GENRYUSAI SEIYA: A FINE BRONZE AND ROOTWOOD OKIMONO OF A KESTREL ON A TREE STUMP Japan, Meiji period (1868-1912) Superbly cast, this raptor is perched on a separately carved wood base in the shape of a tall tree stump. The bird is detailed with intricately incised plumage, its wings spread as the kestrel prepares to take flight. The eyes, inlaid in shakudo with gilt rings, are striking, while the elegantly curved beak adds to the bird's lifelike presence. The underside is signed within a square reserve SEIYA chu [cast by Genryusai Seiya]. HEIGHT (total) 39 cm WEIGHT (total) 5 kg Condition: Good condition with old wear. The legs are re-enforced, now firmly mounted to the base. Two losses to the edges of the wings. Genryusai Seiya was a master craftsman known for leading a workshop that specialized in high-quality export wares. His production included human genre figures, vases, and exotic animal bronzes, likely influenced by the opening of the Tokyo Zoological Gardens in 1882. This piece is a brilliant example of Seiya's expertise in creating naturalistic bronze models of animals. SEIYA: A LARGE BRONZE OKIMONO OF TWO PEACOCKS ON A BURLWOOD STUMP Workshop of Genryusai Seiya, sealed Seiya chu Japan, Meiji period (1868-1912) Each bronze cast separately, naturalistically modeled as a peacock and a peahen mounted together on a burlwood base. The peacock is positioned higher, its long tail feathers finely chiseled and flowing downward, while the peahen stands below, gazing upward toward its mate. Both are rendered with great attention to detail, from the subtle texture of the plumage to the sharply defined talons gripping the wood. Sealed underneath the larger peacock within a rectangular cartouche SEIYA chu [cast by Seiya]. HEIGHT 85.5 cm WEIGHT 29.4 kg Condition: Good condition with typical wear. The bronze with manufacturing irregularities, losses to one beak, crest and to the tips of the feathers. The wood with natural flaws and age cracks. Overall presenting very well. GENRYUSAI SEIYA: A TIGER AND BOAR BRONZE By Genryusai Seiya, signed Dai Nihon Genryusai Seiya Japan, Meiji period (1868-1912) The large and massive statue captures the rare moment, when a tiger dares to attack a wild boar from the back. Typically, both animals avoid each other, as they are physically more or less equal combatants. Impressed seal mark “Dai Nihon Genryusai Seiya” to base. Note the fine detail to the fur of both animals, including various types of incision and relief work. LENGTH 55 cm WEIGHT 9.9 kg Condition: Excellent condition with some wear, mostly to base of feet, and very minor traces of use. The patina has grown into a deep bronze, almost black color with an unctuous finish.

HEIGHT 51.5 cm WEIGHT 9.8 kg Condition: Excellent condition. The rope is a later replacement. Genryusai Seiya was a master craftsman in charge of a workshop specializing in export wares of the highest quality. He was well known for naturalistic animal bronzes. This bronze model of a sarumawashi is a rare example of his figurative sculpture.

Large bell supported by an oni. Japan, Meiji period (1868-1912). GENRYUSAI SEIYA (active 1868-1912) Patinated bronze. The wooden base of the bell is decorated with elephant heads and the mon of the Tokugawa clan. It has a seal on the back with the inscription "Da Nihon Genryusai Seiya zo". Wooden stand. Measurements: 119 x 54 x 47 cm (set); 7 x 63 x 53 cm (stand). Important Japanese bronze bell with patina martilé, on the sculpture of a standing oni holding it as an atlantean. The seal on the reverse identifies the renowned Genry?sai Seiya, one of the most famous bronze artists of the Meiji era, known for his sculptures of great detail, technical refinement and meticulous execution. His signature is found on some of the most sought-after pieces of the period, many of which were destined for export, especially in the context of the Universal Exhibitions, where Japan projected its art as a sign of modernity without renouncing tradition. The horns, fangs and fearsome facial expression are distinctive elements of the oni in Japanese folklore, and in this patinated bronze sculpture has been skillfully characterized. They are ambiguous creatures, being considered both demonic and protective at the same time. Their feet slightly resemble claws, like hybrids between human and animal. It raises its sturdy arms to support the enormous weight of the bell, on whose wooden base are carved elephant heads and the Mon symbol of the Tokugawa shoguns, the clan that ruled Japan from 1603 until the beginning of the Meiji period in 1868. The inclusion of the mon (heraldic emblem) suggests a possible link to a temple, shrine or high-ranking commission related to the heritage of the former shogunate. Its presence gives the piece an additional political and historical charge, functioning as a symbol of continuity with the feudal past in an era of imperial modernization.

SEIYA: A SUPERB SHAKUDO OKIMONO OF A CROW ON A BRONZE TREE STUMP By Genryusai Seiya, signed Seiya chu Japan, Meiji period (1868-1912) Cast in two sections, naturalistically modeled as a crow (karasu) perched on the stump of a weeping willow exquisitely detailed with hanging branches trailing below, the bird with lowered head, round eyes with gilt-ringed pupils, and sharp claws, the wings and plumage richly incised. Signed at the tree trunk within a rectangular cartouche SEIYA chu [cast by Seiya]. HEIGHT 34.1 cm WEIGHT 4,268 g Condition: Very good condition with minor wear and casting irregularities, few minuscule nicks, the base with light scratches. Meiji metalwork depicting crows is to be considered rare, with only few examples recorded in literature and public collections. In Japan, the crow is a symbol of gratitude and family love. It is also considered the divine messenger of good omens. The Kojiki (713) relates that the crow Yatagarasu guided the mythical founder of Japan, Emperor Jinmu (660-585 BC), on a military campaign to Yamato. Genryusai Seiya was a master craftsman in charge of a workshop specializing in export wares of the highest quality. Production included human genre figures, vases and exotic bronze models of animals probably influenced by the opening of Tokyo Zoological Gardens in 1882. Genryusai Seiya, Sinnender Affe Japan, Tokio, Meiji-Periode (1868-1912), um 1880, im Wachsausschmelzverfahren (cire perdue) gegossene Bronzefigur einer naturalistisch wiedergegebenen Meerkatze (kein Japan-Makak!), die auf dem Boden sitzt und nachdenklich ihren Schwanz betrachtet, psychologisierende Ausdeutung der Gesichtszüge, durch Aufpolieren und Ziselieren detailliert dargestellte Fell- und Hautstruktur, handgeschnitzter Originalsockel zeigt Felsstrukturen und Bambusblätter, wohl einst auf Schwanz eingezapfte Figur eines Insekts fehlend, am Boden Marke Seiya/Seikoku Tsukuru und Tokyo Kuridani, Maße 23 x 35 x 21 cm, G ca. 4,9 kg. Genryusai Seiya, Contemplating Monkey Japan, Tokyo, Meiji period (1868-1912), c. 1880, bronze figure of a naturalistically rendered guenon (no Japan-Makak!), sitting on the ground and contemplating its tail, psychologising interpretation of the facial features, the fur and skin structure depicted in detail by polishing and chasing, the hand-carved original base showing rock structures and bamboo leaves, the figure of an insect probably once attached to the tail missing, marked Seiya/Seikoku Tsukuru and Tokyo Kuridani on the base, dimensions 23 x 35 x 21 cm, weight approx. 4.9 kg.
