Sight Height 16.5 in., Width 25.5 in. Framed Height 22 in., Width 30 in. French caricaturist Georges Gourse, who went by the name Sem, created imaginative portrayals of Parisians during the height of the Belle Epoque. This ink and watercolor work on paper presents two humorous vignettes on a single sheet, rendered in the fluid caricature style for which Georges Goursat, known as Sem, became celebrated during the Belle Epoque. The left scene depicts an elegantly dressed woman in animated motion wearing a black beret and yellow accented dress, accompanied by a handwritten French inscription above the figure. The right scene portrays a dramatic cafe confrontation with an agitated standing figure in dark clothing gesturing over a white-clothed table, inscribed below with a quotation attributed to La Fontaine. The sheet carries the artists signature at the lower left and is presented in a gold frame with cream mat, with a light vertical fold line at the center of the sheet consistent with age. The subject matter, draftsmanship and double-vignette format are consistent with Sems published illustrations for French periodicals of the early 20th century.

GOURSAT GEORGE SEM (1863 - 1934). LE GRAND MONDE A L'ENVERS. THIS IS ISSUE NO. 253. 23 lithographed plates on both sides, including one double and one quadruple. Sem published this album immediately after the war, but the subject matter was older. When the introduction of income tax terrified the wealthy, Sem imagined the great and good of the world reduced to menial jobs, each in their own field of expertise. In 1919, he reconnected with his milieu by publishing this joke. The printing method used by Goursat is called pochoir. It was a technique for creating prints by applying color and lines with cut-out stencils. Some pochoir prints used thirty stencils for a single image. 38 x 52 cm. 1919.
