This work by Ilham Fadhli Shaimy, or better known as Kojek, was put up at the Henry Butcher Nov 9, 2014, auction but did not sell. It is now taking a second bite of the cherry. In contrast, another work, Sabotaj, sold for RM16,800 at the April 23, 2017 Henry Butcher auction. Dark and surreal, the bleak scenario captures an end industrial collapse of broken structures spewing dense smoke into the air. Connected by ramps or narrow ledges, it is sparsely dotted with people in inaction and bored animals. Yet, you find what looks like a ballerina in the midst of it all. Kojek takes after his surrealist bent from his artist father, Shaimy Hashim, the president of GAP (Gabungan Persatuan Pelukis Malaysia). Kojek graduated with a BFA from the Universiti ITM in 2003, and was artist-in-residence of Rimbun Dahan, from 2010-2011. His only solo called To Lie In Ruins was held at the Pace Gallery, Petaling Jaya, in 2010, and he also featured in a two-man show with Haslin Ismail titled Friction at Kebun Mimpi, Kuala Lumpur, in 2008. He won the Grand Prize in the Arts & Earth competition in 2006, and 3rd Prize in the Mekar Citra competition at Galeri Shah Alam in 2009. He was selected for the Jejak group exhibition at Indonesia’s National Gallery in Indonesia in 2007 and the M_kng Sp_c_: We Are Where We Aren’t exhibition at Sekeping Sin Chew Kee in Kuala Lumpur in 2015.

‘Kojek’ is another male artist dealing with the Theatre of the Absurd, like Chan Kok Hooi and Lim Keh Soon. His is set in an industrial apocalyptic scenario, often nocturnal, and with little Lillipudian characters doing things that you have to strain close to his canvas to make out. The title, Sabotaj, here is self-explanatory, so you look at what or who is being sabotaged, and maybe, why. It’s like in one of those computer games. ‘Kojek’ is, of course, the glam name of Ilham Fadhli Shaimy, whose father is also a well-known artist, Mohamad Shaimy, the president of SENIKA (Pahang) and GAP (the national umbrella body).Kojek’s inherited part of his surrealism bent from his father. He graduated with a BFA from the Universiti ITM in 2003, and was selected for the Rimbun Dahan artist’s residency in 2010-2011. He held his first solo titled, To Lie in Ruins, at Pace Gallery, Petaling Jaya, in 2010, and had a two-man show with the award-winning artist Haslin Ismail titled, Friction, in KebunMimpi, Kuala Lumpur, in 2008.

The Late Greats (Not Too Late, Not That Great) depicts a bizarre landscape - an unfertile soil jarring and uneven in its terrain though a lone tree stands strong on the right side of the composition, a rocky mountain dominating the background, smoke polluting the area and human and animal figures of disproportionate sizes scatter the ground in their own bewildering actions - finely and intricately illustrated in black ink, pencil, charcoal and red coloured pencil. Ilham Fadhli graduated with a Degree in Fine Arts from Universiti Institut Teknologi MARA, Shah Alam in 2003. Subsequently, he has frequently exhibited in galleries across Kuala Lumpur and had spent a term as the 16th Artist in Residence at Rimbun Dahan from 2010 to 2011. Ilham's work addresses contemporary issues through an absurdist or surrealist narrative. He has held a two-man show with fellow artist Haslin Ismail titled Friction in Kuala Lumpur (2008) and a solo exhibition titled To Lie in Ruins held at Pace Gallery (2010). His collages often incorporate delicate figures, dramatic colours and the use of scale to create these narratives and invite the viewer to discuss the issues raised. Ilham's works have been featured in theRimbun Dahan Artist in Residence Show (2011), Spice! at Pace Gallery, Petaling Jaya (2010) and the MATAHATI Art Triangle held at National Visual Art Gallery, Kuala Lumpur (2010). He has also participated in a group exhibition in Singapore (2011), curated by the artist and curatorial collective called Flying Karpet Company founded by contemporary artists Aswad Ameir, Saiful Razman and Shahrul Jamili.
