signed, titled and stamped by the artist on the label affixed to the reverse framed 194.0×224.4 cm Hiroshi Senju’s “Building Series” represents a series of works that could be called the “starting point” of his career as a painter. These works were created between roughly 1984 and 1996 and were based on themes he began exploring shortly after entering Tokyo University of the Arts. The landscapes are filled with memories of the artist, who was born and raised in the metropolis of Tokyo, exploring the deserted streets of buildings alone after school during his elementary school years. Later, he described this approach as wanting to “paint what I knew.” Senju grew up in the city of Tokyo. He attended an elementary school in Azabu, near Tokyo Port (Tokyo Bay) and Tokyo Tower. On his way home, he would take the train to Shibuya or walk, passing through neighborhoods that stretched from Minato Ward to Shibuya Ward. At that time, these areas were filled with older buildings. Each building had stairways and rooftop access that could be freely explored, making them ideal for a child’s sense of adventure. Instead of climbing trees or mountains, city children secretly sneaked into abandoned buildings, climbed fire escapes, or scaled fences to reach the rooftops, delighting in their little adventures. These explorations of the spaces inside old, abandoned buildings eventually became journeys reminiscent of a labyrinth, full of fascination and allure. Corridors solidified with cement, walls and floors weathered by time and the elements, and rows of gray, old buildings stretching to the horizon—all these formed landscapes that may have seemed strangely beautiful. The half-tones of the sky just before sunset and the crimson hues dyed by the setting sun gave even the familiar everyday scenery a fresh perspective. During junior high and high school, he attended school in Hiyoshi, Yokohama, and his family moved to the suburbs. At times, due to treatments for back pain, he also spent lonely hours by himself. However, when he began attending a preparatory school in Shinjuku to prepare for the Tokyo University of the Arts entrance exams, the view of the early morning sky between the Shinjuku buildings left a psychological impression on him—a mix of sadness and refreshment, as well as a nostalgic feeling that recalled forgotten childhood memories. By the time he entered the university, the nostalgic landscapes of his youth had largely disappeared, replaced by modern glass-covered buildings. Still, whenever he found an older building amidst the new constructions, he felt a strong emotional pull, running toward it and climbing to the rooftop to take in the view. Although the scenery was completely new and different from his childhood, fragments of his early memories seemed to connect like pieces of a jigsaw puzzle. During his student years, he would wander the streets of Tokyo with a sketchbook in hand, capturing scenes with complete absorption. The works in the “Building Series” reveal the original landscapes and memories that form the foundation of Hiroshi Senju’s artistic vision.

As with the desert-themed series, works that were not produced as public art are extremely rare. Among those made available for general sale, only a handful exist. Consequently, works like this one are virtually absent from the open market, and it is likely the first time that a piece featuring an iceberg motif is being offered at a public auction. Furthermore, the period during which the artist focused on icebergs as a theme was extremely brief, resulting in fewer pieces than those inspired by deserts. Even among officially documented works, no prints featuring glaciers or icebergs appear to exist. This scarcity is precisely what maintains the exceptionally high perceived value of iceberg-themed pieces, marking this work as a true museum-quality example. The content itself is exceptional, with the overwhelming power and beauty of nature—something humankind can never truly conquer—painstakingly rendered over a long period of time. However, what I saw when I set out to depict "death" was the overwhelmingly beautiful and expansive desert landscape." The "desert" became one of the five motifs, along with "life" and "death," when I was commissioned to create folding screen paintings for one of the sub-temples of Daigoji Temple in Kyoto, known as Shukō-in, at the end of the 1990s. The Shukō-in sub-temple is located in Izu, and over a span of five years, I created a monumental series of paintings on the motifs of "Water Forest," "Desert," "Cloud Dragon," "Wave," and "Waterfall" across eight rooms, totaling 77 panels. This work is one of my representative achievements. Completed in 2002, "Desert" spans across the entire second room, measuring 182.5 x 1060.1 cm. There are few works featuring the desert motif, and this piece is particularly rare, as it closely resembles a section of the desert painted on the folding screens at Daigoji Temple's Shukō-in, and was created based on the same landscape. This painting was exhibited at the "Hiroshi Senju Exhibition" which toured from Tokyo's Mitsukoshi Main Store in Nihonbashi in 2003 to Hakata and other Mitsukoshi stores, and it was featured in the 2002 edition of the "Hiroshi Senju Art Book: Water Sounds" published by Shogakukan, and the 2003 publication "The Heart of Painting: A Complete Display of 20 Years of Painting Achievements" by Sekai Bunka-sha. Hiroshi Senju reflects on his time creating the folding screens for Daigoji Shukō-in. He recalls that in 1997, while having lunch during his new work exhibition "The Universe in the Waterfall" at the Isetan Museum in Shinjuku, Tokyo, a monk visiting the exhibition approached him with the request to paint the folding screens for Shukō-in. Despite his relaxed demeanor at the time, he reflexively accepted the offer, only to later feel regretful, blaming his overly optimistic personality. Daigoji Temple is renowned for its National Treasure folding screens painted by Kanō Eitoku and is a place where Japanese cultural refinement reaches its pinnacle, considered sacred in the world of tea as the resting place of Sen no Rikyū. Creating the large-scale, 80-meter long screens was a monumental and challenging task. "Towards the end of the 1990s, I found myself tasked with painting the folding screens for this renowned sub-temple of Daigoji, a place almost like a holy site of tea culture. The sub-temple had two tea rooms, and I decided to approach the themes of 'life' and 'death' in the paintings for each room. The image of the desert first came to mind when I thought about the landscape of "death." All living creatures on Earth cannot survive without water, and the desert, where water is scarce, is the true landscape of death. So, I traveled to Libya, said to have the most harsh desert in the world, during February, the season of sandstorms. At that time, the security situation had not yet deteriorated to the point of preventing travel. However, what I saw through my eyes, as I had set out to depict 'death,' was the overwhelmingly beautiful and expansive desert landscape. The beauty was so striking that I instinctively started running. In the midst of the utterly silent world, the only sound I could hear was my own breath, 'haah haah.' Sweat beaded in the airless space. Although I had set out to witness 'death,' what I was confronted with was the very feeling of 'being alive.'" Dimensions: 130.3×162.0 cm

As a painter he primarily uses traditional Japanese painting techniques; employing pigments derived from natural materials and applying them to a specially designed mulberry paper base. In contrast to the norm of exhibiting such works in a dimly lit room with tatami mats, Hiroshi prefers his paintings to be viewed under natural light. He was elected a member of the Japan Academy of Art in 2022. In 1995, at the 46th Venice Biennale celebrating its centennial, Senju, who represented Japan, exhibited a huge waterfall mural in the Japan Pavilion, measuring 3.4 meters high and 14 meters wide. Senju titled the work "THE FALL," which implied the fall of man, in Christian theology, God expelling Adam and Eve from the Garden. It has a dirty frame.
