The varnish is slightly darkened. There are minimal areas with scuffing due to the frame along the upper edges and corners of the canvas. Slight marks of pressure in vertical direction due to the scratchers frame are on the canvas. The painting has been skillfully repaired. A few retouched spots can be seen mainly affecting the part of the sky and a small part underneath the cock. The frame is in good condition too with traces of usage. The dimensions are 50.5 x 70.5 cm and the frame measures 71.5 x 91 cm. The small-sized piece was painted around 1860 and captivates through its fine brushwork and its tasteful presentation in the gilded wooden frame. The painting is well presented considering its age. It is signed lower center ‘F. Van Severdonck‘. Verso it is indistinctly inscribed and additionally inscribed with the name of the painter; it may read a hand-written confirmation of authenticity from the artist himself. The paint surface shows light traces of marks, where the frame has rubbed. Inspection under UV light reveals small areas of retouching, especially in the sky and at the house on the left side. The gilded wooden frame only shows small traces of age and use. The framed work measures 30.5 x 38 cm and the size of the panel is 17.8 x 25.9 cm.
