    Est: CHF50,000 - CHF80,000

KURT SELIGMANN (Basel 1900–1961 New York City) Nocturne. 1950. Oil on canvas. Signed lower right: Seligmann. 71.5 × 94.6 cm. Provenance: - With Galerie Jacques Benador, Geneva, 1990 (label verso). - With The Mayor Gallery, London (label verso). - Private collection, Switzerland, acquired on 21.6.1994 from the above gallery at Art Basel, thence by descent. “My entire childhood was impregnated by the ancient ideal of the Soldier of Fortune which since the 15th century has left an indelible mark on Basel. The heraldic ensigns, the armor, the halyards, the drapery, the ribbons, all this anachronistic attire was very much alive for me. It seems to me that I always hear, in the depth of my ears, the deafening sound of the enormous drums that are reserved for Carnival Day. Basel, you see, is still and always Holbein, Erasmus, Frobeinus, Melanchton. It is in the culture of my natal city to which my subconscious always travels whenever I begin one of my compositions, whether abstract or imaginative” (Henri Héraut, ‘Artistes d'aujourd'hui: Kurt Seligmann, peintre d'avant-garde’ in Sud, no. 126, Marseille, 15 April1935). ------------------------------------------------- KURT SELIGMANN (Basel 1900–1961 New York) Nocturne. 1950. Öl auf Leinwand. Unten rechts signiert: Seligmann. 71,5 × 94,6 cm. Provenienz: - Galerie Jacques Benador, Genf, 1990 (verso mit Etikett). - The Mayor Gallery, London (verso mit Etikett). April 1935).

    Mar. 23, 2023

    KURT SELIGMANN Les Voyageurs.

    Est: $1,000 - $1,500

KURT SELIGMANN Les Voyageurs. Etching, 1934. 348x291 mm; 13 3/4x11 1/2 inches, full margins. Edition of 90. Printed by Taneur, Paris. Published by Éditions des Chroniques du Jour, Paris. From Les Vagabondages Héraldiques. A very good, richly-inked, proof-like impression of this scarce, early etching, with crisp, partially inky plate edges. Seligmann (1900-1962) was a Swiss-born Surrealist painter, illustrator, printmaker and writer. He is known for his paintings and drawings that explored mythological and spiritual themes. Born in Basel, to a wealthy Jewish family, he studied philosophy in both Basel and at the University of Geneva. During this time, he was exposed to the Dada and Surrealist movements and was significantly influenced by their ideas. In 1924, he moved to Paris and studied painting with Fernand Léger and André Lhote. In 1927, Seligmann was one of the founding members of the Surrealist group in Paris. He was a close friend of André Breton, the leader of the group, and they collaborated on several projects. He also worked with Max Ernst and other leading Surrealists. In 1940, Seligmann moved to New York to escape the Nazi regime, where he continued to create artwork in addition to his writing.

    Est: CHF40,000 - CHF60,000

KURT SELIGMANN (Basel 1900–1961 New York City) Le Beau Chapeau. 1929. Oil on panel. Signed and dated on the reverse of the panel: K. Seligmann / 1929. 81 × 65 cm. Provenance: - D'Arcy Galleries, New York (label on the reverse). - Private collection England, received by descent. Exhibited: Paris 1932, Seligmann, Galerie Jeanne Bucher, 5.–19.2.1932, no. 2 (with ill. on the cover of the invitation card). Literature: Stephan E. Hauser: Kurt Seligmann 1900–1962. Leben und Werk, Basel 1997, p. 78 (with ill. of the invitation card ). "From his manifold attempts, one senses a sincere creative drive, striving for the most adequate formulation of his artistic and psychological experiences, and at the same time they are characterised by significant technical qualities that lend them something solid and reassuring, even though the strange, symbolistic vocabulary of forms is at first alienating. The newer paintings approach a purely abstract style and seek to evoke certain poetic emotions through highly simplified forms that float strangely in an imaginary cosmos"(translated from German, Basler Nachrichten review of Seligmann's first solo exhibition in 1932 at Galerie Jeanne Bucher, Paris). Kurt Seligmann's first solo exhibition took place in 1932 at Galerie Jeanne Bucher in Paris. He was introduced to the gallery by fellow artist Jean Arp, who had already exhibited his Surrealist works and reliefs there. This exhibition was not only decisive for Seligmann's artistic breakthrough, it was also the moment he was accepted by Parisian society as an independent Surrealist artist. Only a handful of works were presented in the exhibition, including the present 'Le beau Chapeau', which is actually depicted on the announcement card of the aforementioned exhibition (Fig. 1). The painting is erroneously dated 1931 in the exhibition catalogue; however, it was actually created in 1929 (dated on the reverse), which means that 'Le beau Chapeau' is one of Seligmann's very first Surrealist paintings. --------------- KURT SELIGMANN (Basel 1900–1961 New York) Le Beau Chapeau. 1929. Öl auf Holz. Verso signiert und datiert: K. Seligmann / 1929. 81 × 65 cm. Provenienz: - D'Arcy Galleries, New York (verso mit Etikett). - Privatbesitz England, durch Erbschaft erhalten. Ausstellung: Paris 1932, Seligmann, Galerie Jeanne Bucher, 5.–19.2.1932, Nr. 2 (mit Abb. auf der Titelseite der Einladungskarte). Literatur: Stephan E. Hauser: Kurt Seligmann 1900–1962.
