Vanishing Variations #298 signed and dated 1997 (lower right) mixed media 32” x 48” (81 cm x 122 cm) The postwar art period saw the emergence of the barung-barong as a subject, as a bid to portray the rapidly transitory nature of the Philippines. Many artists turned to the barung-barong as a symbol of societal modernization. Lino Severino, born in the same era, captured that very essence in his Vanishing Scene series, though he utilized a different subject matter in this series. Severino’s Vanishing Scene series actualizes the ephemerality of life through his realistic renditions of Bahay-na-Bato structures inspired by ancestral houses in Vigan, Iloilo, and Silay City, among others. Their photorealistic details capture a specific moment in time during a period of rapid transformation, evoking memories of home, history, and personal recollection. This 1997 Vanishing Variations #298, however, is less discernible than Severino’s usual rendition of the series. Its photorealism, while present, is reduced; in its place are overlays of various houses, with vibrant pops of yellows and blues superimposed on letter cutouts à la newspaper clippings. Washes of paint streaks resemble the relentless blur of the city lights. Here, Severino did not remain rooted to the past — instead, like the cities which he portrays in his works, the Vanishing Scene series remains in transit, ever-evolving and continuously metamorphosing. With the pieces stacked together like panels, Severino displays how light changes from light to dark—akin to watching the grand passing of time. Each panel serves as a phase that captures different shades of light, and both enact the essence of transformation. Intentionally warm and equally radiant, the paintings consist entirely of warm tones, ranging from yellow to amber and orange for the triptych, and an intense range of crimson palette for the diptych, exploding into hints of orange and gold. The uneven, layered paint gives the art pieces a sense of movement, suggesting light shifting across the canvases in different tones. Dark shades also add visual weight to the abstractions, contrasting with the warm palette that dominates the entire artwork. Lino Severino basically presents the triptych and diptych as controlled arrangements of warm color across several panels. The two works connect through atmosphere— presenting an elemental feel of watching the sky or horizon (triptych) and of heat and ash (diptych). As observed, both masterpieces reflect his further emphasis on movement, layered texture, and vivid tonal contrasts as seen in his prominent works. (Mark John Castañeda)

The windows are broken, and the cement is thinning, stripping it bare and slowly revealing the materials that constituted the walls of a once well-built establishment. Still, Severino’s exemplary brush strokes and keen color sense captured the structure’s former beauty and grandeur, including its stored memories and history, despite its deteriorating condition. COLLECTION Vanishing Scene # 214 signed and dated 1993 (lower right) oil on canvas 32" x 48" (81 cm x 122 cm) Lino Severino's 'The Vanishing Series,' a collection of works that hold significant cultural and historical value, explores the ephemerality of nature and the nostalgic quality of memory. Through his depictions of stone house fronts built during the Spanish and American occupation, this particular series is Severino's way of recording beauty before they fell altogether into despair. These works, both painted in 1993, belong in that same nostalgic series. In Vanishing Scene # 214, the shadows falling from the roof to the ground suggest a Philippine sun at its peak, the iconic iron sheet roof bouncing off the light. Devoid of human interaction, this work features the visage of a house as its centerpiece, allowing its iron bars and half-opened doors to speak for themselves. Vanishing Scene # 211, on the other hand, depicted a close-up image of a deserted, old wooden building, presumably a house, rendered in shades of washed brown. Its tattered window is widely open, as if inviting the viewers to take a look at the house's stored memories and history, before it completely fades away along with the structure's imminent collapse. Lino Severino's 'Vanishing Scenes' series is centered on the reality of memory and the ephemeral nature of life. His palette and photorealistic rendition of these structures capture the grandeur and elegance that these remarkable and admired edifices once held, effectively evoking a sense of pride and nostalgia for the days that passed. With these three sketches, all done in 1975, Severino’s innate knowledge of the human anatomy is on full display. Depicting the woman in various poses, Severino strips the nude of its eroticism; instead, he depicts the women in states of distress and despair. Like his Vanishing Scenes, which evoke constructions of memories and history, his nude portraits allude to days long past. In the middle of an expansive hacienda in Talisay City—the Hacienda Matab-ang—lies the Casa Grande, the massive stone house built by the prominent and wealthy Gen. Aniceto Lacson in 1880. It was Gen. Lacson, along with Gen. Juan Araneta, a relative by marriage, who spearheaded the revolution against the Spanish invaders in Negros, leading them to form an independent government dubbed as Republica Cantonal de Negros with Lacson serving as President. Thus, Casa Grande became, albeit for a year and unofficially, the Malacañang of Negros. What makes Casa Grande impressive as far as stone houses–the Bahay na Bato–are concerned is the balcony that runs around its entire second floor which is a rarity; moreover, a lookout tower with commanding views of the cities of Talisay, Silay, and Bacolod is located in rear portion of the property. Also, the intricate wood carving that adorn its interiors are said to have been done by Chinese artisans. In 1978, Lino Brocka shot his film “Gumising Ka Maruja” starring Susan Roces in Casa Grande. With its storied history, it is not surprising then that Lino Severino makes this mansion as the subject in piece from 1990.

COLLECTION Vanishing Scene #273 signed and dated 1996 (lower right) acrylic on canvas 32" x 48" (81 cm x 122 cm) WRITE UP: Lino Severino is best known for his Vanishing Scenes series of paintings that renders facades of the Bahay na Bato based on the ancestral houses of Vigan, Iloilo, and Silay City. Hailing from Silay, Negros himself, a city notable for its heritage zone with one of the most number of preserved ancestral houses in the country, it is perhaps no wonder that the artist has found a curious subject in the Bahay na Bato— an image that easily evokes constructions of home, history, and memory. The postwar period saw emerging images of the barongbarong in Philippine modern art, portraying the city space in a transitory period as it headed towards something more ideally ‘modern.’ Severino, born in this same era, would similarly portray transitory images of the city utilizing a different subject in his Vanishing Scene paintings in the late 20th century. In this work, the building facade is curiously much less discernible compared to Severino’s typical Vanishing Scene. The overlay of concrete-like textures in vibrant pops of yellow amongst the fading rust and rubble of paint evokes a ghost-like sense of things appearing and disappearing before the viewer’s eyes. The facade of the Bahay na Bato is seemingly lost in a blur of city lights, rendering the walls an ever-changing palimpsest constructing notions of what the city must be like. In other words, the scene vanishes because the city is always in transit. (Pie Tiausas)
