Alan Shields (1944-2005) III The three-dimensional lattice of interwoven paper sculpture is from the Tepee or Grid series and decorated in block printed, hand-colored, and metallic glitter elements, housed in the artist's original custom acrylic plexiglass vitrine case. The work is signed in pencil and numbered 1 of 18. Alan Shields was raised on a farm in Kansas where he learned sewing and needlework from his mother and sisters. He studied art and theater at Kansas State University from 1963 until 1966 when, on the advice of his art professor John O'Shea, he left university before graduating to pursue his career as an artist. Originally studying civil engineering, he shifted his focus to studio art. His interest in Buckminster Fuller's geodesic domes inspired him to break away from traditional flat wall paintings, leading him to create colorful, three-dimensional, and often free-hanging constructions. Alan Shields (1944-2005) was an acclaimed American visual artist who briefly attended Kansas State University from 1963 to 1966. Originally studying civil engineering, he shifted his focus to studio art. His interest in Buckminster Fuller's geodesic domes inspired him to break away from traditional flat wall paintings, leading him to create colorful, three-dimensional, and often free-hanging constructions. The Incestuous Kids, (a portfolio comprising seven of the original nine prints), 1973 color screenprints with embossing, woodcut, linoleum cut, dye-cutting, flocking and glass bead aplications. Biography from the Archives of askART: Rejecting painting with oil, he created colorful collages from various materials (cloth, thread, etc.), attached to unstretched canvas and colored with acrylic paint. While some of his work recalls the psychedelic 1960s, others reflect the colors of his country childhood, and his spirit of adventure. Shields was born in 1944 in Harrington, Kansas, and grew up on the family farm. It is here where he picked up his sewing skills, later used in his collages, from his mother and sisters. For a while, he studied engineering, and from 1963 to 1966 theater and art at Kansas State University in Manhattan, Kansas. In 1966, he left for New York City without graduating, and began working as an artist. He acted and designed stage sets during summer workshops at the University of Maine (1966-1967), and had his first show at the Paula Cooper Gallery in New York in 1969. He worked in a wide range of media, including Spin Art (1973-197), where he painted in washes of color over bands of cotton on canvas, in Finger Lickin' (1974-1976), he created patterns of beads, threads, and rope, and throughout his career he worked in various printing techniques. In "The Castle Window Set" (1981), he combined etching and aquatint with relief printing on paper handmade in India. Shields also experimented with animation, jewelry, and installations. Aquatintaradierung und Holzreliefdruck auf 2 Blatt handgeschöpftem Papier. 91,5 x 70,5 cm. Signiert und nummeriert. Deckblatt mit sieben großen Sichtfenstern, die den Blick auf das Unterblatt freigeben. - Technikbedingt vereinzelt werkimmanente Quetschfalten und kleine unmerkliche Einrisse im Papier, verso mit kleinen blassgelben Flecken, oben schwache, winzige Montierungsspuren, insgesamt sehr gut und ausgesprochen schön. Prachtvoller, experimenteller und nuancenreicher Druck in kräftigen Farben der formatfüllenden Darstellung. Etching, aquatint and relief printing on wood on two sheets of handmade paper. Signed and numbered. Face sheet with window holes revealing back sheet hinged below. - Due to technique isolated pinch pleats and small, hardly noticeable tears in paper, both immanent to work, verso with small faint-yellow stains, faint, tiny traces from previous mounting at top, all in all very good and impeccably nice. Splendid, experimental-like and nuanced impression in rich colour of the format-filling depiction. - Rare. - One fo 25 copies. - With printer's blindstamp on the right, Tyler Graphics, New York. - From the 8-parted series "The Castle Window Set". - The series was completed by Shields in 1981 at Tyler Graphics, New York, after a year of collaboration with Rodney Konopaki, Kenneth Tyler and Steve Reeves. The "windows" of each face sheet were created exclusively by the artist at the Gandhi Ashram papermill, India while the back sheets were produced by Tyler Graphics Ltd.
