassing volumes of these unusual volcanic rock formations. The rocks are hollow and, on the inside, are like great lofty cathedrals. It is Scott's achievement to be able to convey this architectural sense of the mountains by Irish traditional linear means, while his gold-leaf 'sun', delimiting the scale of the landscape and of the picture, gives a Japanese gloss to the unmistakably Chinese scene, like a Chinese landscape as seen by a Japanese painter." Scott was born in Kilbrittain in Co. Cork and trained as an architect working for 15 years from 1945 with Michael Scott's practice which would later become Scott, Tallon, Walker. He also worked as a leading graphic designer for Signa Design Consultancy, set up by fellow White Stag member, Louis le Brocquy and Michael Scott while at the same time developing his own visual language. After representing Ireland at the XXX Venice Biennale and winning a National Prize at the Guggenheim International Award in 1960, Scott dedicated himself fulltime to his art. From the 1950s to 1970s his work was among Irish art shown on the international stage in Europe and the United States, among them The Irish Imagination exhibitions 1959-71. The breadth of his practice is impressive; from painting, sculpture and print, to textile design, tapestry, furniture and mosaic, each communicating through a precise and economic visual language a distinctly modern vision. Much of his work in the public domain formed part of the fabric of Irish life in discreet yet impactful ways. The mosaics at Busáras in Dublin were designed by Scott while the distinctive black and orange livery for the CIE train interiors were also his work. Scott's first retrospective - a touring exhibition - took place at the Douglas Hyde Gallery in 1981 while a major monographic exhibition took place at Dublin City Gallery the Hugh Lane in 2002. He was elected a Saoi of Aosdána by President Mary McAleese in 2007. Scott died aged 93 a day before a major retrospective on his life - Image Space Light - opened at the Irish Museum of Modern Art (IMMA) and VISUAL Centre for Contemporary Art Carlow. An example from the Chinese landscape series from 1986 can be found in the collection of IMMA (1485 FD). Adelle Hughes, November 2023

Patrick Scott HRHA (1921-2014) TANGRAM IV, 2005

            Est: €2,500 - €3,500

Patrick Scott HRHA (1921-2014) TANGRAM IV, 2005 carborundum and gold leaf; (artist's proof from edition of 75) signed and dated lower right; inscribed [A/P] lower left h:18.50  w:24.50 in. Sheet size, 24 by 31.5in. The tangram is a dissection puzzle consisting of seven flat shapes, called tans, which are put together to form shapes. These puzzles have been the object of interest for artists and designers who have used the principles of the game to sharpen the powers of observation through the discovery of resemblances between geometric and natural forms and as a tool for abstraction. The tangram is thought to have been invented in China during the Song Dynasty and later introduced to Europe by trading ships in the early 19th century.

Provenance: Commissioned by McGarry Ní Éanaigh for the s3 building, Leopardstown, County Dublin in 1997 According to records relating to this commission, Scott spent a great deal of time finding "the right balance between the amount of each colour that was going to be used and where the colours selected would be within the wall hanging … the green in the lower part of the wall hanging represents the ground, the blue the sky." The s3 building in Leopardstown, County Dublin - for which the present work was commissioned - won an Architecture Association of Ireland award in 1998. The entire proceeds including buyer's premium of the sale of this lot will be donated to the Irish Red Cross Ukraine Appeal, without fees, courtesy of the owner, s3 Connected Health and Whyte's.

Provenance: Whyte's, 17 September 2002, lot 84; Private collection Exhibited: IELA, 1960, catalogue no. 84; 'Patrick Scott: An Exhibition of Recent Paintings', Dawson Gallery, Dublin, February to March 1961, catalogue no. 15 In many ways 1960 was a seminal year for Scott. He was involved in two major international art events, representing Ireland at the Venice Biennale with a group of eighteen works, and participating along with four other Irish artists (Nano Reid, Louis le Brocquy, Dan O'Neill and Richard Kingston) in the invitation-only Guggenheim International Award in New York, where he won the National Award. Dr Yvonne Scott has identified the artist's duel concerns at this time: registering both the terrestrial environment (as evidenced in the series of bog paintings which he had just begun), and the extra-terrestrial environment, 'reflecting the increasing general interest in rocket-age science from the late 1950s'. (1) These works with their 'stellar explosions' of white paint - split, dripped and sprayed - anticipate the Device series of 1962-64 which were in turn painted in reaction to the testing of H-Bombs (devices) at this time.
