RAFAEL SENET Y PÉREZ (Seville, 1856-1926). "View of the port of Venice. Watercolor on paper. It has slight tears on the edges. Signed in the inferior zone. Measurements: 34 x 49 cm. It is a painting framed in the tradition of Venetian vedutismo, whose history begins in the eighteenth century and was enhanced by the Grand Tour. This tradition continued during the nineteenth century and well into the twentieth century, as the city had become fashionable thanks to theorists like John Ruskin, or painters like Fortuny who through their visions of the city, projected a voluptuous and somewhat exotic image of the city, which became the perfect setting for culture. Spanish painter and watercolorist who cultivated genre, oriental and landscape themes. Senet was linked to the Sevillian group of landscape painters of Alcalá de Guadaira, led by Emilio Sánchez Perrier. He began his training in the workshop of Teodoro Aramburu at the School of Fine Arts in Seville, where he was a disciple of Joaquín Domínguez Bécquer and Eduardo Cano. He moved to Madrid in 1880, where he became acquainted with the paintings of the great masters of the Prado, and a year later he traveled to Rome to further his studies, thanks to a scholarship granted by the banker Ramón de Ibarra. He sent his works to national and foreign exhibitions, he obtained second medals in the National Fine Arts Exhibition of 1884 and in the International Exhibition of Munich. He participated in the Exhibition of the Center of Watercolorists of Barcelona and in the V International of Fine Arts of 1907. Much of his production is in English private collections, since the London gallery owner Arthur Tooth sold a large number of his paintings. He immortalized corners of picturesque villages such as the one we are dealing with here, a view from the stream that crosses a village, with its Romanesque architecture ennobled by the use of a precise brushstroke and a palette rich in tonal nuances. There are slight tears at the edges.

Rafael Senet y Pérez (Seville, 1856-ibidem, 1926), was a Spanish painter and watercolourist known for his landscapes of Venice and other costumbrista and oriental themes. He studied at the School of Fine Arts in Seville with Teodoro Aramburu, Joaquín Domínguez Bécquer and Eduardo Cano. After a brief season in Madrid, in 1880, and with the help of the banker Ramón de Ibarra, he traveled to Rome where he fell under the influence of José Villegas Cordero. In Italy he traveled painting in the south of the peninsula and in Veneto. For The Return of Fishing in Naples he was awarded a second medal at the National Fine Arts in 1884. That same year he achieved the same award at the Munich International. He was also present at the Exhibition of the Center for Watercolourists in Barcelona and at the Fifth International Exhibition of Fine Arts in 1907. Senet Pérez was linked to the group of landscape artists from Alcalá de Guadaira, led by Emilio Sánchez Perrier. A painter from Venice, many of his works are in private English collections, the vast majority of them sold by the London dealer Arthur Tooth. Unten rechts signiert, bezeichnet und datiert "Rafael Senet / Venezia [18]95". -- -- Unterrichtet wird Rafael Senet in seiner Heimatstadt Sevilla an der Real Academia de Bellas Artes de Santa Isabel de Hungría von Joaquín Domínguez Bécquer und Eduardo Cano. Ab 1875 führt er ein eigenes Atelier. 1881 übersiedelt er nach Rom und reist noch im selben Jahr nach Venedig. Die Lagunenstadt bietet ihm Motive für zahlreiche Gemälde und Aquarelle.
