In this interior of gothic church Hyppolyte Sebron combines the conscientious study of the architectural details with the flavor of sacred print. It was typical of this pictorial genre of ecclesiastical interiors to reproduce real temples, but he also allowed himself certain liberties for aesthetic purposes. Magnificent gothic ribs culminate a space defined by a wide staircase with iron balustrade, by which the religious descend slowly. The lighting is balanced, alternating areas of half-light and lighter areas, favoring a rhythmic play that accentuates the naturalistic sensation of the space. This careful atmospheric study confers to the image, in conjunction with the careful detail and the meticulous brushstroke, realism and monumentality in the scene. Some elements of the construction, such as the floor slabs, the pilasters and columns, the architraves and the ribs of the vault, are repeated from the foreground to the back of the stage, gradually decreasing in size and losing chromatic intensity. Ultimately, the faithful pray at the foot of a baroque chapel. Hippolyte Sebron was a leading French academic painter and key collaborator of Louis Daguerre, whose stay in Louisiana between 1849 and 1855 transformed regional landscape painting through a refined technique and masterful use of lighting effects. He also focused his painting on the realization of church interiors. Trained at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris, Sebron was noted for his ability to execute monumental and precise canvases, such as his famous views of the Mississippi and Niagara Falls, which functioned as visual chronicles of American expansion. His legacy lies in having been one of the first to capture the distinctive atmosphere of the Louisiana swamps and to introduce the sophistication of large European formats and dramatic chiaroscuro into American art, decisively influencing subsequent generations of local landscape painters before his ultimate return to France.

A pupil of Louis Daguerre, the diorama, architecture and view painter Hippolyte Sebron was in America between 1849 and 1855, visiting New York and Louisiana. Another winter view of Niagara by Sebron, with Native Americans hunting ('Chutes du Niagara en hiver', 1857) is in the Musée des Beaux-Arts, Rouen (880.2.2), and his 'Table Rock, Niagara' is in the Sigmund Samuel Gallery of Canada in the Royal Ontario Museum, Toronto. Two fine views of Niagara Falls were published as a pair of large lithographs by Goupil, Paris in 1852.

After studying at the Ecole des Beaux Arts in Paris, French painter and photographer Hippolyte Victor Sebron (1801-1879) worked as a decorative painter before becoming a student of Léon Cogniet. Inspired by his works in theater décor, Sebron staged many dioramas under the direction of Louis Daguerre. Despite later parting with Daguerre, dioramas have a profound influence on his later landscapes and photographs. His works did not follow the conventional nineteenth century emphasis on emotion, instead he focused on grand scope and intricate detail. With a growing reputation, Sebron executed commissions for wealthy and important patrons such as the King Louis-Phillippe I of France, the King Leopold II of Belgium and the King Guillaume II of the Netherlands, and after exhibiting in Bruxelles in 1842, he received the Order of Leopold. As seen through his diverse landscapes, Sebron was an avid traveler, notably in Italy, England, Spain and North America. Sebron’s works were unique as they mixed a European academic style with foreign landscapes. Dated 1857, this works depicts an interior view of the Saint Paul Church in Antwerp, recognizable through the baroque confessionals and the twisted marble columns. Sebron also included two small versions of the church’s paintings by Peter Paul Rubens: The Disputation of the Holy Sacrament and the Flagellation of Christ. He also painted Dominican nuns as the church was originally built by the Dominican Order.

Schaus, 1852.Monumental große, eindrucksvolle Darstellung der berühmten amerikanischen Hufeisenfälle zwischen dem Bundesstaat New York in den Vereinigten Staaten und der kanadischen Provinz Ontario. Der in Caudebec-en-Caux im Département Seine-Maritime geborene Maler und Graphiker Hippolyte Victor Valentin Sebron (1801-1879) war berühmt für seine Landschaftsgemälde, Porträts und Pastelle, aber auch in der Fotografie war er als Schüler Louis Daguerres tätig. So gehört seine Darstellung der Niagarafälle, von denen es zwei in diesem Großformat gibt, zu den realistischsten Ansichten des 19. Jahrhundert, hatte Sebron doch die Fälle auf einer seiner zahlreichen Reisen selbst besucht und gezeichnet. Zahlreiche Ausstellungen seiner Werke fanden in Paris und New York statt. Die Niagara-Gemälde entstanden im Jahre 1850, der grandiose Stich dann schon zwei Jahre darauf. Stecher war der Schweizer Graphiker Friedrich Salathé (1793-1858). Dargestellt ist der Hufeisenfall unter einem dräuenden Gewitterhimmel, von dem sich die weiße Gischt, hier mit kraftvollem Deckweiß gehöht, abhebt. Im Hintergrund links in der Ferne ein paar Gebäude, der Beobachtungs-Rundturm, im Vordergrund mehrere hübsche flanierende Staffage-Figuren mit einer Kutsche, Holzarbeitern etc. Besonders schön ist die Darstellung der an der "Rim", am Abhang entstehenden starken Winde des Wasserfalls, die den in die Tiefe schauenden, staundenen Flaneuren die Halstücher hochwehen und die Hüte fast fortwehen lässt. Der Künstler Sebron selbst urteilte über seine Kenntnis des Amerikanischen Kontinents und seiner Sehenswürdigkeiten, die er in seinen Gemälden festhielt, sie sei "le plus complet que jamais un artiste ait accompli dans ce pays". Das Gemälde wurde von dem englischen Lord Carlisle in New York erworben. – Bildträgerkarton gebräunt, mit kleinen Wellen- und Knickspuren, kaum fleckig, teilweise sehr virtuos, teilweise aber auch minutiös mit feinster Gouache koloriert. Versand nur ohne Glas und Rahmen. Der einstige historische goldverzierte Rahmen ist auf Anfrage vom Einlieferer erhältlich.

He traveled extensively, visiting Italy, Spain, Portugal, and North Africa. Following the Revolution of 1848, Sebron embarked for North America, spending six years traveling through Canada and the United States, with sojourns in New York and Louisiana. The present work romanticizes life on the Mississippi at the height of the Civil War, depicting steamboats traversing a broad expanse of the river at sunset. It presents a fascinating slice of Southern life as seen through the lense of a European visitor, one that in a few short but tumultuous years would change irrevocably. C

HIPPOLYTE VICTOR VALENTIN SEBRON (FRENCH 1801-1879), "View of a Gothic Cathedral," oil on canvas, 125 x 125 cm (49 1/4 x 49 1/4 in.). Famous for his mid-century paintings of America from his travels (such as "Winter View of Broadway at Spring Street in New York" from 1855, and "Niagara Falls from the Canadian Side," circa 1852), Hippolyte Sebron was well known as a painter of detailed architectual scenes of French cathedrals, such as this large and impressive work.
