Perhaps the greatest love story of the ancient world, the tale of Cupid and Psyche, symbolizing the power of love and its ability to shape the soul, has provided boundless inspiration for artists across the ages. Trained in the academic style at the École des Beaux-Arts, Guillaume Seignac specialized in allegorical subjects, approaching the present work as part of a broader Platonic tradition, highlighting the concept of love (Cupid) shaping the self (Psyche) instead of pushing the baser sexual aspects of the myth to the forefront. Overtly erotic representations were favored in the earlier Rococo period, with the central figures often depicted as two young and beautiful people of the same age. Seignac avoids that conception entirely in this iteration, going so far as to abstain from excessive use of reds and pinks, the colors of passion, in favor of a cooler, less suggestive palette. Seignac studied under the master academician William-Adolphe Bouguereau from 1889 to 1895, which all but guarantees a familiarity with Bouguereau's Amour et Psyché from 1890. Bouguereau's composition, showing the central figures both as winged babies in a pastel cloudscape, emphasized the innocence of the figures at an early point in the story, after they have fallen into innocent true love, but before the wrath of Venus befalls them; while also presenting a more restrained appeal to the Salon, where contemporary Victorian sensibilities more strongly favored the chaste. Bouguereau's influence on his pupil is evident, but Seignac was not without his own strengths and individualism – the classical curriculum at the École introduced him to the work of Phidias, a legendary master sculptor from antiquity, best known for his exquisite rendering of drapery in marble. Displaying the full strength of his education, and perhaps in purposeful juxtaposition with Bouguereau, a titan of nudity renowned for his rendering of soft alabaster skin, Seignac expressed the human form not by laying it bare, but by revealing it from within and beneath an inspired use of drapery. This method of showing the sensual curvature of the female form without overt nudity allowed him a broad commercial appeal during his lifetime. HID01801242017

Seignac received his training at the Academy Julian in Paris, where he spent the years 1889 through 1890 and 1894 through 1895. His teachers, staunch supporters of the Academic tradition, included Tony Robert-Fleury, a noted history and genre artist; Gabriel Ferrier, who had been awarded the Prix de Rome in 1872 and was noted as a talented artist who possessed much charm and sincerity; and William Adolph Bouguereau, a symbol of academic art in France, winner of the Prix de Rome and one of the most successful French painters. All had received the awards and honors of the Salon and were members of the Legion of Honor. Seignac began exhibiting at the Salon in 1897 and did so almost yearly until his death in 1924. He was elected a member of the Society of French artists in 1901 and that same year was also appointed an Officer of the French Academy. The artist also received an Honorable Mention at the Salon of 1900 and a Third Class medal in 1903. In 1906 Seignac was appointed to the post of Officer of Public Instruction in Art.

The mischievous antics of Cupid had long been a popular pictorial subject and found a receptive audience in late nineteenth-century France. Known for his ability to cause even the most powerful god or man to succumb to uncontrollable desire, Cupid, in the present work, is rendered harmless by his mother, the goddess Venus, who lovingly embraces him while snatching away his bow and arrows. Seignac, skillfully depicts Cupid as a sweet, winsome boy enjoying the attentions of his mother; a sharp contrast to the cruel torment of heartbreak he is capable of inflicting. Guillaume Seignac forged a successful career as a painter of Classical antiquity that was strongly influenced by the example of William Bouguereau, the preeminent French Academic painter of the last quarter of the nineteenth century. A product of the Académie Julian in Paris, Seignac trained directly with Bouguereau, as well as his like-minded colleagues Tony Robert-Fleury and Gabriel Ferrier, who emphasized impeccable draftsmanship and focused on idealized beauty both in their own work and their teaching. In Disarming Cupid, we see the master return to a favored motif in order to satisfy his eager clientele. HID04901242017
